I've never really been much of a punk person (more of a metal and industrial person), but the genre hardcore really takes my fancy (imagine if it was a woman? ;) )
I've listened to a bit of Refused and Dillinger Escape Plan (who I am told are hardcore).
Anyone got some reccommendations for this genre? Even with the two bands mentioned. Albums and specific songs would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hmmm . . . I'd probably call Dillinger Escape Plan post-hardcore (If I had to even think about them, and under most circumstances, I don't, thankfully) - hardcore, at least in its earliest forms was a stripped down faster/harder subgenre of punk. Wanky crap, a la Dillinger Escape Plan (Did I mention their singer is a homophobic macho fuck?), isn't particularly similar . . . My own judgements aside, I'll try to think of a few less amatuerish bands that you might dig. Personally however, I'll stick to my songs with more passion and meaning than technical ability
Born Against - Nine Patriotic Battle Hymns For Children
The 1991 reissue features "Born Against Are Fucking Dead" which may have inspired a certain Refused song. Slightly metal-edged political hardcore with a sharp lyrical and musical bite, and, sometimes, wicked sense of humour.
The Spectacle (Link) (http://home.no.net/mrdna/thespectacle/)
Situationist-inspired anti-authoritarian metalcore.
Christ On A Crutch - Crime Pays When Pigs Die
Mid-tempo, mean-spirited, anti-authoritarian hardcore. Poorly shouted vocals and occasional bits of limted singing give me hope that one day, I could front a hardcore band.
Leftover Crack - Mediocre Generica
While the Crack Rock Steady Beat isn't hardcore, the perverse mix of metal, hardcore, and SKA might appeal to you. If nothing else, their toying with themes of satanism, violence, school shootings, and substance abuse to deliver their atheist/autonomist message is fascinating, and worth a listen.
If you use SoulSeek my user name is VirginMolotov - you should be able to find the three albums I mentioned above as well as some great anarchist pop-punk that you'd probably hate. :P

I must admit, I don't actually like Dillinger Escape Plan, as they just seem to be all over the place (didn't know anything about their politics).
I was just name dropping (except Refused, who are awesome)

Just did some research and found that the Refused singer is now in The (International) Noise Conspiracy.
Are they any good? I downloaded some mp3s, but haven't heard them yet.

I really like T(I)NC's older material (The 7"s collected on The First Conspiracy) - it's driving, hook laden rock and roll with some edge and some meaning. Their later material, however, is a real bore. Cliched experimentation, etc.
Refused love Randy
Randy love Refused
(I prefer Randy, but I'm a sucker for popmusic.)
Get SoulSeek, *****.

I saw them last night. See my birthday thread in chit chat. They were great. :)
I really like hardcore, but I'm really confused by what is considered as hardcore. I looked at wikipedia and I couldn't understand stuff like Dead Kennedys being in that genre. I also didn't realise 'til last night that hardcore could be so very close to metal (at least shouting/screaming-wise).

hmmm well metallic hardcore can be close, but people get orthodox about 'hardcore'
The Garbage Disposal Unit

People get uptight about some of the silliest constructs.
Punk? Hardcore? Metal? The lines are arbitrary! A band falls within whatever genre people says it does - that is, genres are defined by common points within the genre, and bands are defined by the genres with . . . damn, my brain has decided to walk away at this point.
Anywhom, I'm sure you see what I'm getting at.
In terms of the silly hardcore narrative - the little social fiction we've built up around it . . .
Hardcore in the "purist" (HA!) sense refers to the style that primarily sprang up on the two coasts of the US (Washington D.C. and LA being the main centres) of bands that played a stripped down harder/faster/shorter brand of punk. Minor Threat, Government Issue, and all of the early Dischord bands are a pretty good example of what was going on in D.C. and The Circle Jerks, Bad Religion, etc. are reasonable examples of the L.A. sound.
The Dead Kennedys, Feederz, and other bands are often lumped in with hardcore because of a similar DIY approach, a more visceral power than some of the other "punk" bands at the time, which were just sub-par pop groups with stupid hair.
The "evolution" of hardcore (I hate when art is treated like this. Really. Have I mentioned in the last ten minutes how badly I want to destroy "art" as this alienable commodity that . . . *grumble*) went in a lot of different directions - a lot of the bands in DC started doing the whole emo/posthardcore thing (Heck, just look at the evolution of Dischord Records) and a whole macho/sXe/youth-crew thing began to spring up (esp. in New York/Boston) and on the West Coast, there was a lot of . . . stuff . . . uh . . . fuck, maybe I should try writing this again some other time.

