Out of curiosity, we don't seem to be the lot that won't listen to much classical music. Regardless, I do, and believe it to be god's music (even though I do relish Santana, the Beatles, Marley, and others).
Do any of you listen to classical music?

I listen to tons of classical music, whether it would be me trying to study, or me driving around, or possibly trying to calm myself down, or listen to it like I did when I was young so I can learn how to play it on the piano or violin. luckily one day I discovered this guy that goes by the name of Yngwie Malmsteen, who has a mix of rock and classical, so I always thought that guy was cool. Even though we all have our different taste in music, like me being a fan of the bands TOOL, and the melvins...ect..there's still a place for classical in my book.
Regardless, I do, and believe it to be god's music
god?..what god? who the hell is that?

I enjoy classical, Handel, Tchaikofsky, but i like beethoven the best. Musically, i have the most respect for classical, i may not like it as much as i like more modern music, but i have more respect for it because the composers put so much time, and study, and devotion into the songs.

I don't listen to dead white guy music too much but I do like some of it, like Vivaldi. I refuse to put it on a pedestal above all other music though.

Chopin! Chopin! Chopin! If you truly believe that the piano is the pinnacle of stringed instruments this is your composer -- no one was so strictly dedicated to the piano as he, and it shows in the complete beauty of his msterpieces.

Chopin is a bit boring.
Probably the most boring of the romantic era composers. Beethoven and Dvorak are much better as composers of the romantic era. Most music from that era is really great, like Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, etc.
Fuckin great
I'm also not ashamed of saying that the baroque and classic era classical music bores me to death. Mozart, Haydn, Bach. Boring.

I play the violin and viola(and learning the piano/organ) I love the old school classical composers(viz. Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, etc.). I hate Wagner, if you listen to his music compared to anyone else's he begins an idea then in the middle begins a variant, then ends the first idea at a random time and starts at least another 3 between the beginning of the first variation and the ending of the first idea. Layman's words: he starts whenever he wants in a bad way. Grr...damn Wagner! "Richard Wagner's music is better than it sounds." -- Mark Twain

here again we see the use of the generic term 'classical music' referring to all styles predating the advent of the jazz orchestra.
So do you mean does any one like music from the classical era of western european music, or music of the last 300 or so years of Europe?
I enjoy Baroque music mostly of 'classical music', Corelli, Purcell, Vivaldi, Bach and Handel were amazingly talented musicians and composers!!
the Classical era holds less appeal for me, though Mozart and Bheethoven are extroidanary in the use of subtleties of musical expression. The indescribable elegance of Mozart is still unsurpassable.
Most music from that era is really great, like Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, etc.
Fuckin great
Funnily the only 'romantic' composer of those was Wagner. And unlike yourself Zep. Tchaikovsky treasured and admired Bach and Mozart above all other previous composers.
Furthermore, which Strauss are you referring to? All 3 of the famous Strauss' were masters of the Waltz and other dances, and this was their almost sole style of composition, so there is little 'Romantic' about their works. Schubert seems to me to be the only Romantic composer who lacked the arrogance, pretension, self-absorbtion and self-indulgence that typified the ethos of that era in music.

I actually like some classical music, believe it or not. Every now and then when I look for radio stations I turn it to the classical stations and listen, though I'm not aware of the different composers/artists who do some of the songs I like. I really do like Beethoven and Mozart though, and a few others I can't remember what they're called.

I love classical music. I've been working on learning Beethoven's moonlight sonata, but i have a long way to go before i sound like the piece that's playing in my cd player.

I was referring to Richard Strauss, who did play waltzes, but there were waltzes from all epochs of classical music. The fact that he played waltzes has little to do with what era he contributed to.
Funnily the only 'romantic' composer of those was Wagner. And unlike yourself Zep. Tchaikovsky treasured and admired Bach and Mozart above all other previous composers.
Am I supposed to give a shit?

