i am personally of the opinion that no government is doing enough to stop the impending war, and that neither side is right, although i dont understand the politics. it is over kashmir, is it not?

Yeah, two old Idiots still haven't learned how to share, and would rather put their people's lives before them, all in the pursuit of a few pieces of land.

Hopefully, the war between these two countries will never start. Two states says that they wouldn't attack first, only defend. The problem still stands on the dead point.
The presidents of both countries , have met with president of the Russian Federation. Putin took a try to solve the conflict, but Indian president didn't even want to listen to the president of Pakistan. So, the dispute over Kashmir wasn't settled.
I heard that Bush also, wishes to take part in solving that conflict.
But my own opinion is that Kasmir's problem will never be solved. The negotiations will lead to the new negotiations, and the war will lead to the new war.
One of the countries just have to go on compromise, but the compromise will never happen.

What is rarely said is that Kashmir is simply a nineteenth centrury consttuct made by the British empire.
The conflict is also exxagerated by religion.
I personally would not simply wish to see a referendum. This would end up simply with dictatorship of the majority rather than a democracy which represesnts proportionately majority and minority interests - and there is a difference between democracy and simple dictatorship of the majority.
What is needed is a solution which reflects the majority and minority interests across kashmir, but given it is in the hands of the islamic fundamentalist state to the north and the Hindu state to the south which has instigated anti-muslim pogromss it will not be very likely

Its not entirely over Kashmir. Don't forget centuries of muslim-hindu feuding. The main cause has been the mounting tension over international terrorism. Do you remember a few months ago the attack carried out by Pakistani terrorists on the Indian Parliament. That set this whole bloody mess of events into where we stand now. The fighting in Kashmir is really calmed down compared to what is going to happen on the Pakistani-Indian border. I do not think nukes are going to be used.

the risk of nuclear warfare is quite low, and conflict on a more traditional level (tanks, etc) is more likely. However, as long as noone does anything stupid, nothing will come of it...barring unforseen craziness or more wacky hijinks from our friends al quaeda

I just LOVE how everyone shys away from important issues like this one, and instead flocks to debates about the f*king world cup...

Self determination for kashmir.
International pressure to reduce tensions in the region.
World communism now.
What do we want when do we want it.
Well at least the first two.

Its especially dangerous now that pakistan feels backed by the U$, they'll push their luck a little farther than they normally would.

I just want to point out that there was going to be an election back in the day to decide which country got Kashmir...it was obvious that Pakistan would win as the population was mostly muslim, so India invaded...how American of them, eh?
