this is a difficult topic for me. Take Hiroshima. Many many innocent civilians were killed, but millions more would have been killed. What are your opinions?

On what the Atomic Bomb? Truman Knew that Jappan was close to giving up... it's a falsehood that they would have fought to the end. True, the soldgers may have but the command was ready to give up before the bomb was dropped. It was clearly not needed.

It was wrong, period. Total warfare is morally unjust. Celtic is right, there was ample evidence to which the US government had access that pointed to the fact that Japan was ready to surrender.

I share your opinion even tho i didnt know that Japan was almost ready to give up. Killing civilians is inexcusable.

Anything nuclear is wrong in one way or another. Apart from a nuclear family.

I strongly agree with RedCeltic, that bomb should never have been dropped. After Pearl Harbour, the command of the Japanese had next to no fight left in them, and would not have been able to execute any more devastating attacks.
It was simply an American war monger wanting to play with a new toy. Or maybe that's pushing it a bit far in some people's eyes ;)

BenJammin, i think that you are exaggerating.... perhaps the americans wanted to base their standing as a super-power, and so used the bomb to prove to the world that they are and imperium that mustn't be played with. but i'm only speculating...

It's interesting. I saw the HBO movie about Truman, (Which didn't even include the assassination attempt on his life, probably due to the fact they would actually have to go into what was the cause of such drastic actions in Puerto Rico...i.e imperialism. Also, what happened to the two gunmen and their families. One was sentenced to death, but then changed to life, then released by Jimmy Carter. The other, who died, wife was sent to jail for no reason. Her un-born child almost killed by the gov't and she was spied on for decades.) and in it he said, after a military officer said that scientists said the bomb should never be used, that what the hell did we [USA gov't] spend billions and not use it. That why do they think they built it for.
That comment is very interesting due to the fact, it gives a hint that if Japan wanted to surrender and was going to, the USA and their Truman didn't really care and wanted to use it anyway, because the USA gov't spent billions on the project. It all was just a big experiment.
