I'm not sure how you can come to this conclusion, are you a rogue NASA scientist who has used this forum to leak vital information on the black hole of NASA's budget.

the only hope is the privet sector

Do they look at hedges, sorry I agree if only for space shuttles dressed as a coke can.

I do not know how a private sector would get funding, how would it make a profite?

Ok here is how much funding the military gets, 16 %. Now if you took 1% of that 16% you could eliminate 75% of the poverty in Africa. So, there is no question of if we have the funds, because we do, we could get them from the military, but that is not like the gov. We invested in space in the 60s because we had to beat the Russians, space was considered the future and if we lost to the Russians it would be a major blow. So we won't invest because there is not profit to be made and no political advantage. I bet if we choose we could pass our achivments from the 60 in 10 years, but once again not like the gov.

You see my friend, if there is a private sector then that means theres capitalists probably....and if that is true, then they will be the first to go to space and be "saved" from the hell they created, not us.

If you want safe, reliable technology garuanteed to beat the Ruskies at their own game, you would want government involvement. When the Ruskie's soviet empire implodes, forget about space and cut NASA's funding.

If you want cheap, money making technology garuanteed to make a profit, you would forget about space and see if you can dupe some worthless drones into buying another useless trinket.

No, the only way to ensure any meaningful accomplishment is to let the scientists have the resources they need and to give them plenty of time to fine-tune their technology.

You can buy land on mars and the moon, some Japanese company is already planning a amusement park on the moon.
I'm waiting to buy an entire star system though!
