Okay, I'm 13 so I have yet to see the Battle Royale movie but my pa got me the novel (NOT graphic novel) for christmas which I've been reading obsessively.

I've noticed its far more political than most people reffer to it as being. It shows a lot about the insanity and disgusting ideas in a fascist/totalitarean society, has anyone else noticed this? I'm particularly on about the conversations between Shogo and Shuya.

Also, to anyone who hasn't read this I seriously recommend it...It reminds me a lot of Nineteen Eighty Four (but EXTREMELY violent). So yea, what are your thoughts on it?

The film barely refers to the fascist society they live in. Any good effect the film has is outwieghed by its design to appeal to people for the violence and the sick contest.

LOL. Then you missed the whole point. With or without the politics it is about being young in general, like an exagerated biography of teenage life. Its a lot about growing up and such. You clearly didn't really "get" the movie.

The tag line for the film was 'could you kill your best friend', something that doesn't appear to me to be about being young in general.

The film does depict a reality of teenage life, however it is also a very violent film. The film operates on a number of different levels to appeal to the viewer. Unfortunately, horrific violence and an insensitivity to violence is one way in which the film is made exciting.

Edit: You also mentioned that you have not seen the movie. Is this still the case?

No I have not seen the movie but I know loads about it...read stuff. Anyways, the extreme violence represents stuff...Not sure what though...Would have to dig up an old SFX issue...

Anyways, there is a reason for the violence which also appears in the book...I mean, the violence in the book is serious stuff...Probably not as bad as the movie but still. Anyways, yea...Apparently it all has a reason...

great movie .... it isn’t really a political message but more of a reflection of Japanese’s society today.....the second one was terrible no redeeming qualities
