1) Scottish Workers Republic
An Geamradh/ Winter 2004 edition out now

Britain out of Iraq!
Scotland out of Britain!

The time is long passed to simply state ‘No War’. 100,000 dead Iraqis will
testify to that. Who knows how many hundreds of thousands more have been
maimed? The closed schools and hospitals; the lost jobs; flattened homes;
rocketing prices – all serve to fuel the Resistance to the US and Brit
neo-colonial agenda.

The multi-billion dollar contracts already handed out to Western
multinationals to ‘rebuild’ Iraq will pail into insignificance when
compared to the privatisation of the Iraqi state-owned industries,
including oil and water, as the Western imperialists plunder the resources
of Iraq.

Talk of ‘war or peace’ in this situation is futile. The US and British are
imposing their global economic domination by whatever means necessary. The
‘War on Terror’ is simply an excuse for the Imperialists to increase
oppression at home and abroad. For the Iraqi working-class there is no
choice of war or peace. This is a war of national liberation. They are now
in the front-line of the global struggle against Imperialism. Their
struggle is our struggle.

Shamefully Scottish youths are once more dying to expand England’s markets.
Iraq is a place they have no right to be. They are enforcing an illegal war
and imposing a colonial solution on the Iraqi people by force of arms. They
are fighting the wrong enemy. Their enemy is at home.

Fight British Imperialism not British Victims!

2) "The Two Falkirks" Book Launch and Review

Launch of the eminent Scottish labour historian Dr James D Young's new
book, "The Two Falkirks".

Review by Donald Anderson

‘The Two Falkirks – A History’

by Dr James D Young

Printed by Clydeside Press, £10.50.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Well worth a read and to keep for invaluable reference purposes. Dr Jas D
Young adds this worthy to his many other books and articles on Scottish
Labour history, which, as usual, pulls no punches. Correctly using, the
much abused, symbiotic method of dialectical opposites to reach a
conclusion, dating back to the ancient Greek philosophers now adopted by
latter day Marxists, James does indeed describe the twa opposing Falkirks
from an unashamedly class angle. Was it Aristotle, or Plato that used to
walk about arguing with himself, before concluding his points? Jimmy would
not be out of place in such distinguished company with his tartan toga.

Starting, appropriately, with the two Battles of Falkirk, 1298 in the
Scottish Wars of Independence, to the Jacobite victory of 1746, he covers
the Reformation to the moulding of the community viz the Carron Iron works;
The origins of Modern Falkirk, Cultural Tourism, the Falkirk fitba team,
the Labour movement, 1789- 1947, from the United, Scotsmen, the Radical
Rising of 1820, right up 1947 and beyond to a historian’s account of
Falkirk up to the present day, Jimmy takes no prisoners.

It was particularly pleasing to read the author lay into the cancer of
sectarianism in a large section of the Scottish working. In the days when
bus loads of Old Firm supporters from other parts of Scotland leave their
own locale to cheer on one half of the Old Firm against their local team it
is still heartening to know that the Falkirk Bairns managed to resist this
lumpen culture. Though speaking at Grangemouth library book launch, he was
saddened to note the commercial opening of Celtic and Rangers shops in the
old town. Showing sympathy for the radical side of Presbyterianism, from
whence he sprang, he also generously shows a greater sympathy for Irish
Catholic migrant workers who helped make up the character of present day
Falkirk along with migrants from the Heilans and elsewhere.

At no time does he descend into maudlin sentimentality or local chauvinism.
Always his international humanitarianism shines through, providing an
example of the two sides of globalism and localism, as it should be, with
no contradictions whatsoever. His liberal quotations and massive listed
sources could be useful to those who wish to delve further into why our
past matters so much to shape our present identity in a soulless world.

You can hear Dr Young at his own book launch run by Clydeside Press on
Thursday, December, 8 in Shuna Island, Ruchill, Glasgow. All welcome.

