Right bout time someone gave them their own thread, someone probs did already and I missed it but I dont really care.

Right so tell us your feelings on the most leftist punk rock group to come out of england in the 70's.

About the band members how, mick, paul and topper came from working class backgrounds to Joe who if i remember right had a quite well off father.

Hows about the messages in their songs? guns on the roof of course inspiring us to shoot racing pigeons. guns of brixton inciting us to give coppers what for.

Talk about anything to do with the clash!

Right 'bout time somebody quoted the song White Punks On Hope.

They said that we were trash,
Well the name is Crass, not Clash,
They can stuff their punk credentials,
'Cause it's them that take the cash.
They won't change nothing with their fashionable talk,
Their RAR badges and their protest walk.
Thousands of white men standing in a park,
Objecting to racism, like a candle in the dark,
Black man's got his problems and his way to deal with it,
So don't fool yourself [into thinking] you're helping with your white liberal shit.
If you care to take a closer look at the way things really stand,
You'd see we're all just niggers to the rulers of this land . . .

Personally I like the sound of The Clash.
They played reggae rock, with a bit of punk, not punk rock. :)

Nice lyrics. While I don't agree with all of it, I gotta agree with that final sentiment.

Argueably they played both, compare armagedeon time and revoloucion rock to say white roit and complete control.

Plus I guess i worded myself wrong before, I was trying to say that its admirable that when Joe could have had a comfortable well off life considering what he was born into he chose not to and instead became a non-conformist.

And you cant say they didnt carry out what they preached, all the members (not including tory chimes) served prison sentances. Even if one of them was for stealing a pillowcase.

They were an awesome band, but I can think of a lot more that were better during that era.

A LOT more that were BETTER, from that era????

Okay, start naming them.

I might say the Neurotics but they didn't release their first single until 79.

Haha, VCM, I love that old song. Don't agree with most of it (as Crass was most likely just sore that they couldn't get the cash for their Anarchist island in the sea) but I love the point at the end about the "White liberal shit". Take a note Victor.

Stiff Little Fingers ? I dont' know, that statement makes no sense. There are few bands "better" than the Clash, especially not from that era.

Okay I'll try to clarify.

So my questionto him/her is if there are indeed a lot more bands that were better than the Clash then why don't you name some?

Now Urban you mentioned SLF, one of my favorites but I'd still give the nod to the Clash because they were so much more than a great punk band. Joe Strummer was an incredible talent.

To expand on the SLF comparison. SLF at their best were as good as the Clash however the Clash at their worst are better than SLF at their worst. And yeah that's just my opinion but that's all this board is anyway right?

And yeah, SLF at their worst was pretty bad.

I don't think any of those bands come close. Crass ? Did they even play music or did they just put all their instruments in a room and throw bricks and fireworks at them ?

Heh, I like Crass, I just don't really like their music.

I dunno. There were quite a few.

Name one.

Okay Virgin and Petey at least you named some bands. While I like some of the bands mentioned, I don't agree that they were as good as the Clash (my opinion). Some of them also were not part of that first wave of punk either (era). Of all the ones mentioned I'd say Chumbawamba comes pretty close to matching the Clash, they certainly outdid them lyrically as did some of the other bands. They also have a sense of humor.

I like Conflict too, Colin is a huge Clash/Strummer fan and was at one time said to be working on a Strummer tribute album.

I also have to address my dislike for CRASS, as Urban mentioned did they even play music? Their lyrics were great but obviously they never heard of melody and Eve was the only one who could sing worth a shit and didn't do enough as far as I'm concerned. Now, I say all of this having not listened to every CRASS record or song. I base it on people playing the odd song here and there for me and the copy of Stations... that I have and could never listen to fully in one sitting.

Minioswald, no doubt when you hear the name Chumbawamba you thin Tubthumper and music videos, well Chumbawamba have been around a good 20 years and did many great things before and after Tubthumper. Pick up "Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records". You can often find that along with "Never Mind the Ballots" on one CD these days, both are great punk records.

Thank you and good night.

Ive heard that! :P

It was infact ole MiniOswald who introduced me to The Clash. My fave track has gotta be Train in Vain, followed by English Civil War.

I like the variety of music they play: Punk, Pop, Reggae, Conventional Rock... Its all good!

HUZZAH for The Clash!

The Clash rock. End of story. Just before and just after them there may have been bands greater...I guess The Stones, Led Zep and Dylan could be counted but they all started long before the Clash....
