Just bought a new copy of Das Kapital, my other is on a train somewhere. And the introduction was written by some cappie bastard who said most of what Marx wrote ( in DK) is now irrelevant because the world is in such a 'good state' now!! WTF!! I couldn't believe it, plus it's been abridged by him so I dare say there will be some vital stuff missing. He dismisses Vol 2&3 as rubbish because it was compiled after Marx's death!
I will have to read it now to find out what's missing, Damn you Amazon.co.uk!!! http://content.funsmileys.com/angry019.gif

Send it back. What are you doing buying it from places like that anyway ? I'll bet you could find a used paperback copy somewhere online for cheap.

I have a copy of State and the Revolution that is like that. The damn introduction is from cappie pig dismissing revolutionary Marxism and is almost as long as the book itself.
After reading it, and laughing through most of it, I did the only sensible thing and tore out the entire introduction. :)

When I read the Communist Manifesto and (tried to read) Das Kapital, both had fairly right-wing introductions, that were really more like commentary on Marx's life.
I find most copies of such material are like this, unless you can find a left-wing book shop, etc.

You hit the jackpot when you find a paperback version of a Marx book from Progress Publishers (the old Russian publishers who would print books in English) or a Peking Foreign Languages book for $0.70 in a bookshop somewhere. The ones with the picture of the author on the 3rd page.
They don't even have an introduction!

I just print most MLM works I read off of the internet and put them in binders. They have the best intros because they are always written by the authors.
From Marx To Mao (http://ptb.lashout.net/marx2mao)
I do own The Marx-Engels Reader, 2nd edition, edited by Robert C. Tucker, and I've only read portions of the intros, which I don't care about. They don't sound right-wing, unless you consider Trotskyism right-wing.
Powells.com is a good left-wing bookstore on the internet, and I believe abebooks.com is as well, even though I've never bought anything from either of those stores.

That really sucks. I'm glad the copy I have is imported from China.
I have a cope of What is to be done? and the intro seemed a little slanted to the right.

Ha ! My 3 volumes of Capital have an introduction by the Belgian Marxist economist Ernest Mandel. I picked mine up second hand, all 3 versions for 10 Australian Dollars. Another book I have by him " The Class Struggles in France 1848 to 1850" was produced in the USSR and has an introduction by Engels. So it looks like you just struck out but your best chance would be to buy second hand or a leftist bookshop

I just stole my Penguin copy of Capital. Fuck off, I'm not paying €35 for it.
You really can't beat the Progress copies of books, it's a shame they're not produced anymore and we're pretty much left with Pathfinder (the SWP's money making scam) and capitalist publications. I usually don't bother reading the introductions unless the book is published by a political party. I know my copy of the Manifesto has an introduction that's 4 times longer than the Manifesto itself.

I also got all 3 copies of Marx & Engels Selected Works (Progress Hardback editions) for CAN$18 last year in Salt Spring Island, B.C. It was a bargain indeed.

That makes me mad. Stop making introductions in books! Its rediculous. I know what I am reading, and if I dont I can just read the book myself. I dont want to know about "Karl Marx's mishapen head" or any other crazy mess they put in these things.

Hmm, so if Marxist book is brought into a public school as an example, I imagine they will teach from the introduction.
The capitalist will sell the rope... This seems like some sort of half-ass propoganda. WHo is going to go to all of the effort to but a leftist book and be thrown off by the introduction?
