Certainly the United States can afford higher standards of living than Cuba, since it is an imperialist superpower. But have you ever wondered why no Cubans ever tried to run to Mexico, or Haiti, or Jamaica, or any other Latin American capitalist country? Because standards of living in Cuba are higher than standards of living in any of its Latin American neighbors.
So much for "poverty and grief"...