Suicidal Tendencies, Agnostic Front, Strife, Earth Crisis and Hoods are a few good ones.
As for "metalcore", Lamb of God and Unearth would be good ones.

alright this is where i put my nose in lol
first of all, The Dillinger Escape Plan is hardcore-influenced grindcore, they are predominantly grind and math metal, just as The Red Chord are, and the Locust are.
this is gonna be a long fucking response so hold on to your seats ladies and gentleman
im gonna review almost every grindcore, hardcore, metalcore band i listen to and have seen in show, in alphabetical order, im gonna rate them too
:D
NOTE ALL BANDS IN MY LOCAL AREA(Long Island Hardcore) WILL BE CAPITALIZED
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7 Angels 7 Plagues - quite possibly one of the most amazing metalcore bands ever to be around, they paved the way for modern metalcore, and they broke up to form Misery Signals. Best song of theirs is definetly Commentator's Despair. 9 Stars.
A Life Once Lost - possibly the most blatant ripoff of Meshuggah I have ever heard. The singer has the most annoying, nasty gut wrenching scream, its absolutely terrible. Best song of theirs? Cavil. Although it might as well be played by Meshuggah. 3 Stars.
A Perfect Murder - from Quebec, APM is a blend of new metalcore with predominant oldschool undertones. Possessed is their best song to me, and they clearly have Metallica and Megadeth influences. 7 Stars.
A Static Lullaby - a very good melodic hardcore aka emocore band. i know it sounds stupid but their songs take you on an emotional rollecoaster and their songs have a poppy liking to them, very catchy. Best song is Lipgloss And Letdown. 8 Stars.
A Taste For Murder - very bland, very generic, reminds me alot of Dead To Fall. MAJOR lack of bass. Best song would be Life On My Terms. 5 Stars.
Across Five Aprils - Static Lullaby esque melodic hardcore. Extremely emotional, very intricate, nothing special though. Best song is Helpless Dreams Of An Assassin. 7 Stars.
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Nasty, choppy, disgusting cybergrind. 100000bpm drum machines, 30 second songs, this is grindcore at its best. Spreading the Dis-ease is their best song. 9 Stars.
Alexisonfire - AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING melodic hardcore from Canada, some of the best shit ive ever heard. Best song is 44. Caliber Love Letter, listen to it and prepare to be amazed, its great. A genuine mix of soft emo and metalcore, very in detail. 10 Stars.
ALOVE FOR ENEMIES - alright, these guys are local to me, and VERY VERY CHRISTIAN, BUT absolutely brutal, theyve mastered the breakdown and do not force their beliefs upon others. Best song is Broken Pledge. 7 Stars.
Anam Cara - generic, boring, blah blah just bad metalcore. best song is Words Cut Through. Dont bother. 2 Stars.
ANOTHER DAY - more hardcore from my home. Extremely metal, extremely oldschool, they word everything in, and if you love to two step, theyre for you. Aucun Demain is their best song. 7 Stars.
ANTERRABAE - one of my favorite local bands, Anterrabae is a two steppers dream, and not to mention their breakdowns own all. How Joey Got His Groove Back is their best. 9 Stars.
As I Lay Dying - these guys are metal as all fuck, and currently the epitome of metalcore. 94 Hours is their best song, and has the fastest double bass ever recorded. listen to it, its ok. 7 Stars.
Atreyu - ABSOLUTE SHIT, if I had to name a best song, it would be Deanne The Arsonist but its still crap. 2 Stars.
Bane- oldschool, oldschool and more oldschool. Even though the singers voice is very dominant and kind of raspy and just... bad, theyre very invigorating and makes you feel good, TWO STEP! Best song is Can We Start Again. 8 Stars.
BELAKISS - Long Island Hardcore that is verrry reminiscent of Fall Of Icarus, very good band though, best showmanship ive ever seen. Best song is You Mistook Me For A Suicide King, best pileup part ever. 8 Stars.
Beloved - these guys cant decide whether they are hardcore, metal, emo, indie, or whatever and its a big turnoff, they need to make up their minds. Their best song is The Aftermath. 4 Stars.
Between The Buried And Me - these guys make some beautiful music, extremel heavy and almost grindy at times to smooth and melodic, but pale in comparison to The Judas Cradle. Best song is The Use Of A Weapon. 7 Stars.
Bleeding Through - people love em, I hate em, theyre made up of former members of bands like Eighteen Visions, and extremely metal. Best song is On Wings Of Lead. 5 Stars.
Blessed Is She - wow metal, these guys arent big at all, but they pack a fucking punch, some of the heaviest and brutal shit ive ever heard, or danced to. Best song is Pull It Back. 9 Stars.
Bloodjinn - old, and rather generic metalcore, they died off a while ago, but are still a good listen. Best song is Seconds. 6 Stars.
Boy Sets Fire - modern hardcore in its early stages, very very good, and two stepping is a must. After The Eulogy is their best. 7 Stars.
