I just saw this two days ago in the theater and I must say that it was the best movie of the year. It follows Che's book very closely and portrays extremely well the evolution of Che Guevara from a middle-class student to a dedicated revolutionary. The movie was done in subtitles which I thought was extremely necessary to retain the authenticity of the movie. Two hours long, it was a beatiful film with amazing scenery and amazing people.

wrong, best movie of the years is either "lost in translation" or "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind"

You're fucking insane if you think Lost in Translation was the best movie of the year. Eternal Sunshine was good, but Being John Malkovich I think was a million times better. Charlie Kaufman just owns.
But neither of those as good as The Motorcycle Diaries. That movie was incredible! I completely agree with you, KR. Aside from being amazingly profound and meaningful and beautiful, the cinematography was also spectacular. It's just every scene more beautiful than the last.

I love the part where he first encounters indigenous people, I love their culture and they're just beatiful people.

hate to burst your bubble but Lost In Translation was released 2003. In my opinion the best movies of 2004 were in no particular order
The Aviator - brilliantly shot movie by cinematography genius Robert Richardson, excellent performances from both Leonardo Dicaprio and Cate Blanchett, and it was directed by my favorite director Martin Scorsese
Ray- Great music and great performance by Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles
Enternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind- Surprise performance by Jim Carey, best indie film of 2004.
Hero- though technically a 2002 picture it finally saw its american release
Kill Bill Vol 2- a spaghetti western, kun fu mixed conclusion to Quentin Tarantino's 4th film.
and I havent seen it yet but I am eagerly waiting for Million Dollar Baby to play near me, i have heard that both Eastwood and Swank and excellent.
and its not a movie but Arrested Development is the best show on television currently with great great writing.

TMD isn't even in your top 5?! WTF?
And Eternal Sunshine was by no means an indie movie.
Has anyone seen Garden State. That movie was increadible. Deffinitely somehwere among the best of '04.
Are you sure about the Aviator? It seems pretty bad from what I would assume.
And Hero was mad over rated. As was Kill Bill, but that was actually not bad.

Enternal Sunshine was indeed an independent film. And I never saw Motorcycle Diaries, I am not very insterested in Che movies, plus the only theaters playing it were in Chicago. And the Aviator is great I dont know why you thought it wouldnt be, is it because of who is in it or who its about?

I thought The Motorcycle Diaries was an excellent movie, and not just because on my leftist view, I enjoyed it because it was a well made film.

 Hi All
I was a member a while ago, but due to things beyond my control ,i'm back and glad to be back with fellow comrades who know and respect the meaning of Che and what he stood for.
I saw the Motorcycle Dairies and by far was the best movie i had ever seen in the longest time.I agree that it was done very well. Robert Redford fronted the money
and from what i understand he is putting monies that he makes towards projects that benefit the left and "Redford is putting his money where his mouth is".
Redford is humm, blacklisted in Hollywood because of what HE is standing up for and as far as i know he is paying the price for that and the money that he earns from his movies are supporting leftist projects.
Any one who is apart of this site and does not support film's that finally make Che a positive icon to all, should get there head examined. So many film's about Che and his fellow comrades, that are tainted by Americian Propaganda.

I am not being narrow mined, i noted when i saw the movie Motorcycle Dairies there were some pompas ass right wingers coming to see the movie and asking people who Che was what a digrace to the memory of Che and comrades. I hate these types that try to pretend they know and support Che and his comrades. I was mearly stating that people are apart of this form to support Che etc and the left and to exchange ideals, and encourage debate.
Red Zepplin ,May be u are being a little to hasty in rebuttle. read and understand what i stated.I have been and always will keep the memory of Che and Comrades alive through debate, forms etc.
Well anyways it was nice to hear another point of view and hope all can move forth to bring the leftist ideals to more people, to make the Right wingers think twice before puting down any of our comrades

truthaddict, LiT got a 2004 release in the UK and it is a brilliant film about human relationships. Eternal Sunshine was better though, there is absolutly nothing wrong with that film, best film of the year. full stop.

just the same way some people dont like Westerns or War movies, they just dont appeal to them. Just as seeing a movie about Che is not appealing to me, I dont think I need my "head examined" for having different tastes in film. Motorcycle Diaries may be a good film, I however, probally will never watch it.

Have you seen anything else by Walter Salles?
If you haven't, you really really ought to.
Behind the Sun and Central Station are both incredible
City of God could have been a Walter Salles movie, but it wasn't. It was, however, produced by him, and is definitely worth watching as well.
And The Motocycle Diaries doesn't really conform to any genre like that...
It's drama, comedy, romance, action, biographical, it's anything.

Centeral Station and City of God are fantastic movies, It's just that Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine were such brilliant movies it just doesn't compare to MD.

You must admit it is odd to be on a Che website and not be interested in Che-themed movies. Westerns don't appeal to me so I damn sure wouldn't post on a John Wayne site. But whatever.
Motorcycle Diaries is a very close 2nd to Eternal Sunshine for movie of the year though. They're very different movies so it's hard to choose. It should still get a couple of Oscar nominations for cinematography or art direction or one of those categories.

Eternal Sunshine was good.
But you guys are over rating it.
For that genre, both Being John Malkovich and Donnie Darko are inffinitely better films.
And Garden State was really good! Great soundtrack too.

BJM was a bit weirder but slightly less coherent and I just didn't like the ending. I bout DD on dvd at the weekend and I will probs watch it soon so I'll let you know what I think of it then.
But I dunno why I just really connected and felt something about Eternal Sunshine, it is one of my favourite films ever.