3) Galloway Comes Clean - Where Now for SWP in Scotland?

The SSP has issued the following press release regarding the announcement
from George Galloway that Respect are to stand in Scotland against the SSP.
Galloway's interview in the right-wing Mail on Sunday also contained a
number of attacks on the SSP as well as a pathetic attempt to split the
party on the disruption surrounding Tommy Sheridans recent decision to
stand down as SSP Convenor. What is unclear at this time is what role the
SWP have played and where do the SWP go from here? One thing's for certain
the SSP cannot now continue as it is without a humiliating public
climb-down from Galloway. Given his over-inflated sense of his own worth
this is highly unlikely. Republican Socialists need to be very alert in the
SSP at this time.

SSP attacks Galloway for attempting to split left in Scotland
SSP Press Release

The Scottish Socialist Party today angrily condemned George Galloway
for coming to the aid of New Labour with a threat to split the left
vote in Scotland.

In an article in The Mail on Sunday George Galloway raises the
prospect of Tommy Sheridan standing as a Respect Unity Coalition
candidate at the next Scottish Parliament elections.

Today Tommy Sheridan categorically ruled out any such move.
Tommy said;

"I don't know why George is raising this idea.

"I am absolutely committed to the Scottish Socialist Party and expect
to be a leading candidate for the party in the 2007 Holyrood election.

"Respect is doing a good job in England of campaigning against the
Iraq war and raising basic socialist policies but there is already a
socialist party in Scotland, it is called the SSP.

"I have no plans to be anything other than a representative of the
Scottish Socialist Party and if George wants to stand for the same
list as me he will have to join the SSP before the next Scottish
Parliament elections."

An SSP spokesperson condemned George Galloway's comments outright and
accused him of coming to the aid of New Labour by threatening to
split the left vote in Scotland.

The spokesperson said;
"We are disappointed that George Galloway has launched this
astonishing attack on the SSP, based on ignorance and misinformation.
We are angry that George Galloway has launched this attack in a right
wing newspaper with a tawdry track record of promoting racism and
virulent anti-trade unionism.

"George Galloway has made no attempt to contact any member of the SSP
executive to clarify the facts behind Tommy Sheridan's resignation.

"The Scottish Socialist Party has assisted and supported the
development of the Respect Coalition in England. Unfortunately, it
appears that George is prepared to cynically exploit the short term
difficulties faced by the SSP to further his own parliamentary
ambitions.

"The SSP has united the left in Scotland and was campaigning for
peace and socialism years before George Galloway finally broke with
New Labour.

"The only people who could benefit from a divided left in Scotland
would be the British establishment and New Labour on both sides of
the border.

"The Scottish Socialist Party will be writing to the Respect Unity
Coalition in England to call upon the party to dissociate from George
Galloway's divisive outburst."

Strengthening networks of resistance to war: an anti-war forum
11th & 12th December, Kinning Park Complex, Glasgow

Two days of workshops and discussion aimed at strengthening networks of
resistance to war in Scotland.

Background:
The re-election of Bush makes it almost inevitable that the US will launch
more attacks on other countries some time in the next four years. With the
recent resurgence of protests over the attack on Falluja, now is an
appropriate time to look at how we can strengthen grassroots action, not
only in support of the campaign to bring the troops home from Iraq but also
in preparation for resistance to future US war-plans.

One stark lesson learnt from recent campaigns is that the British
government won't listen to a campaign of only marching from A to B and
set-piece rallies. More creative forms of protest, direct action and civil
disobedience have to become prominent features of campaigns if we are to
succeed in stopping future wars.

This two day event is to help develop the networks of resistance to war in
Scotland by sharing information and ideas and to come up with joint ideas
for future actions.

How can we increase grass-roots action against war? How can we improve
communication and solidarity between the different strands of the anti-war
movement? What can we learn from each other's experiences?

Over this weekend, we hope this anti-war forum will help to start to answer
these questions and more.
