Being able to throw down some good rhymes is rather meaningless when all your rhymes are about killing gays and beating women. By the way, I could name a million different rappers who have more skill than Eminem, but I'm gonna make sure I plug Boots Riley from The Coup. He's got skill, and his lyrics actually have some substance.
*On a side note, I think its rather humorous when you bring up rap music to someone who incidently happens to be white and they say "I don't like rap... except for Eminem"
BOZG
8th December 2004, 23:31
Yes but whether you agree with his lyrics or not, his ability does not change. Whether his lyrics are downright insulting, he's still very clever and that doesn't change.
I find it annoying though when some people bring up the points of Eminem's lyrics being mysoginistic and homophobic (correct points) but do not acknowledge, at least not publically when someone like Immortal Technique is concerned. His lyrics contain many such references but because his lyrics have more revolutionary content, people tend to ignore it.

People need to be able to judge a person on their talents, not whether or not you agree with what they are saying.
I disagree with a majority of what Eminem says. That doesn't mean I think he's a "talentless hack". Anyway who thinks Eminem is talentless has no grasp of hip hop whatsoever. Yeah, he's a homophobe, he's violent, he's still an amazing rapper.
Listen to some of the guy's freestyle on the old Wake Up Show with Sway and Tech. The man can invent the most intricate scenarios off the top of his head, it's amazing.

Name one rapper alive with more talent.
Canibus, Ras Kass, Nas, Supastition.
And I'd agree with what BOZG said, there seems to be a prevailing attitude among those in hip hop that in order to keep the street credibility, if you want to call it that, you have to be this macho attitude and that means making sure everyone knows how many women you fuck and how not feminine you are. It occurs in the mainstream and in the underground which is pretty sad.
However I do think that Eminem should stop his musical escapades at writing lyrics and never produce again.

Most talented lyracist alive?? Out of any type of musical style? If you believe that then you are the fool. And no I won't even go into making a list of better lyricists because I don't have the time to write that list up and doing so would mean that I think your statement is worth refuting. I've heard MOSH, Im sure most of us here weren't all born Cappy, but we had an evolution which helped us see the wrongs of the capitalist ways. Well for alot of white people out there eminem is a big I con in thier life. Hip-hop for a while was a black-only, no trespassing area. If you were white and like rap you were a wigga. (I hate that term). You couldn't just be a white guy who liked rap. So when eminem started throw down his rhymes, which he is amazing at, it opened up alot of peoples eyes. WHITE PEOPLE CAN LIKE HIP-HOP AND NOT BE WACK?! And thats why people say that.
As for this poll, its kinda ridiculous. He's made it clear through different ways that hes democratic. There is alot of ground between communist & republican. But even if he was a spoken rebublican, there are alot of red staters out there that hate GWB. You don't need to be left to see that.

Now were not going to fall out over something as trivial as this are we?
But you were so predictable, I knew that you were going to come out with 'closer', because everyone who attacks NIN's lyrical value do, as if you can judge an entire band by one song.
A song more over where you don't uderstand what its about. Hell I don't even get it. I've been told its a slam on organised religion, personal inadiquacy, and several differen't things, I don't pretend to know what its about.
Oooh, deep. And a very intricate use of the English language. How did he pen these lyrics ! It must have took him years !

I disagree, maybe we should all go out and say how wonderful Count Grishnackh's shit was, you know in the spirit of tolerance of trash. Like Count Grishnackh 's, Eminems reactionary, bullshit, lyrics (which are totally unsubtal) remove any credibility of his as a respectable artist, in my view.
Some masterpiece lyrics:-
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear my crown of s**t
On my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

For starters, while Reznor's songs have individual meanings, you cannot take one song as an example because the songs fit in the context of the entire album. And stemming from that there are many interpretations of the album.
One of the most interesting explanations I find and one which I largely agree with is the album's relation to 'god'. The song 'Closer' comes about midway in the album and following on the 'god' interpretation, the song is meant to be an explanation of some of the acts involved in becoming a godlike figure rather than a spiritual closeness to god, which is NEVER the case. In this interpretation the album represents a rejection of a god, an attempt to become god and the final realisation of the nature of god and then the self-destructiveness.
Even if you take 'Closer' as an individual song, it represents a wish to become someone else, to reject everything else and to consciously change your sexual personality to be something of no value other than a sexual act.

