The death of Socialism in Cuba :(

It's a shame really. Cuba may not have been steamrolling it's way to a Communist society, but at least it was Socialist in many ways. Now Castro is friends with a corrupt, decadent country that hasnt been Communist since the death of Mao.

What did you really expect? The Cuban government needs all the frinds it can get to assure it's survival.

i have to agree with h&s... cuba has to find some way to expand its economy and make the land more open to the world and get out of its isolation...better to sleep with China than the US :(

Castro ought to shoot him in the face.

That, unfortuantely, would be too good for that reactionary pig

The BBC said that China is going to "invest" $500,000,000 in Cuba's nickel industry (Cuba has one of the largest deposits of nickel in the world).

I'm very curious about the "details" of this "deal".

What effects it will have on Cuban nickel miners and refining workers, for example.

And how and to what extent China intends to profit by this arrangement at the expense of the Cuban people.

It is, quite simply, the beginning of the age of Chinese economic imperialism. Already, state-owned Minmetals corp. of China has purchashed Norelco (sp?) of Canada for 6 billion. They are throwing around cash like mad, trying to buy up all the sources of raw materials that they will need for their continuing growth (especially industrial; their industrial production growth rate was a whopping 30.4% last year.)

Cuba needs allies from political potencies to survive, especially with the commercial block. Let them make deals, let's just hope that Castro does not hand out the country to China as he did to the USSR.

I think that this deal was a good idea, and will help Cuba in many ways.

yes, i do agree with this opinion, i think Cuba can't stay a "close country" forever and maybe Cuba must be open to the world.

If "being open to the world" means capitalism, then I think it is not only a ridiculous idea, but simply fucking pathetic that anybody would sell themselves out like that. Considering the world is pretty much 99% capitalist, being open to it will most certainly kill socialism in Cuba.

It will be interesting to see how this deal with China works out, and like redstar said, I wonder what this means for the Cuban people?
