Anyone like bands such as Element Eight, Deftones, Tool, Children of Bodom and that kind of stuff?
Recently I have started to listen to Chevelle, and wish to further broaden my horizons, anyone got any suggestions?

If you like prog metal, there is nothing better than King Crimson. Red and In the Court of the Crimson King are the best albums.
Try Marillion as well.
Rush and Dream Theater are also considered prog metal, but I'm not quite as familiar with those.
I don't see how goth rock has anything to do with hard rock, prog rock, and metal, however.
For straight up progressive rock, try The Moody Blues for pretty light, but great classic stuff. If you wanna give them a listen, start with Days of Future Passes. Yes did some great really experimental stuff. Close to the Edge and Fragile are the most highly acclaimed albums by Yes. Pink Floyd, of course was the greatest prog band.
For some recent stuff look into The Mars Volta. Their only album, De-loused is very good. Mostly Autumn is more reminiscent of 60s and 70s prog, though. They're pretty good. I have the Last Bright Light by them, and that's a good album.
You should also try Frank Zappa. He's not as "prog" as some of the others, but brilliant in his own way. Hot Rats is considered one of his best albums.
Art rock also refers to nearly the same thing as prog. 10cc is really great, if wanna give art rock a try. The Original Soundtrack is my favorite by 10cc. Television and Pere Ubu are kind of art rock/punk and they're very good. Really experimental.
Hope that helps.

Not much, but i've been listening to a bit of that as well.
As for dream theatre I have all their albums already I think. As I am is one of my favourate songs.
I will try out the other bands you mentioned, of course I love pink Floyd already, though.

Everyone should try listening to Tool. The genre is like a prog mix between Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Rage Against the Machine. Pretty weird genre, but it is the best music I have ever heard. If anyone's interested, the drummer, Danny Carey, is probably the most talented drummer I've ever seen/heard. The lyrics are intelligent, beyond comprehension, almost. :P

Lol, I know that... What I was saying was that it is far from normal metal prog. It is seldom even described as prog, mostly just metal, or alternative rock or something like that.

That's because the term "prog" isn't used very much in the maisntream these days, but Tool is as great an example of metal-prog as I can think of.

Children of Bodom are fuckin awesome. I saw them live a few weeks ago with Fear Factory and Lamb of God, which kicked a lot of ass.
Personally my favorite thrash metal bands would have to be Slayer and Sepultura.
I might be going to see Slayer with Killswitch Engage and Mastadon next month too. :D Slayer has to be one of the best live acts ever.

Thats because most so called "metalheads" dont know anything, most likley they all came for shit-knot or what ever other pop music which gets invited to ozzfest, and when a real rock band goes up they all piss off like the pussies they are.
Most of those prick have probably never heard of any real metal bands, the most metal they have heard is Linkin Park and those sell outs Mettalica.

sad but somewhat true, its quite depressing when your metalheads now are really just 11 year old kids with a title to them or big huge jock frat boys who have bad taste in music
but in my opinion Chevelle does kinda sound pop-ish

Well I'm not in America, and Chevelle unlike Shit-Knot don't get any airtime. I have never heard Chevelle on the radio once.
The only time at rock night down the local rock scene hang out. They never get played where i live, ever. Ohh that and my humble flat in halls.
Anyway you want to talk about pop-rock, you ever heard of a band called Cannibal Corpse? They as I am aware have never seen any airplay yet have sold more records than most of the successful elements of the rock genre combined. I have also seen way more cannibal corpse T-Shirts etc being worn than I have ever seen Chevelle T-shirts, indeed I have yet too see even one Chevelle T-shirt.
So Airplay and rock music don't mean shit.
Pink Floyd had loads of airplay from the likes of Radio one, and had chart topping singles, yet I wouldn't call them a pop band. The same goes for Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, etc.
Anyway I usually take no notice to what people say about bands, I don't care if they are pop or not, as long as they sound good. The only problem is that most pop bands sound shit, and try to emulate other bands, like Mettalica, and fail abismally. That is why I dont like Pop-Rock because it's shit.
However bands like Feeder who are most certainly pop rock have produces the best British rock music for about a decade and a half, and spent most of that decade and a half trying to get where they are today.

Tool rules. If they would get ariplay, (which I don't know if they do in the US. Certainly not here in Norway... :P) the stuff they do is just to deep for any ''burger-masticulating, middle class, suburban, wannahave-angst'' teenagers to like. Because allthough Tools music may be sorta self-destructive, it really isn't agressive, also the lyrics are damn deep. They also often stear away from the traditional 4/4 rythm, which can often make it harder to listen to for a narrow minded idiot who doesn't understand anything about good music. Listen to Tool.

To beging with, Zeppelin, Floyd, and Iron Maiden are all popular music.
And what we're discussing is who pander to radio standards. And in my opinion, Chevelle does.
Zepp, Floyd, and Iron Maiden did not, IMO.
Invader Zim

Indeed, but there is a very large, but subtal difference between a "pop band" and a band which is popular.
And in my opinion, Chevelle does
I respect your opinion more than nearly everyone else on the board, and indeed perhaps it is true to say in the US Chevelle are similar to most pop-rock bands, but I'm not from the US, and where I live I think that the scene is totally different, and that Chevelle are complete nobodies.

Actually, you'd be surprised. This years ozzfest had lots of old school headbangers who showed up, especially since it was the Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Slayer reunion tour. On the second stage they had Shit-knot headline unfortunatley, but hey, right before they came up on stage they had Hatebreed and Lamb of God. I ended up puking in the mosh pit during their set  I think it was because of all the dust that was around plus I had been doing lots of drinking and weed smoking before I went in.
I have yet too see even one Chevelle T-shirt.
I've seen a few of them. Around 2 or 3 I think.
Chevelle is definatley not a metal band though.
Lately a lot of the Ozzfests over the past years have been fairly diverse when it comes to what kind of music the artists play. You get hardcore, nu-metal, cross over, experiemental, etc. bands playing now.

Metallica definatley has lost their soul. I think it was off the new Megadeth album they have a song on their about Lars Ulrich and how Metallica has forgotten where they're from and that they became to rock starish, which they have. Seriously, if Cliff never died they would have never ended up like this. Their first three albums (Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets) are masterpeices. After those, they lost their edge and unfortunatley became more about the money than music.

They started on te indi circuit and out grew other bands in popularity, rather like indi as a genre is becoming more popular. The Smiths were relativly main stream, in that they were popular, but they were still on the Rough Trade label.
Its gone however from what labels, more to sound and image. But yeah its debatable...

Physical Graffiti's CD 1 is almost perfect. If they would have put Ten Years Gone or The Wanton Song instead of Custard Pie and sell it as only 1 CD that would have been their best ever. But CD 2 is a bit weak.
