View Full Version : A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN

So as the title suggests, this movie is about a day without a Mexican.

This movie is a comedy slash social satire that attempts to be a sort of eye opener, but the director's attempt to make this somewhat serious, ends up making it seem more of a joke.

This film documents a day in California where all the LATINOS (because on the west coast all hispanics are presumed to be Mexican) mysteriously disappear, leaving nobody to pick fruits and veggies, wash cars, mow loawns, raise rich white peoples' kids, and leaves the Border Patrol with absolutley nothing to do. Not only do all Latinos vanish, but California is left surrounded by a sort of inpenetrable purple haze that makes it impossible for any type of outside contact with the rest of the world (seemingly, this would be more of a concern for us, but is not). Total chaos ensues without us and people begin to realize how much of an asset all latinos are to the fifth largest economy of the world. Even the racists missed their loyal workers!

There is this Armenian woman who throughout the whole film, everybody, including herself, thought she was Mexican (except for me, I knew all along, hehehe). They try to use her as a key to get the "Mexicans" back but it doesn't work. I think they added this in to give the bland move some sort of followable plot, but it's just dumb.

*BEST PART*
So anyways this movie has the fairytale ending we all love to see! "La Migra" detected some activity along the border, goes to see what's up, and sure enough, it's some illegals trying to get across *gasps*. They ask them if they were Mexican, they say "si" (yes) and start cheering like they just won the lottery, (which, in a sense they did). My favorite part was when one of the Mexicans says to the other "The gringos are fuckin' cool!". Fairytale ending indeed.

Has anybody seen this yet? What do you all think?

Even though this movie is like a "one star" (for effort) kind of films, it's still funny, and I recommend you guys check it out. At least you'll be able to laugh your ass off at the numerous stereotypes presented, if anything.

Sounds like a really a fun movie and i think also real at that. A capitalist society would be paralysed without the working class. But if there were no Latinos left, there would still be blacks and asians (no pun intended, I am Asian). I know that is how most cappies see minorities as factory or sweat shop workers. I wish it gets released here in my country which I very much have doubts about :(

75% of California's population was not born in California...

We're a hodge podge mix when it comes to latinos: I've met lots of Mexicans, A hnadful of Cubans, one or two Peruvians, 4 Argetinans, and a Panamanian.

The 5th largest economy in the world, when ranked among nations, does require laborers... so, though I doubt most will see the social points it raises, it's nice someone is trying to raise them.
I'm definitely going to see it, it should be fun.

You might want to try the Spanish language section (if they have one). It's in English though, don't worry.

Is El Che a documentary? I saw one about him and I think that's what it was called. It was bad ass.

I really enjoyed this movie, but what was the significance of the drops of water? that fell on people's hands at the end just before the disappeared people reappeared?

Special affects maybe? I'm not sure. There was a few things they did in this movie that I don't really understand.

Oooh I know, maybe they were symbolism for tears?! Like a California crying and with pain and suffering if Latinos are barred from immigrating to here.

Yeah tears of some sort was the best explanation I could come up with but why did they only show it happening to the people who were already sympathetic to the latinos?

Yeah, my best-friend wants me to see it, but I just have no desire to. I love movies and I am a Film & Video Major, but any movies with Latino stereotypes is not for me.

It's not just a movie about latino stereotypes. This movie goes deeper than that. The stereotypes add a little humor to the whole situation but aren't meant to distract the viewer from the actual message. Please don't let that turn you off from seeing it. It's the first movie that I know of that makes an attempt to show the value of Hispanics in America.

Yeah but it's not that bad, at least they made fun of the current system.

Whatever you do don't watch or rent that "Spanglish" sack of shit though. The miserable-wetback-with-a-heart-of-gold-is-saved-by-rich-white-man crap is getting old and pathetic.
