Also, even if Islamic fundamentalists had a functional nuclear weapon, I highly doubt that they'd know how to use it; arming a nuclear bomb is fairly complicated and I don't think it comes with a user's manual in Arabic.

Yeah the CIA lies a lot. But does Osama have a habit of lying? You know that Bin Laden admitted he had nuclear, chemical and biological weapons shortly after the 9-11 attacks. And remember the highjackers visited Crop-duster vendors.

Bin laden is wealthy and well connected. They found fairly advanced technical information on nuclear devices in several of the caves they captured in Afghanistan. I doubt those were the only copies.

Their are phyciscsists in nearly every country with the knowhow. Maybe not Afghanistan, but in Pakhistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc..

But there are hundreds of cities in the U.S., there aren't many nuclear devices that can level a whole city. You can't spend your whole life in fear.

If you're going to worry about someone bombing the shit out of your major cities, worry about someone who isn't a fucking straw man. North Korea would be a good start, although even there I'm inclined to believe it nothing but more scaremongering. Frankly, if you've ever worked for the CIA, you don't have much of an interest in the welfare of the individual - in fact, you're probably a lying, cheating, weaseling piece of scrotum.

The US are still the only nation to ever detonate a nuclear warhead in a populated area, and I do not see this changing anytime soon. In fact, I see it as highly likely that if the US ever were to be hit by a nuclear assault, it would be in retaliation. The US is after all, the big bad bully of the "world arena"

I couldn't agree more. Why the fuck do we need to know that Bin Laden has 'religous approval' to detonate a nuclear weapon? Its not as if he'll ever get one. This is just a deliberate ploy to 'remind' the people of 9-11 and the al-Qa'eda 'threat' to maintain support for the war on 'terror.'
I tell you, if you had watched a programme on the Beeb the other week called 'The Power of Nightmares' you wouldn't believe a word any news agency says about terrorism. To cut a long stroy short, the FBI basically paid an Islamic extremist who knew Bin Laden (he was on the run from the guy after stealing money of him) to invent the very existence of al-Qa'eda so that they could prosecute Bin Laden in his absence for the embassy bombings - the very idea that there is an organised network of sleeper cells is rediculous.
They then spoke to a leading expert on nuclear radiation who then destroyed the idea of a dirty bomb actually harming anyone. Apparently the explosion would disperse the little material there is to start off with so finely that it is doubtlful that anyone out of the blast zone of the explosion would actually recieve a dangerous dose of radiation.
Its all just government scare-mongering... <_<
