Please explain this to me

Abolition [Aufhebung] of the family! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Communists.

On what foundation is the present family, the bourgeois family, based? On capital, on private gain. In its completely developed form, this family exists only among the bourgeoisie. But this state of things finds its complement in the practical absence of the family among the proletarians, and in public prostitution.

The bourgeois family will vanish as a matter of course when its complement vanishes, and both will vanish with the vanishing of capital.

It is very much exactly as it sounds. The bourgeoisie have a priveledge as having no economic forces between their family ties (except that which they wish to set upon them, for example... you're not getting any of my money when you die unless you do this). On the other hand the proletariat family has been reduced to a number of economic ties, the child becomes a burden on the parents, in some instances children get jobs to "help the family out" thus relieving some of that burden, and in that sense children have often been seen as a way to GAIN money. Of course this is extremely dependent on the society and how easily the child can be placed into labor. I guarantee, however, that labor in most circumstances can be forced upon extremely young children.

As such the family as we know it will be abolished. If indeed we destroy the economic links between the modern proletariat family there becomes little need for these people to organize as a family. We all still have obviously biological ties, whether or not these need to fullfill any purpose is debatable. Materially speaking, they don't.