Schubert is considered a classic era composer.
This is a funny thing about classical music....
Beethoven is often sited as a romantic era composer, but died in 1827. Whereas Schubert is sited as a classic era composer, yet he died in 1828.

I usually listen to Beethoven's piano solo's while doing my homework. Mozart could kick Beethoven's musical ass. Beethoven couldn't pull a melody out of his ass even if his life depended on it.
And for the record, Schobert can be considered both high classical and low romantic. It depends on the piece. ;)

How amazing. Just yesterday, I pulled out one of my mom's Mozart CD's and let the music flow. The turkish march is especially great!
BTW, check out this tight political compass of composers (below). Gotta make a note to listen to more Prokofiev!

It had more to do with their common obsession with antiquity - Rome, Greece, etc.
If you're interested in Nazi ideology, and its relationship with art, I highly recomend "Architecture Of Dooom" - fascinating documentry.
I've always kinda had a thing for Mussorgsky . . . but I'd really rather listen to, say, Anthrax (The peace-punk band, not the metal band).

Wagner was an anti-Semite. That's the point I was making.

In Hitler's numerous speeches, he often emphazized the 'aryaness' of Wagner, that his music should be the inspiration for all true germans. Its funny, whenever I listen to Wagner, I have an overwhelming urge to invade Poland!! =D

I do like classical music, (well I have to cus I play the piano),but I distinguish Vivaldi(4 seasons's great),Chopin(now I play Opus post.69 Nr.2 10a.(Fassung nach der Eigenschrft, a well known one..)who I adore, especially his preludes.I like all the great composers and Bach-he's not boring(I like listening to him but not playing his pieces, ugh, I have a terrible fuga: P)-but generally I listen to piano pieces.

Unless I can play it at annoyingly loud volume at 3am, i won't listen to it.
Classical lacks bang.
I'm not saying it's bad music; I can listen to it and appreciate the skill that went into it's creation. It just ain't my flavour

I play the violin and viola(and learning the piano/organ) I love the old school classical composers(viz. Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, etc.). How fun! Good for you man. I used to play the violin (and was damn good at it too!) but quit a little after I got in middle school cus I thught only nerds played the violin, or were in band for that matter. What an idiot I was. That's like one of those things that I regret till this day.
Anyways, classical music is fun. Everybody's mentioned all the good composers (and ones that I don't know). I get my fix every once in a while on late night public radio :D
I don't know if "Flight of the Bumblebee" is classical music but that's a bad ass jam righ there!

It was rumored that Wagner was madly anti-Semetic.
However, I do love the Ride of the Valkyries. :)
My favorites include:
Vivaldi
Mozart
Beethoven
Tchaikovsky
Dvorak
Rachmaninov
I'm also partial to Baroque, as we have an exceptional Handel & Haydn Society Symphony here in Boston.

i used to be first violin in the local youth orchestra. then they moved me back to second violin to help out the little chumps who had no idea what harmony was. the nutcracker was wicked fun.
i am very partial to dvorak and rossini.
mozart is delightful. the symphony of errors is brilliant. and he also wrote this neat little minuet that you lay the music on the table -(it´s one sheet) and a violin stands on either side and plays what they see. it´s really really brilliant and the notes are in perfect balance and harmony. one is bsically playing rightside up and the other one upsidedown.
and let´s be honest, who doesn´t like vivaldi?

pfffft..........it lacks bang? are you kidding me? classical allows for practically more bang than any other variety. of course, it´s all artfullyorchestrated and maybe not the type that suits you. when jen and i were in ithaca spending the night at a friend´s, he decided to turn on some soothing classical music to put us to sleep. we got this frenzied rush of violins and these low alarming horns which apparently depicted someone being chased through the forest by a wild beast. or so paul explained it to us. it wasn´t soothing and we told him to shut the fucking radio off. if you listen to the right sort of classical stuff, you´d be surprised. another thing i like about classical is that it allows you to think and doesn´t distract you completely from the task at hand but instead keeps you focused. i used to do my homework to classical music.