Boys Night Out - lots of people hate them but they are actually very very good. emocore/melodic hardcore, whichever you prefer is the dominating undertone, but is glazed over with a layer of pop punk. Very good stuff from Canada. I Got Punched In The Nose For Sticking My Face In Other People's Business is their best. 8 Stars.
Brother's Keeper - broke up a while ago. Old school punk with a touch of hardcore. Not too much of a good thing, and ure not missing much. But its okay if u dont wanna go to work, which seems to be what every song of theirs is about. Best song is 2 Weeks Notice. 5 Stars.
Bury Your Dead - grindy metalcore. VERY heavy and if you go to one of their shows, you WILL get hurt. ANGRY ANGRY music, and I love every second of it. Best song is 69 Times A Charm. 8 Stars.
Casey Jones - oldschool, and straightedge, the most straightedge band ever. Very militant in their views and very oldschool. Best song is Another Day In The FLA. 5 Stars.
Circle Takes The Square - every song of theirs tells a story and its very entertaining to listen to, not the best musicianship or vocals, but the stories they tell are amazing. Best song is Interview At The Ruins.
Closed Casket Diary - I LOVE IT! This is absolutely some of the best metalcore Ive ever heard, the breakdowns, the two steps, the horrorchords, i love it all. Big JC Isn't For Me is their best song definetly, a must listen, you gotta. 10 Stars.
Comeback Kid - oldschool hardcore to the max, I usually dont like oldschool but CC tickles my fancy just right. Die Tonight is their best song, and even if you arent at their show youll feel the need to dance. 9 Stars.
Dead Elizabeth - along with Closed Casket Diary, some of the best Ive ever heard in my life. Its just so well put together and progressive for the genre, its amazing, truly is. The Pleasures Of Antiquity is their best song. 10 Stars.
Dead To Fall - the breakdown masters. Slow slow slow metalcore, but extremely heavy. The lyrics are very oriented in darkness and hell and such. Eternal Gates Of Hell is their best. AND THEN I SAW THE BLOOD! 8 Stars.
Ed Gein - Grindcore with a hardcore coating. These guys are complicated, fancy, dirty, everything rolled into one, and one of my favorite bands, they deserve everyones ears, so lend one. A Way To Kill Old People is their best song. 10 Stars.
Eighteen Visions - ok people, there are two Eighteens Visions, old and new. Old Eighteen Visions was heavy, fast, loud and violent. New Eighteen Visions is crap, utter crap, dont give it the time of day. Motionless And White is their best song. Old Eighteen Visions gets 8 stars, new Eighteen Visions gets 1 star.
Evergreen Terrace - although they did a very good cover of U2's Sunday Blood Sunday, these guys suck, very generic and boring and annoying. Their best song is Dear Live Journal. 4 Stars.
FROM THE PAWN - more LI hardcore, and this time they suck, really bad. These guys play metalcore with a pussy covering and its disgusting, they should be ashamed to be from LI. Their best song is Portraits Of Us. 3 Stars.
Glass Casket - wow I love these guys so much. More grindcore with a hardcore tint. Pencil Lead Syringe is their best song, and one of my favorite songs. Deep, heavy, intricate, and the singers screams is one of the best. 9 Stars.
Glassjaw - punky, oldschool, poppy crap, dont bother because theyll waste your time. Best song is Stuck Pig. But dont bother. 2 Stars.
Hatebreed - RACIST, white supremacist, oldschool hardcore with a metal lining, first hardcore band to ever hit the mainstream, and who knew they would with a song called Kill The Niggers? Theyre a bunch of bastards, and their best song is I Will Be Heard, their big hit back in the day, whenever that day was when racism became popular again. 4 Stars.
Hawthorne Heights - another generic melodic hardcore band who throws a pinch of emo into the mix and thinks that they are Taking Back Sunday. Bad bad bad, their showmanship is outshined by a fucking boulder. Their best is Ohio Is For Lovers. 3 Stars.
Highwater Waltz - borderlining metal and grindcore, these guys really catch some major attention, and their best song, Real Gangstas Don't Use Condoms shows it. Check it out, its worth it. 7 Stars.
Hopesfall - melodic hardcore at its absolute best there is. And Hopesfall, along with Belakiss is the best live band you could ever ask for in their life. It turns some people off that most of their songs have an 'epic' feel to them, but thats jsut makes them better for me. Absolutely check them out you wont be disappointed. 10 Stars.
HORSE The Band - these guys are a JOKE, but a damn good one, who knew a fucking Casio keyboard could rock so hard  Cutsman is their best song. They are amusing, funny, dancable, and make some insane breakdowns. The keyboard brings it on home. 8 Stars.
It Dies Today - might as well be named It Craps Today because these guys are shit. You need to listen to find out why. If they had a best song it would be A Romance By The Wings Of Icarus. 2 Stars.
