I am still fairly new to chord progressions... is there a specific order that I should follow, or just whatever sounds good to me?

Can I create my own chord progression or is it a rigid concept?

Rigid. Artists who deviate from A-D-E, or the power-chord equivelent*, often disapear in third-world countries, or, in the developed west, are arrested.

www.guitartabs.cc (http://www.guitartabs.cc) has a very good forum on this sort of stuff.
A-D-E is the way to go though.
I also like A-D-G-D, and no-one has arrived to arrest me yet VMC :P

Depends on what sound you're going for, the standard rock progression (ADE) is actually the first, fourth, and fifth note in a scale, in ADE it would be the A major scale, if you wanted the same sound in G, you would do the progression GCD. A deeper understanding of scales will lead to stranger chord progression, or you could just do what you think sounds good which is fine too i suppose. Its strange for some reason, certain notes sound good together to us, and some just don't, so playing it by ear shouldn't be too hard, but music theory is always fun.
