1) Scottish Republicans Hail Successful Calton Hill Demo
GERRY CAIRNS the National Convener of the Scottish Republican Socialist
Movement has congratulated the organisers of the Calton Hill Declaration
for a Scottish Republic on Saturday October 9th, calling it a “massive step
forward.”
The SRSM joined with the SSP, SNP activists (including the party’s youth
wing Young Scots for Independence) and Ian Hamilton QC amongst many others
for a successful rally which attracted around a thousand people supporting
a declaration “for an independent republic answering only to the people of
Scotland.“
Speaking to the inaugural meeting of the Edinburgh & Lothians Comunn in
Edinburgh on Thursday 14th October, Mr Cairns said “The event at Calton
Hill was a massive step forward for Socialism and Republicanism. We
congratulate the organisers on a magnificent event which we were very
pleased to take part in.”
Local activists heard a short talk from Ard Comhairle member Donald
Anderson about the history of the Scottish Republican Socialist Movement
and agreed to form an Edinburgh & Lothians branch.
Former Press Officer for Midlothian SNP, Joe Middleton, has been appointed
organiser of the new branch. Speaking to the meeting Mr Middleton said “The
SRSM is a cross party organisation. While it is affiliated to the SSP,
which is the only party that shares its vision of a free Scottish Socialist
Republic, we realise that no party has all the political answers.”
“As a current member of the SNP I am pleased to join tonight with activists
from the SSP and the National Republican Covenant in setting up this new
SRSM branch. The success of the Calton Hill declaration teaches us that the
best way to build an independent socialist republic is through the creation
of a broad left movement which can unite all the independence supporting
Scottish parties against the unionist bloc vote.”
“I call on members of all the Scottish parties to consider joining our
movement and working together for a free and independent Scotland.”
Anyone who would like to come to the SRSM’s next meeting should phone Joe
