Here's information on a growing and important development in Latin America:
The Social Charter of the Americas:

Venezuela Prepares Social Charter for the Americas (http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/news.php?newsno=1379)

Social Charter Aimed at Fuller Democracy (http://www.ipsnews.net/africa/interna.asp?idnews=25768)

Social Charter of the Americas-Draft (http://www.venezuela-oas.org/SocialCharteroftheAmericas.htm)

IMO this the new baseline for fighting capitalism in the Americas.

Looks pretty weak and pro forma.

Cooperatives? Probably a big step forward for a few fortunate workers/farmers...but we've had them for more than a century in the U.S. and they never "fought capitalism" in any significant way.

This is actually pro-capitalist...Cuba would be in violation of this clause if this "charter" were adopted.

While the Social Charter, once formally adopted by the OAS, will not be legally binding...

Says it all...another paper declaration of "good intentions".

It is not yet clear exactly what the quantifiable effect of the Social Charter will be.

Waste of trees and paper.

I suspect that most of the people involved in this "effort" are professional reformists. Any parts of this "charter" that ever get implemented should be considered a "full-employment" act for them.
