Manu Chao. Is he great or what?
For those of you unfamiliar, he is French-born, but plays latin music, mostly in Spanish, but sometimes in English, French, and Portuguese. Really down to earth, stuff. Very progressive lyrics. Anyone here like him?
Solo voy con mi pena
Sola va mi condena
Correr es mi destino
Para burlar la ley
Perdido en el corazn
De la grande Babylon
Me dicen el clandestino
Por no llevar papel
Pa' una ciudad del norte
Yo me fui a trabajar
Mi vida la dej
Entre Ceuta y Gibraltar
Soy una raya en el mar
Fantasma en la ciudad
Mi vida va prohibida
Dice la autoridad
Solo voy con mi pena
Sola va mi condena
Correr es mi destino
Por no llevar papel
Perdido en el corazn
De la grande Babylon
Me dicen el clandestino
Yo soy el quiebra ley
Mano Negra clandestina
Peruano clandestino
Africano clandestino
Marijuana ilegal
Solo voy con mi pena
Sola va mi condena
Correr es mi destino
Para burlar la ley
Perdido en el corazn
De la grande Babylon
Me dicen el clandestino
Por no llevar papel

Yeap i agree with you.... I've been a fan of him for a long time. It's hard keeping in touch with him here in the states he usually plays and performs world wide execept here... if you pay attetion to some of his lyrics they are very leftist, in many he supports the EZLN, in some song he disses on the U$.. MANU CHAO kicks ass!

Do you have his Clandestino album?
He's all about the EZLN.

Yeah, he's damn good. One of the only albums I have that I can relax too, all my other albums are very moody.
Have you heard any Fela Kuti?

Fela Kuti and the Africa 70 - fantastic, black president. Nigerian dissident afro beat. Do you know the music of one of his 50 odd sons - Femi Kuti? Also brilliant and modern take on afro beat.
Anyway yes, Manu Chao is great, did you check for his old band Mano Negra?
Me gustas Marijuana me gustas tu.

I love the fact that Manu Chao utilizes many audio elements other than melodies in his music. In Mentira , for instance, we hear an extract from some Spanish news program which touches upon the Kyoto Protocol and the USA's stance. I think that is just great, I admire the way he uses music to get across his message. That's art and politics at the same time.
Oh, and here's a must-hear: Denia . It's from Proxima Estacion: Esperanza , and it's about Algeria. It's in Arabic but here are the English lyrics to it:
poor algeria
life beats in the rhythm of your dismay
life itself is a lie
my heart aches to watch you
poor algeria
life through your eyes
life as lie
life swarming with police
life soaked with
mothers’tears
life racked with madness
poor algeria
who really cares
in america about
what’s happening in algeria?
who really knows??

I hate to to say it but BOZG is the smartest one in this thread.
If anyone listened to me they would of found out about Manu Chao at least when I bagged the Cat Empire and no doubt before as well. He was born in Argentina or Chile or somewhere I got told then moved to France and he's huge with Germans.
Anyway I'd rather shit like Fela Kuti.

Fantastic artist, and definitely a leftist. He was allowed to travel through FARC held territories unmolested when he toured Colombia in the late nineties, and iirc he also went to the Chiapas.

---------> Manu Chao's official website (http://www.manuchao.net)
He was born in Paris out of a French journalist mother, his father was Spanish. His first band (of which he was the leadsinger) was called The Hot Pants. When he grew up he moved to the old town part of Barcelona, where he still lives. He first presented his album "Proximá Estacion: Esperanza" (meaning "Next Stop: Hope")
in a subwaystation in Barcelona which was renamed "Esperanza" for the occasion.
He likes playing chess on the street with friends and going out in pubs with friends.
