For more than forty years Cuban exiles have with seemingly unabashed U.S goverment apporoval, financial & tactical backing - waged a fanatical war against the popular revolution of the Cuban people and specifically it's chief instigator and talisman - Fidel Castro Ruz.
From the numerous and well publisized attempts on Fidel, everything from the classic seductive femme fatal assasin to the frankly ridiculous exploding cigar to the full time propaganda, sabotage, violence and political lobbying machinery - two men stand out like stubborn welts on a pigs arse. Both veterans of the defeated invasion of La Boca de Cochino's..
Jorge Mas Canosa (thankfully recently deceased)had amassed an estimated $900mill at the time of his death through racketerring, drugs and arms dealing and some legitamate business. Castro's nemesis and most rabid opponent he sucessfully lobbied a succession of feckless presidents into ever more extreme policies toward Cuba in exchange for delivering the exile vote in Florida - a pivitol vote. Cia trained he founded the infamous CANF & various underground commando units. He controlled the output of several radio stations which to this day spew anti Castro venom and right wing rhetoric in a seamless loop of bitterness. Cuba has a full time job trying to block the signal which openly encourages insurrection.
Moderate exiles have been routinley threatened, maimed and murdered by the Miami mafia fro not being vociferous enough or heaven forbid endorsing dialogue with Castro's regime. Homes and businesses of moderate exiles were targeted in a mid-eighties firebombing terror campaign on U.S soil. Jorge Mas Canosa was the don of the Miami mafia since it's inception, after his passing the mob are leaderless and directionless and a new generation whom do not bear the scars of the past may begin building bridges across the Florida straits.
In my next post I'll give the lowdown on the second figure, someone who certainly does bear scars - the original plane hijacker - Luis Carriles Posada.
