I though it'd be interesting to see what you folks think on this here subject.
Ya like delta blues or Chicago blues?

I like Latvian blues.

And Jamaican greens as well.

screw you
:P

As much as I love Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton, I had to go with Chicago blues. Muddy Water, Otis Rush, and Magic Sam are the shit.

Has anybody else here heard The Apostles' brilliant "The Progressive Blues Experiment"? Andy Martin's take on "Strange Fruit" isn't as interesting as it could have been, given The Apostles' knack for experimentation, but, there are some other highlights (Esp. "Bull Dyke Woman,") that more than make up for it.

Delta Blues is where it's at! To me that's the original essence of American blues. Whilst Muddy Waters etc. really were/are fantastic musicians and bluesman, to me personally American Blues is really personified in People like Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James etc. They just have that authentic, earthy sound that really makes the blues.

and on the subject of one of my most cherished and inspiring areas of interest. Does anyone here listen to Malian blues, THE ORIGINAL blues? FYI blues is a traditional form of music developed by the Imashagen (sometimes called Touregs, however they find this term derogatory) who live accross much of the Sahara. If you can find any recordings (and they are extremely rare) of Fadel Mohammed al-Husseini or Shabin Mousseir they are Imashagen blues at its best! Ali Farka Toure also does quite well at capturing the original blues essence and has often been compared to the style of John Lee Hooker.

Sweet home Chicago.
So is that Chi-town or the Delta blues?
Because as far as I'm concerned, Robert Johnson wrote Sweet Home Chicago. =D

My apologies senor.

I meant Chicago although Howlin (who is buried in Chicago by the way) is my favorite bluesman.

I don't think it's a matter of who is better becuase both are made up of some of the greatest musicians to make music but more of style and prefrence of whatever gets your head bobbing and feet moving.

Delta all the way. Robert Johnson is my hero.

With the given options I am an undecided voter.
There's a guy I saw at a coffee house once who sang/played the Piedmont Blues, not exactly sure what that is, but it sounded a little more like Chicago than delta to me.

Yeah I know this thread is old, but what the heck. :P

Personally, I prefer Chicago blues; Muddy, Wolf, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells...

Muddy Waters is interesting because he's the link in the chain; old recordings are delta then he kicks it up with urban blues...

But Buddy Guy has gotta be my favorite guitarist, no one can play with as much emotion. That being said, I prefer his old stuff - the stuff with Junior - rather than his latest stuff, which whilst is good, isn't as bad as his old stuff. Buddy's also gotta be the most charismatic blues player too - just a great person. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix4TNJvVk8M) is a mad video clip of him.

Now, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXTJkOwtNuk&feature=related) has gotta be the bluest song ever! At round 1:50, you get that raw Buddy Guy emotion.

Paul Butterfield (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12b-VH1yahE) is great too.

Probably my favorite Delta blues player is Son House. Robert Johnson is a favourite also.

Charley Patton, Memphis Minnie, Bob Cobb, Skip James, and W.C. Handy?!?

Chicago can't even compete!