I find alot of NIN songs aren't very well written. Though I enjoy much of the music and some lyrics I do think are very good. Anyways, I think Eminem has very good lyrics in certain songs as well. If you want to proove someone was a better writer than the other, why don't you quit with the politically motivated character assassination of why the guy you don't like sucks and put something by the guy you like up instead to show his supremacy of prose. Seems more productive and people may even gain interest into something they may haven't had interest in before.

Well thank you for making my reading the posts about NIN not completely useless. How were they ? Probably great in Ireland.
Enigma, calm down, I don't care that much. I'm not much of an Eminem fan, but I do think he's a brilliant lyricist. As for Reznor, I used that song because it's the first one that popped into my head. I could have quoted his stupid shit about pigs or whatever as well, but I didn't because I don't care.
No "falling out", I think NIN sucks and you don't. I'm not overly concerned with it. You have yourself a great day sir, I hope it's filled with Candy Cane wishes and Sunshine dreams.
Urban, you seem to always cling on to this notion that when people say "this artist sucks" or "this artist is the best", that we actually believe these are objective facts.

Wow, Eminem made a song called, 'Mosh'. Have you actually listened to the lyrics?
"Stomp, push, shove, mush,
Fuck Bush,
Until they bring our troops home,"
Eminem's just hopping on the anti-government bandwagon. This doesn't even establish a communist tendency - it reiterates the fact that Bush should bring home the troops.
By bringing home the troops, it doesn't mean he's a communist. Lol! If he were a communist, he wouldnt be making millions of dollars consistently.

I must say since Eminem has released Mosh he raised about 1000% in my respect scala! :) I'm not that into Hip Hop at all, but I consider this a good song, both musically and from the lyrics, which are without question leftist. And the music video is damn well done, and just pretty cool. He's even implying that Kerrry is NOT an alternative, which isn't even Moore is doing.
And even IF he is just doing this to make money, which I doubt but which is of course possible, it is totally irrelevent IMO. There can not be a better method of propagating leftist minds to the general public than through pop culture, it's highly effetive, and does probaply make more people question their beliefs than most communist parties are doing.

Mosh Lyrics:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the Republic for which it stands
One nation under God
Indivisible...
It feels so good to be back..
I scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel and re-energize and rewind
I give sight to the blind, my insight through the mind
I exercise my right to express when I feel it's time
It's just all in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say to fight, you take it as I'mma whip someone's ass
If you don't understand, don't even bother to ask
A father who has grown up with a fatherless past
Who has blown up now to rap phenomenon that has
Or at least shows no difficulty multi-task
And in juggling both perhaps mastered his craft
Slash entrepreneur who has helped launch a few more rap acts
Who's had a few obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his career typical manure moving past that
Mr. kisses ass crack, he's a class act
Rubber band man, yea he just snaps back
[Chorus:]
Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength
Come with me and I won't steer you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
To the light at the end of the tunnel
We gonna fight, we gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march
Through the swamp, we gonna mosh through the marsh
Take us right through the doors (c'mon)
All the people up top on the side and the middle
Come together lets all bomb and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people some white and some black
Don't matter what color, all that matters we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause don't matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us they can't, we stronger now more than ever
They tell us no we say yea, they tell us stop we say go
Rebel with a rebel yell, raise hell we gonna let em know
Stomp, push, shove, mush, Fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home (c'mon)
[Chorus]
Imagine it pouring, it's raining down on us
Mosh pits outside the oval office
Someone's tryina tell us something,
Maybe this is god just sayin' we're responsible
For this monster, this coward,
That we have empowered
This is Bin Laden, look at his head noddin'
How could we allow something like this without pumping our fists
Now this is our final hour
Let me be the voice in your strength and your choice
Let me simplify the rhyme just to amplify the noise
Try to amplify the times it, and multiply by six...
Teen million people, Are equal at this high pitch
Maybe we can reach alqueda through my speech
Let the president answer a higher anarchy
Strap him with an Ak-47, let him go, fight his own war
Let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil
No more psychological warfare, to trick us to thinking that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country, we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes its all lies
The stars and stripes, they've been swiped, washed out and wiped
And replaced with his own face, Mosh now or die
If I get sniped tonight you know why,
Cause I told you to fight.
[Chorus]
And as we proceed,
To Mosh through this desert storm,
In these closing statements, if they should argue
Let us beg to differ
As we set aside our differences
And assemble our own army
To disarm this Weapon of Mass Destruction
That we call our President, for the present
And Mosh for the future of our next generation
To speak and be heard
Mr. President, Mr. Senator
Do you guy's hear us...hear us...[laughing] (Hailie)

