Freedom of the City of Glasgow, 4 August. The scroll was accepted on behalf of Mandela by the Vice-President of Nigeria.
For years every weekend or so I stood outside the South African consulate along with many other communists and anti-fascists.
Eventually, while Apartheid still existed the City council changed the name of the street it was on it was from Georges St to Nelson Mandela Place.
He came to Glasgow to accept 9 freedoms of the city.
There was 9,000 people there in the rain.
But my favourite memory is one of the women at my college being arrested for trying to burn the place down.(the SA consulate)
