it takes like 4 days on th bus. My wife already said no.

I'm sure the people of Ottawa will do us proud and put on a wonderfull protest. And their is usually plenty of busloads from Torornto for something like this.
Once the hype over the Grey cup ends this will get more press.

Just for the record, he will be in Ottawa for a day. He had originally intended to stay for two days and speak in Parliament, but since he was afraid of being booed in the Assembly he's speaking in Halifax instead (where or why I can only guess).
However, he will still be joining us on the 30th and he will be dining at the Museum of Civilization; my step-sister's school is across from the Museum and it's going to be evacuated for the day.

Greetings Comrades,

I returned from Ottawa last night around 6:30 PM and was much to exhausted to type anything at that time.

As I mentioned in my previous e-mail, I went on Monday morning and arrived in Ottawa on Monday afternoon. Most people however went on the Tuesday. It was good to see so many familiar faces, in total I must have bumped into over 50 familiar faces and at least 15 people who I know well enough to call Comrade. There was also 4 Young Left members in Ottawa, including myself.

I also got to meet many comrades for the first time, especially from CPC-ML and PQC-ML.

Here is how the events, from my prospective, unfolded:

Monday: After getting off the bus, we walked over to the welcome centre which was set up on the University of Ottawa campus. We got info there, and tried to find out about billeting for the night, but it seemed though this was not availble yet.

We went to the Palestinian solidarity demo, which was very militant and loud. Some of Toronto's most militant people were there, and some peeps from Montreal as well such as Jaggi.

After that, some of us returned to the welcome centre, as there was not much to do. I was with a Comrade from M-L who drove me back. At the welcome centre, we ate some hummos and pita, and drank juice. I met some Comrades from North Bay, and we where both suprised to find out that we frequent the same online message board che-lives.com.

I started getting bored and decided to walk around the city. It surprised me to see how multicultural Ottawa is, I guess I just thought it wouldn't be. They have nothing but buses there to travel on, which seem to be always packed, and it costs $2.60 to get on so I just walked everywhere. There was military personal everywhere. I went to the Rideu Centre which is sort of like a miniture Yorkdale and began to get depresed so I stopped into the LCBO for a bottle of Vodka.

It took me about 30 minutes to find the damn store.

Anyways, eventually I went back to the welcome centre, but I couldn't drink in there so I just ate more hummus and made a few phone calls until it was time for a meeting which involved preparations for tommorow.

I sat with M-L Comrades, and introduced myself as a Young Left Comrade during the meeting introductions, and many people came from different organizations, including OCAP, I.S., PGA, The Dope Poets Society, and others.

I fell asleep for most of the meeting, which was manly stuff for the organizers of the march to be concerned with, and I was a little repusled hearing about some of the collaberation some were ingaging in with police.

Still not finding out about billeting, asked about it, and myself and another Comrade ended up staying at one of the organizer's house, named Karl, which was kind of cold (he had electric heating and was probably saving money) but had beds with blankets. He even cooked us eggs, soup with potatoes, and served pita with beef salami and cheese. However, he was Muslim so I couldn't drink my Vodka.

We watched the news and went to sleep around 12:00 AM.

Tuesday: Got up at 6:30 ish AM.

We went with our new Comrade Karl to a Church to help with preparing a huge vegan stew. However, there was too many people in the kitchen at that time, so my comrade and myself went and caught some wireless access (how I sent my previous e-mail) from outside of some building, then grabbed a $3.99 breakfast at a local diner, where you everday average Jane and Joe sat talking about the Bush visit, we eagerly listened as we heard nothing but negative comments about Bush, calling him things like a "well dressed terrorist".

Driving around the city, there was cops everywhere, almost on every corner. One McDonalds was border up completely and painted black to the point that it was almost unrecognizeable, except for a small sign. Media reports on the car radio said that cops from Toronto and other cities came to "help out". O.P.P., RCMP, CSIS, and Secret Service agents where also out and about.

We went back to the church to replace some people, and began peeling garlic clove after garlic clove, for about 90 minutes, before we left for the Youth assembly back on the U of O campus, there I met up with more M-L Comrades.

The youth rally than marched over to the main rally, which assembled at City hall. I linked up with the Comrades from the McMaster Socialist Crew in Hamilton, The Ontario YCL, KWYC, and some young comrades who are supporters of RCP. I also saw Saroj Bains and Sandra Smith.

The main rally was excellent, and had thousands of people, estimates ranging from from 8,000 to 80,000. but I think there was atleast 30,000 there. It was huge.

We marched to Parliament Hill. Shitty Chants included: "Bush out now!", "Say no to Bush!", and "U.S. out of Canada". There as a lot of "regular" folk there and so there was Canadian Nationalism (not as in white nationalism) and a lot of Canadian flags.

The good chants included: "U.S. Imperialist, No. 1 Terrorist", "Yankee out!", "Pro-Imperialist NDP, running dogs of the bourgeoisie!" (Sparts did that one), "From Iraq [ Grassy Narrows | Haiti | Afghanistan | Sudan ] to Palestine, Occupation is a crime!", "Troops out now!" "Bush is covered in Baghdads blood!".