"If I Had..."
Life.. by Marshall Mathers
What is life?
Life is like a big obstacle
put in front of your optical to slow you down
And everytime you think you gotten past it
it's gonna come back around and tackle you to the damn ground
What are friends?
Friends are people that you think are your friends
But they really your enemies, with secret indentities
and disguises, to hide they true colors
So just when you think you close enough to be brothers
they wanna come back and cut your throat when you ain't lookin
What is money?
Money is what makes a man act funny
Money is the root of all evil
Money'll make them same friends come back around
swearing that they was always down
What is life?
I'm tired of life
I'm tired of backstabbing ass snakes with friendly grins
I'm tired of committing so many sins
Tired of always giving in when this bottle of Henny wins
Tired of never having any ends
Tired of having skinny friends hooked on crack and mini-thins
I'm tired of this DJ playing YOUR shit when he spins
Tired of not having a deal
Tired of having to deal with the bullshit without grabbing the steel
Tired of drowning in my sorrow
Tired of having to borrow a dollar for gas to start my Monte Carlo
I'm tired of motherfuckers spraying shit and dartin off
I'm tired of jobs startin off at five fifty an hour
then this boss wanders why I'm smartin off
I'm tired of being fired everytime I fart and cough
Tired of having to work as a gas station clerk
for this jerk breathing down my neck driving me bezerk
I'm tired of using plastic silverware
Tired of working in Building Square
Tired of not being a millionaire
But if I had a million dollars
I'd buy a damn brewery, and turn the planet into alcoholics
If I had a magic wand, I'd make the world suck my dick
without a condom on, while I'm on the john
If I had a million bucks
it wouldn't be enough, because I'd still be out
robbing armored trucks
If I had one wish
I would ask for a big enough ass for the whole world to kiss
I'm tired of being white trash, broke and always poor
Tired of taking pop bottles back to the party store
I'm tired of not having a phone
Tired of not having a home to have one in if I did have it on
Tired of not driving a BM
Tired of not working at GM, tired of wanting to be him
Tired of not sleeping without a Tylenol PM
Tired of not performing in a packed coliseum
Tired of not being on tour
Tired of fucking the same blonde whore after work
in the back of a Contour
I'm tired of faking knots with a stack of ones
Having a lack of funds and resorting back to guns
Tired of being stared at
I'm tired of wearing the same damn Nike Air hat
Tired of stepping in clubs wearing the same pair of Lugz
Tired of people saying they're tired of hearing me rap about drugs
Tired of other rappers who ain't bringin half the skill as me
saying they wasn't feeling me on "Nobody's As Ill As Me"
I'm tired of radio stations telling fibs
Tired of J-L-B saying "Where Hip-Hop Lives"
But if I had a million dollars
I'd buy a damn brewery, and turn the planet into alcoholics
If I had a magic wand, I'd make the world suck my dick
without a condom on, while I'm on the john
If I had a million bucks
it wouldn't be enough, because I'd still be out
robbing armored trucks
If I had one wish
I would ask for a big enough ass for the whole world to kiss
You know what I'm saying?
I'm tired of all of this bullshit
Telling me to be positive
How'm I 'sposed to be positive when I don't see shit positive?
Know what I'm sayin?
I rap about shit around me, shit I see
Know what I'm sayin? Right now I'm tired of everything
Tired of all this player hating that's going on in my own city
Can't get no airplay, you know what I'm sayin?
But ey, it's cool though, you know what I'm sayin?
Just fed up
That's my word
^^^^^
These are my favorite Eminem lyrics, you have to remember these were written sarcasticly in a time when "ca$h money" crew were popular.

The guy is making millions acting like he is black. Does he sound the least bit like a communist?

He sounds more Social-Democratic. Because he is against Bush and the second Iraq war he does not become a communist. You could only say that someone who is in favour of those two things is certainly not a communist. In my opinion, that he is against these things makes him a slightly better person than if he was not.

What constitutes 'acting black'? Do black people have some sort of genetic, heriditary act?

"Yeah they even showed it in the movie right?
lol fuck you. Eminem is not the best hip hop artist alive (Nas) but he is the best battler. Look at who he can make songs with - 50, obie trice, D12, with Dre producing.

Perhaps I should have said it better.
Acting like he knows black suffering.

How does he act like he knows black suffering. Which he might actually understand quite well. All his peeers in rap music are black and he grew up in a deprived area.
