Colombia 'foiled attempt on Bush'

The largest guerrilla group in Colombia ordered an assassination attempt on US President George W Bush during a recent visit there, a senior official says.
Colombian Defence Minister Jorge Alberto Uribe said Mr Bush was targeted in the city of Cartagena last Monday.

Informers and other intelligence sources revealed the attempt, he said.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have long accused the US of meddling in the country's 40-year civil war.

The Farc's seven-man ruling body ordered guerrilla units to make an attempt on Mr Bush's life, Mr Uribe said.

The Colombian authorities insisted that the attempt was thwarted by the heavy security net thrown up around the US president which, apart from his own secret service details, included 15,000 members of the Colombian security forces.

The Farc have a long list of reasons for wanting Mr Bush dead, most pressing is the fact that Washington provides over $600m in mainly military aid to Bogota and supplies intelligence from US listening stations, satellites and spy planes that are focused on Colombia.

Another reason is the issue of extradition.

The US has indicted much of the Farc high command on drugs trafficking charges and two senior Farc commanders in prison seem set to sent to face American justice.

The fact that the guerrillas would even consider killing the most powerful and heavily protected man on earth shows that US involvement in Colombia is so deep that the rebels feel they have very little to lose.

Killing Bush has no use at all. There are dozens of people ready for replacement and you become known as terrorist.

The government will use the hystery followed upon a presidents dead to wipe out the "terrorists". Effectivly shutting us up by imprisoning, excecuting revolutionaries and sympathizers.

Armed struggle in the rich industrious countries has no use at this point.

If armed struggle in the advance capitalist nations has no use at this point i
would agree as we do not have the organized resistance and support we
need. But that does not mean however, that this situation will remain the same.
Material Conditions change everyday and inevitably - there's going to be armed
struggle in the industrialized Capitalist countries. And Killing Bush at this
point would only complicate things.

It would be both stupid and short-sighted.If someone claiming to be a leftist killed a US president could you imagine the consequences? What would be a better excuse for the Borgeoise to tighten their grip on power? They would clamp donw on any leftist group, infiltrating them, splitting them up, gaoling their members. It would be hell. Trade Union rights would virtually be scrapped, and anyone actively agitating as a communist would get themselves a police record. it would be like the 50's again.

Anyway, I seriously doubt that FARC were actually going to do this, they've just said it to get publicity: there's no way a gunman would be able to get anywhere near the bastard.

The upper classes would not need this as an excuse. The class war has already begun, but our side is not doing any shooting. The solution to our problem is action, not idle dissatisfaction.
