View Full Version : Book Club

Ok, i've just thought this up, ok, so so it may not be a brilliant idea but it is worth considering.
I propose that people set up book clubs, which welcome people from the two sides of the political spectrum. Each week they read a book - one week a left-wing one, the next a right-wing one and so on. They then discuss the book without dismissing it as "red crap" or "reactionary bollocks", but with intellect and logic, debating the book. I think that this idea could help us understand what may be wrong with each of our idealogies, as well as each other.
This post is also a call to each and every politically-minded person who reads this message. We have to stop insulting each other. We have to stop dismissing ideas just beacuse they arent left or right wing enough. We need to consider what is truly best. I know this sounds a little non-communist coming from me, but this idea isnt anti- any political idealogy. Yes, i consider Stalin, Bush and Hitler as evil pricks, but we communists belive that our experiences shape our outlook -so instead of insults and lack of discussion, we need some sort of political glasnost. Look at Gorbachev. He may have been a revisionist, but he managed to destroy the one thing that gave Communism a bad name - the Eastern Bloc.
So, consider the book idea and consider true debate. Acting like children and acting like fools will not help either side.

There are hardly any right wingers left
Other than capitalist imperial who hasn't been posting of late and
Mr money bags who always seems to be in a hurry
with his two line smart ass posts(let alone read a book and
debate about it)
The opposition has been purged
That leaves only you guys to squabble among each other

This isnt just in a Che-Lives context, but in society. I think the fact that we have few right-wingers left is slightly negative, as it means that we have less capitalistic and reactionary views available on the board.

This may very well be true, but it's "their own fault". Consider lucid, Y2A, etc. They've all been banned for spamming or worse. There's really not much we can do about those types.
That got me thinking. To the cappies here, what makes you stay?

Great idea Xphile.. I have started to read a bit more as of lately, mind has gone amuck.
If anyone would wish to suggest a book, I'm in on the fun..
I agree that intelligent debates need to happen more often, though I am not so sure that will ever really happen..
Besides, certain administrators have a new psychic ability which enables them to know more about members than the members do themselves.
We have a member, whose name is always questioned, that was thought to be somewhat solid in his political beliefs on the left, yet the administrators, psychic abilities and all, insist that he is in-fact right-wing.
I think our first book debate should be on the book "Psychic Bullshit: How to Pretend You Really Know" -- redstar's favorite.
Honestly though (have to keep bringing up my restriction one way or another, I still have yet to receive any reason as to why), the book club idea is a good one.
Someone choose a book, message me, whatever. Sounds exciting.

Great idea but I agree there are not enough capatalist members on this forum but we could join up with a capatalist forum. capitalistparadise (http://s7.invisionfree.com/capitalistparadise/) looks good it seems to accept the possibilty that there are anti-capalist people in this world just like we accept the possiblity that there are anti-leftist people in the world.
Perphaps you should post there XPhile2868 with your idea?

Hmm... I wouldn't trust the Capitalist Paradise people. They seem friendly enough, but then they start editing your posts to make you look bad.
Otherwise, it is a brilliant idea and should certainly be tried.

Hey just a suggestion but maybe you could get in touch with the moderators
of some pro-capitalism boards and organise a special sub forum somewhere on the main page of the site where
people can do what xphile suggests
A collaboration between left and right to enchance discussion on the internet
If done in the right way this could increase traffic and bring new converts to
che-lives.com

Why not just start the book club amongst Che-Lives users?
Getting the thing off to a start would be priority number one I would assume. It is easy enought to debate the morals and interpretations of books amongst persons with shared beliefs, let alone doing it between similar high-school rivals.
Why doesn't someone pick a semi-common book to get started on. With the way of this week, I'd need a little prior notice in order to get my hands on the book as well as make time for reading..

The art of warfare-Sun Tzu
I just seem to be reading it now that's why
Not sure if we can debate anything about it
but if anyone is interested they can post here

Raisa, i dont think we should have more rammed down our throats, i'm saying that we need to make debate bipartisan, or else the debate will just be full of sycophantic factions instead of truly differing viewpoints.
