Capitalism through and through.

What so none of you care that programmers are going oget sued (or be forced to pay royalties) for using standard techniques of code, because the likes of Bill Gates have patented them?

You do realise what this will mean for open source?

For those who still don't get it, it means stuff like Linux, Mozzila, etc are under threat, and may be stopped.

It won't be stopped, it will just go underground and become illegal software. They can't stop it.

You can't stop anything on the internet...I mean, that's what it's there for, isn't it?

But thats not the point, why should you be sued for just writing a program? Why should we have to pay royalties for writing a piece of code using a patiented concept.

It stinks.

Aye it does, but think of the people out there now. Who are already finding ways around it, it's like when XP came out, two days after it's release people had already made illegal copies. And they've never been caught :)

Enigma, this should be in a better forum in my opinion, and isn't surprising. (Science and environment? or politics?)

Capitalism must restrict the development of technology at this point in order to perpetuate itself. The gift economies that are being developed on the internet are a direct threat to Capitalist modes of production and distribution and cannot be deployed properly so long as Capitalism continues to exist. Until then, the upper class has a natural tendency to fight this down to the last man.

This might be good for the Free Software movement, who hold the false belief that a project such as GNU/Linux can ever properly exist within Capitalism. They believe partnerships between business and GNU/Linux can co-exist, but that's just not reflected in reality.

The contradictions are far too fundamental to be reconciled. And these kinds of shots will help to shape the development of the Free Software movement and the ideas held by the community over the next few years.

Yet another front in the war, I wonder how long before labour movements and GNU/Linux technology begin linking up?

With bittorrent technology, its made a company's worst nightmare come true,

with bittorrent, filesharing is "technically" not illegal.

Its a P2P system so when you download, from other users, you upload to others as well, so it is a network of users sharing bandwith mutually downloading and uploading off and to each other.
Bitorrent servers are not "technically" illegal as well, since they don't store or transfer a single peice of bootlegged programming through the server, only contain the information WHERE to obtain the illegal information (Which has been decided not to be illegal in some countries like Sweden), in the form of the .torrent file that links you to the P2P network.

Is that awesome or what? :)

It may be one of the reasons it is around now but definitely not why it came about.
That is one of the reasons I use it though ;)

I do and i am heavily concerned about something like this. This would appear
that the Open Source Movement is about to get a big wake-up call about the
realities of Capitalism and the State. Because if programmers are going to be
hurt over this - it will eventually become appearent that GNU/Linux just can not
co-exist along capitalist mode and means of technological distribution and
production. It will just be a matter of time before the entire Open Source
movement will smell the boiling tea.
