Just post some pictures or something of your biggest influences. I know there are a few bass players here, I've seen at least one Che-Lives member at the Talkbass forum.
Now I'll make you guess who they are. :P

I always liked Matt Freeman from Rancid (and Operation Ivy). Also, Les Claypool and Family Man.

One of the best jazz bassists and one of my favorite bop musicians.

Dude, I forgot how fucking awesome you were.
those would definately be the three rock bassists I'd post. No shit.
That's scary, right there.
As for Dunn, I think you would REALLY like Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign," which has the entire Memphis Group backing him up. earlier stuff for Booker T. and the MGs, but still tight.

I do love Born Under a Bad Sign.
Steve Cropper was in that lineup, no? He rocks.
That was my first ever blues album and still one of my favorites.
Born Under a Bad Sign has one hell of a bassline.

Dave Allen, the first bassist from Gang Of Four taught me how to kick out the disco. Listen to "Damaged Goods" and tell me that doesn't make you want to move!

Pete Wright knew how to write the most catchy yet deceptively simple walking basslines this side of . . . some other bassist. He was also one of the worst vocalists I can think of. I love him.

You really have to step into the past to see sweet, highly skilled basists, and find bass tabs that are fun to play. As a bassist, I know for a fact that most modern music, especially punk and metal, have redundant bass tabs, requiring you do nothing more than bang one note for a while, then another. They require no understanding of beat, rythm, or any of that other stuff.
And a final word.... I just have to say, the bass in a song really determines how good that song is, mostly. Most of the greatest songs have awesome, grooving bass lines.

Justin in Tool's song Schism. Wow that is cool. I play drums, but even I have to admit that bass/guitar melody is cool.

Anti-Capitalist, I KNOW for a fact as a long time musician that you are completely missing the point of music.
Genre has NOTHING to do with skill or performance but the creativity and flair of each individual player and what each song or the band's style calls for. I know that simply listening to Slipknot many people wouldn't rate Mick (#7) as a good guitarist, but he's a shred king!!!
Don't be so closed minded in your approach to music, you'll miss SOO MANY opportunities not just in music, but in life in general!!!
and your observation on the apparent 'worth' of a 'good' song being based on the bass line (no pun intended) is WAY OFF TRACK!! I have played in LITERALLY DOZENS of really awesome rocking groups and ensembles WITH NO BASS PLAYERS EVER EVEN NEAR THE GIG and they have gone off!! Don't be so jaundist and ignorant on the subject, and please you are delving WAY out of your depth here......it's actually quite funny from my perspective to see the over inflated attitudes of naivety showing through. So for your own sake, tone down your attitudes and don't speak in absolutes, ever, especially not about music and in the presence of serious and/or professional musicians.

Another round. I am a bass player if I didn't mention that before, just to clear things up a bit.

^ That is a sexy '52 P. You can buy '51 P reissues, but I really want a '52 P like that. And Sting rules.
http://toolshed.down.net/pix/paulsober.jpg
^ On the subject of Tool bassists, Paul D'Amour was better than Justin.
http://www.mindspring.com/~shimmy/jacolor2.gif
^ Jaco was good, but he gets a bit too much hype in my opinion.
http://www.bassinside.com/2002/october/myunglive2.jpg
^ John Myung again. Any bassist who can play with four fingers is incredibly talented.

Damn, you beat me to it, RedZeppelin. I was going to post Jamerson. Amazing bass player.
So, I'll have to settle for Geddy Lee.
http://www.canehdian.com/genre/rock/a/geddylee/geddy.jpg
Rush rules. But it does take awhile to get acclimated to Geddy's voice. But after that, it's smooth sailing.

Israel Cachaito Lopez,
Definatley my favourite Contrabajo, he invented the modern Tumbao - the groove from which all Cuban Son pulses to. Legendary. On a more modern tip I'd recommend - Squarepusher and even though the RHCP aren't my cup of tea per se - I think Flea is a very accomplished player.
