CPP expresses political support to nationwide strike against oil price increases
November 24, 2004

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today expressed "full political support" to tomorrow's planned nationwide transport strike and demonstrations against unabated increases in prices of petroleum products.

CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said that tomorrow's planned protest actions are "necessary in order to express the people's utter disgust over the collusion between the Arroyo regime and the foreign multinational oil companies in pushing the retail prices of oil products to oppressively high levels."

"Launching a transport strike supported by the broad masses is the only way to compel the oil companies to reduce oil prices. Oil companies would not voluntarily roll back their prices," added Rosal.

Rosal lambasted foreign multinational oil companies for "making superprofits at the expense of ordinary Filipino consumers." He said oil companies exploit the recent increases in the price of crude oil.

"In fact," Rosal added, "oil companies carry out inter-company trade. These companies engage in oil extraction and buy crude from their own mother companies. They earn great profits from every increase in the prices of crude oil. They earn greater profits when they oppress consumers with increased retail prices."

Rosal said that the demand to scrap the oil deregulation law was "fully justified." The oil deregulation law, he added, has allowed oil companies to increase oil prices at will.

Meanwhile, Rosal warned the Arroyo regime, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) against carrying out violent dispersals of mass protest actions.

Rosal reiterated that Red fighters of the New People's Army (NPA) do not participate in mass actions and warned the AFP and PNP against using the "NPA bogey" to justify the violent suppression of people's protest demonstrations. ###

CPP congratulates transport workers, sees bigger and longer strikes in coming months
November 25, 2004

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today congratulated transport workers for launching a successful nationwide strike, even as it said that "bigger and longer strikes" are needed to compel the Arroyo government and oil companies to rollback "substantially" the prices of petroleum products.

It released the following statement:

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) wishes to congratulate the several hundred thousands of jeepney, bus and tricycle drivers and other transport workers for successfully launching a nationwide strike to push the Arroyo government and oil companies for a substantial rollback in the prices of petroleum products. The show of nationwide unity is commendable.

The strike enjoyed the full support of the Filipino people. The mass of workers and peasants, as well as students, teachers and other professionals are also clamoring for a rollback of oil prices and the scrapping of the oil deregulation law. These demands were vigorously asserted by the strike.

The success of your strike lies in the correctness and urgency of your demands.

We condemn the Arroyo government and the oil companies for refusing to heed the demands you raised. The CPP also condemns the extremely insulting P0.50 discount offered by oil companies.

If the Arroyo government fails to address the demands to roll back oil prices and scrap the oil deregulation law, you may need to prepare to launch bigger and longer strikes in the coming months. Uniting with the rest of the Filipino people will ensure the success of such strikes.

Such strikes are absolutely necessary to compel the callous Arroyo government to heed the demands of the Filipino people.
