Hey all, I've just been getting into a bit of rap lately...namely Public Enemy and trying to get some Run DMC...Can anyone suggest some good rappers/hip-hop-people for me to look for?

Hmmm...

I used to really lbe in to rap, but not so much anymore. But I'll see what I can do.

Nas - Had the classic Illmatic, then went bling, but is pretty good again with Stillmatic, Lost Tapes, and God's Son (obviously a theist here  )

Notorious BIG - Haven't heard alot of him, but he has fucking amazing flow, and that's why is (besides Tupac and Nas... and even Jay-Z) considered the best rapper of all-time. But he is ganngsta

Tupac - Like Biggie I haven't heard too much, but has some real powerful lyrics, but again gangsta (but touted as the best rapper ever)

Jay-Z - bling bling muthafucker, but certainly has ability

KRS-One - Pretty good flow like Biggie I think, has some revolutionary-ish lyrics

Eminem - has ability... and yeah...

Dead Prez - Revolutionary. What more can I say?

Immortal Technique - Only heard that 'Bind Laden' song the other day, and I am hooked! Revolutionary.

Obie Trice - Might be a Eminem lacky in ways like 50 Cent, but really has some ability. His debut album ('Cheers' I think?) is quite good.

Wu-Tang Clan (Ghostface killer being the best MC, and ODB being the funniest) - First album was good. Pretty much forget about them otherwise.

Can't think of much else at the mo. But in regards to female rappers, I think Lauryn Hill is by far the illest! I wsih the Fugees would do another studio album... :(

Wait! [First or second edit]

Grandmaster Flash - I bloody love "The Message", great 'ol school shit

NWA - Straight out of Compton!

Spearhead - Politcal. I saw Michael Franti in concert end of last year.

Roots Manuva - Funny Brit rapper

Rakim - He was fucking great with Eric B, but kinda went shit after that. Great MC.

Talib Kweli - Haven't heard much, but what I've heard is good, and somewhat politically aware

Jurassic 5 - I liked one of their albums (second last one?)

Might add more later.

I'm listening to some 30 second clips of Immortal Technique - Revolutionary volume 2 and its pretty damn good...dunno how my dad'd feel about the song "Obnoxious"'s sexual content...

I'll check out the others later.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cthenthar hit alot of good ones. Some others I'd suggest:

Old School Juice Crew! Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, MC Shan.
Ultramagnetic MCs / Kool Keith
Early stuff by Ras Kass.
Anything by J-Live.
Anything by Gangstarr or produced by DJ Premier.
The first album, One For All by Brand Nubian.
Platform by Dilated Peoples (dont bother with their later stuff, its cack).
If you're looking for leftist stuff, you gotta hear from Looptroop.
Jedi Mind Tricks (their new album is dope, but go back in the catalogue)

Enjoy.

Second Front - Anti-Authoritarian Hip-Hop from Halifax Nova Scotia with an edge that almost makes the experience more akin to Punk.

Non-Prophets - Sage Francais. Duh.

The Roots
I've heard from lots of folks who weren't big on hip hop, but they really liked The Roots.
Talib Kweli is deffinitely good.
Mos Def also comes to mind.
De La Soul pwns, especially if you like The Roots.

Has anybody mentioned Paris yet? I've been listening to Sonic Jihad for the past two days (Along with an unusual ammount of The Apostles . . . different thread.) and it's amazing. Stunning critiques delivered forcefully, and in a way that sticks in yr head.

I'm not a big fan of The Coup, they have some good stuff but I don't think they're very consistant. Lyrically, they're pretty good but musically they're below-par IMO.

Both the Coup and SOAD have albums called Steal this Album. The Coup's came out in 1998, SOAD's came out in 2002. Steal the Double Album is a new version of the Coup's with a bunch of extra shit.

Too bad I've only heard one Coup song so far. :/

Forum Idiot, I too suggest Talib Kweli.
