In the last part of the LOR, the Hobbits are on their way back home. The movies dont mention this part so you have to read the book. I don't have the book anymore so if anyone knows what I am talking about please let me know.
When the Hobbits return home, they find that it has been overrun by the "Big People" and Saruman is the leader. When the Hobbits ask their fellow villagers what has been happening, a very interesting subject comes up.
Pipeweed is being confiscated all over the land where it is found, and the Hobbit Villagers must grow it secretly, careful not to let anyone know they are growing it. But if they get caught with it, the "Big People" confiscate it. The Hobbits later revolt and overthrow the big people and Saruman dies.
Now doesn't that sound a little like a drug war? Please, if anyone can come up with quotes or anything else to support or oppose my theory, post your answers here.
I only ask the ones who have read the books because I think they would know what I'm talking about. Tolkien also explains how there was one grower called Old Toby who grew a pipeweed unknown to anyone else, because he kept it secret! Anyways, comment on this because I can totally see a Drug War in the making right here.

Well, they revolted not because of pipeweed but because the "Big People" were treating them badly.
It was sometime since i read

I know many factors contributed to their revolt. Yeah not just the pipeweed, but you know how hobbits are with their pipeweed!
But there was a specific part where one of the villagers brings up that subject. It reminded me of a drug war for some reason. Only a minor part of the book, but it really made me think what Tolkien was saying.

I think there was.
Wait,lemme check the book...
Yea,pipeweed and other goods were conficated by the Shirrifs for 'fair distribution'.

Now what really bugs me, is that the movie left this ending out. Why would they disregard such a fantastic ending? Maybe the movie producers are also being pushed around by the "Big People", or their time was cut too short (most likely not since the movie was totally long as hell). I wonder if this part was left out for one of these reasons.
Thank you for posting that quote. :) Perhaps I'm not the only one who wonders about it. . Is there a reference to that so maybe I can check on the net? Haven't seen much of anything about this on the net.

Pipeweed is tobacco not marijuana. The pipeweed was confiscated from the Hobbits because it had a great deal of market value outside the Shire.

just so you know Tolkien said many many many times that Lord Of The Rings was not an allegory, he hated allegories.

You're welcome.
Can't find any reference on the net. You've got to read the book
And yeah, pipeweed was something like tobacco.
They didn't want to promote smoking to children watching the show

 Yeah I already know he hated allegories. I'm sure he knew people would try to make something more out of it, though he made quite a few references about how men would populate middle earth in the end, and everything else would fade.
About the pipeweed, I suppose one could say it was tobacco. I suppose I'd have to accept the fact that it was tobacco, from the nicotiana plant. If cannabis had only grown in conjunction with nicotiana during those times of middle earth... Hobbits would have definitely been first to try! :)

Has anyone seen the second film?
Im sure when the two hobbits are smoking their pipeweed in the ruins of Saruman's tower they are stoned as hell. I think Peter Jackson took them down the cannabis route.

LOL!! I never knew of this pipeweed thing, mostly because the books are boring as hell (the movies rock though).
I bet nobody 'cept us would see this connection of 'Big Guy' suppression of the 'lower guy'. Not that I smoke pot or anything :P

Yeah was that when they found Saruman's stash in Isengard? I also wonder about why they looked like that in the movie. You gotta remember they were also in New Zealand at the time, and I think pot is quite loose over there, isn't it? Interesting...

Thats so funny, I Love Pippin and Merry.
Cutest thing in the world is when they are dancing and singing in the prancing pony.
