G.I. Admits to Killing Hurt Iraqi Teenager

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier pleaded guilty Friday to killing a severely wounded Iraqi teenager in what investigators say may have been a mercy killing, the latest of several similar incidents that have undercut efforts by the United States to win support among Iraqis and defeat a rampant insurgency.

This is to be expected. Any society that allows intolerance and hatred to breed will allow such actions to take place. I was talking with my cab driver, an immigrant from Egypt, two weeks ago and he told me how not long after 9/11 he could see, hear, and experience the overwhelming anti-Arab sentiment.

The problem is that this appears to be rooted deep in America's foundation as a society. While Europe was experiencing the Great Enlightenment, the US was going through the Great Awakening. Thus the product is a US that craves an enemy, be it the American Indians, the German, the African-American, the communist, and now the Arab. Our society depends on a black and white atmosphere because this notion has been perpetuated throughout our history. We must come to terms with our history and try to reshape our society, because otherwise it will not be able to withstand the test of time.
