The battle of cable cable street was proably the greatest victory against fascism in this country.

It was the first time the immigrant jewish community had really asserted itself politically. It is estimated that on that day 250,000 people- 400,000 people, went onto the streets to make sure that Mosely would not pass.

At the time the british jewish community who had recently emigrated from russia were very poor furthermore, there establishment, the boad of deputies, had, like many immigrant communities, always told "You have to be greatful to britain" etc. and not to cause trouble. Forutunately, jews did not take any notice.

Cable street, was, more than aanything a wonderful show of unity. between the communists and the socialists, the irish dockers and the jews. Many Irish dockers came out to oppose fasscism support the jews .

On the day, 4000 police battled for two hours to try to force a way through for the fascist demonstration, but they simply could not do it At one point they were impeded by a communist tram driver who simply stopped his tram and got out.

Great story, and I really ernjoyed going to that page and laughing :-)