After, the more militan contingent organized by the PGA bloc split off so that we could march to the Hotel were Bush was staying. Led by a truck with D from Dope Poets Society on top spittin' out lyrics, we got to the police barracades, and I knew things were about to get thick. I joined in and helped bring that shit down. Though we got through a layer of barracades (and chased away a few pigs) we where met by riot cops who we clashed with a bit (and injured one quite nicely) until it was time to fall back. A few peeps got arrested, and hit with paint.

We then did a monuever around to a different area. The two Comrades I was with had to leave back to Toronto, so I caught up with some M-L comrades and the barracades we came to where protected by riot cops already. I went up to the front, and after telling some petty-bourgoeis girls, who where shouting some ridiculous pascifist slogans, to shut their fucking mouths, I began to kick the barracades, and some others joined in. The riot cops immediately swung at us, and they even threatened us with rubber bullet guns. I think they wanted to intimidate militant people in crowd.

Eventually Bush went by at some point, but I had to move back from the barracades before that, as my Comrades called me back.

Eventually, we started to march again, this time to a new barracade, and I stayed behind with some Comrades to get some things out of a car. Later we went back to Parliament Hill for a crappy "vigil" with candels and other stupid shit. After induring 90 minutes of that utter nonsense, another march organizerd by the PGA bloc was led towards the mueseum of civilization were Bush was scheduled to dine on shrimps with lobster, steak, and squash, and other over indulgent decandence and luxury.

We marched all the way to Hull, Quebec and got to very close, knocking over barracades after barracades like playing cards, and making the pigs fall back. We mad eit passed the Scott tissue plant, and were finally stopped by a crazy amnount of riot police.

After marhcing for about 6 and a half hours, and being on my feet for over 8 hours, myself and Comrade were exhausted so we headed back, as the action was no longer progressing and some people were just sitting in the road.

I went back with a Comrade to the welcome centre, now at the OPIRG-UO office, where there was some vegan pita sandwiches that tasted exactly like the stew I helped make earlier.

I called up a comrade on her cell and hooked up with her and another comrade and we went out for a beer, and then back to the same united church to sleep for the night where (finally) we drank some of that Vodka I was waiting for.

We passed out on the floor of the gym with about 5 others around 2 or 3 in the morning.

Wednesday: Awoke around 6:30 AM to find most people gone. Apparently there was some sort of action at the hotel, which we missed.

We went to city hall, had a short rally, and were left with a few hours to kill so we went to the new welcom centre, now located above the Agora bookstore. There we just chatted and watched footage from various people's cameras/laptops.

Around 11:30 AM we headed back to city hall for the busses. By this time, there was about 15 cm of good snow on the ground, and my feet and socks soaked; the last thing I did in Ottawa was get in a snowball fight with other people from Toronto, mostly anarchists.

The busride home was cool, with various comrades playing the guitar and singing on the way, and me enjoying the buzz of gravol, codein, and acetominophen which I took to quell the hangover from the night before.

This is a true story:

I ran out of toliet paper the other day, and I used the same copy of the Worker's Vanguard that I bought in Ottawa to wipe my ass!

But on another note, I agree with a lot of the Sparts positions except 3 major things:

1.) Stalin (and thus a whole other can of worms)
2.) Age of consent (they are wacky on this)
3.) Their cult like behaviour and practices

BOZG
9th December 2004, 16:10
1) Of course the Stalin thing is going to quite a decisive issue for you

2) I can see their point to some extent but there are very clear phsyical and emotional inabilities which they don't accept. There's always a possibility that with human evolution such things could change but not right now.

3) As I raised in another thread, I do not believe that they are cult like in anyway. Any revolutionary recognises the need for democratic centralism and party discipline but their methods of how to create a strong, unified revolutionary party (which I disagree with) do lead to an authoritarian image and internal life.

They take it WAY beyond this, for instance they move people away from their hometown so that they will be away from family and focus more only politics.

Also, they charge insane dues, and do things like "proletarianization" (put petty-bourgeois kids to work in factories).

Lastly, I used to talk to one guy in the Sparts a lot, and he actually stopped talking to me because I got "too friendly" with him (and it's not like I wanted to fuck him or something, I just thought he was cool even though I disagreed with him poltically and wanted him to hang out).

BOZG

I wouldn't disagree completely with your first point. I know that there was only one Spart from Ireland in their Irish section, the rest were from abroad but that is the case with many organisations. I know the founder of the Irish section (who's now left the SL) and he's never told me anything about people being forced to leave their hometowns but people who had shown an interest in moving. Though I would say that an 'interest' can be manipulated.

I actually thought their dues would be quite low. The Irish section is quite small so I would assume a lot is expected of the members here financially. Their material to buy is usually very cheap and their subscriptions are the same. I get an absolute wealth of material from them for €10 (CAN$ 15) a year.

I've never heard of this 'proletarianization' idea, do you know any articles about it?

About the guy you used to talk to, the LO in France is meant to be even worse than that attitude. Internally, the membership is encouraged to be overly dedicated to the point that members are discouraged from sleeping with other members during national meetings, people are discouraged from having kids because it would limit their involvement in the party etc.
