I KNOW! Cuba would have been SO much better off under the U.S. backed Batista regime! Fucking Communist pricks, always overthrowing perfectly good dictatorships.

Here are some statistics compiled from data given by none other than the CIA World Factbook (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/) (which can be expected to be heavily biased against Cuba):

LIFE EXPECTANCY IN LATIN AMERICA:

Cuba - 76.8 years
Chile - 76.35 years
Jamaica - 76.07 years
Uruguay - 75.87 years
Argentina - 75.48 years
Mexico - 74.94 years
Paraguay - 74.4 years
Venezuela - 73.81 years
Ecuador - 71.89 years
Colombia - 71.14 years
Brazil - 71.13 years
Peru - 70.88 years
Dom. Rep. - 67.63 years
Bolivia - 64.78 years
Haiti - 51.78 years

LITERACY IN LATIN AMERICA:

Uruguay - 98%
Argentina - 97.1%
Cuba - 97%
Chile - 96.2%
Paraguay - 94%
Venezuela - 93.4%
Ecuador - 92.5%
Colombia - 92.5%
Mexico - 92.2%
Peru - 90.9%
Jamaica - 87.9%
Bolivia - 87.2%
Brazil - 86.4%
Dom. Rep. - 84.7%
Haiti - 52.9%

Certainly the United States can afford higher standards of living than Cuba, since it is an imperialist superpower. But have you ever wondered why no Cubans ever tried to run to Mexico, or Haiti, or Jamaica, or any other Latin American capitalist country? Because standards of living in Cuba are higher than standards of living in any of its Latin American neighbors.

So much for "poverty and grief"...

At the risk of prolonging this comemierda's topic:
it's perhaps more useful to compare data from the US and Cuba (also from the cia website), remembering that one is a poor "Third world" country suffering a four decade blockade at the hands of the other, wealthy, "First" world country:

US
Infant Mortality 6.63/ 1000 live births
Life expectancy (at birth) 77.43 years
Literacy 97%

CUBA
Infant Mortality 6.45/ 1000 live births
Life expectancy (at birth) 77.04 years
Literacy 97%

Looks to me the only thing the US can offer Cuba is to leave it the hell alone to keep on celebrating the legacy of Guevara, Castro, Hart, Santamaria, Espin and Pais, and of the Cuban people's own love of freedom, democracy and the right to dignity in life.

The poverty in Cuba: a poverty of illiteracy, illness and Dollar-dictatorship.

The grief in Cuba: that of the Capitalists, that their Casino island has been over-run by the workers; and the grief of the cuban people, that it didn't happen sooner.

The "free country of the united states": one in which you are free to be exploited, and to explout others- but always at a price. Free?

Socialismo o muerte.