JULIESQUE - very popular on the Long Island scene, they have some great breakdowns, catchy riffs, and youll find yourself playing alot of air guitar to them. Their best song is American Cinema. 7 Stars.
Martyr AD - these guys are heavy as all hell. Anti-christ, hell ridden disgusting metalcore that people get fucked up to. American Hollow is their best song. And some fucking fast ass double bass. 7 Stars.
Misery Signals - when 7 Angels 7 Plagues broke up, they broke up a masterpiece, but only to form another masterpiece, Misery Signals. This band is one of the best out there now in the metalcore scene and always take the cake at shows. Their songs are incredibly cinematic and deep, trodden with religious and moral undertones, but dont let that stray you away from them, because this is the realy fucking deal, and its like sex for your ears. The Year Summer Ended In June is their absolute best, get it. 10 Stars.
Most Precious Blood - NYC natives and self proclaimed 'Gotham City Hardcore'. Borderlining oldschool hardcore with new metalcore, MPB throws it all into the mix and spits it out as brutal, heavy, danceable NYC branded hardcore. Their best song is The Great Red Shift. 7 Stars.
Nebraska Arm Your Children - these guys are one of my favorite bands, with a very humorous approach to their music, poking fun at their home state of Nebraska, with cowboy ridden lyrics. Their musicianship is very oldschool oriented, but carried out in a metal fashion. I like to call it Cowboycore sometimes  Their best song is Cowboys Never Die. 10 Stars.
Nehemiah - Christian metalcore, need I say more? Theyre nothing really special, their showmanship is amazing, but their music itself leaves alot to be desired. The Asphyxiation Process is their best song. 6 Stars.
Nodes Of Ranvier - One Christian hardcore band I love to love. Original, heavy, distorted, choppy, transitional, and I love it all. A Life Wasted Sleeping is their best song. A must for all. 9 Stars.
Nora - the best way to describe these guys is metal oldschool, and made up of very old men  Theyre nothing special and extremely simple for my tastes. Their best song is I Should Have Sent Flowers. 6 Stars.
Norma Jean - HEAVY, and these guys make some masterpieces of songs, one of my favorite bands. Also their breakdowns are to die for, and their songs are LOONGGGGG. Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste is their best. 10 Stars. oh and theyre Christian. They used to be known as Luti-kriss.
On Broken Wings - people like to call OBW the masters of all breakdowns, and it would be true if it werent for The Bled and Norma Jean. I Do My Crosswords In Pen is their best song out there, with a pileup part thats too good to be true. HEARTLESS!! 8 Stars.
Poison The Well - this is the band that has had the most profound effect on hardcore, metalcore, and melodic hardcore to date. Theyre an amazing band with very in depth songs about love and heartbreak, but very heavy and beautiful. Parks And What You Meant To Me is their best. 9 Stars.
Premonitions Of War - GRIND TIL YOU CANT GRIND NO MO! with a hint of metal of course. These guys are the heaviest band Ive ever heard in my life, and they better keep it that way or Ill be very disappointed. They are definetly a must listen, especially if you like it heavy. Citizen is their best. 10 stars.
Remembering Never - or as we from Long Island like to say, Rembembering Fucking Never! These guys are absolutely amazing, their songs are a journey through life and loss and love and everything imaginable. Metalcore at its finest. I WALK THE LINE! A Clearer Sky is their best song. 9 Stars.
Shai Hulud - oldschool with metal riffs, its been done. Their best is Profound Hatred Of Man. 3 Stars.
Sinai Beach - More Christian metalcore, and this time its violent, heavy and nasty. With blast breakdowns and ascending and descending guitar and bass lines, they will definetly catch your ear. Wolves In Sheeps Clothing is their best. 9 Stars.
STRADLATTER - very oldschool Long Island hardcore, very danceable and fun, but theyre nothing too serious, but fun all together. Their best song is From The Balcony. 7 Stars.
STRAY FROM THE PATH - the ABSOLUTE favorite amongst the Long Island scene. These guys have been described as Circuscore and their songs are like taking a metalcore romp through KISS's Pshyco Circus. Their best song is Solace, their epic. 9 Stars.
Symphony In Peril - stop and go metalcore, these guys do not like constant songs, and that is what I love about them. Lament is their best song. They also have many grind bridges. 10 Stars.
TELL IT TO THE JUDGE - my friend Tim's band which was very big in the local scene. They took on a court style approach and they did it so well it made you feel guilty to be alive. OLDSCHOOL TO THE MAX. Their best song is Taking The World Back. 7 Stars
Terror - one word describes Terror, and that would be DANGEROUS. Their shows are the most dangerous, brutal, bloody messes you have ever seen in your life, and its good fun, but what isnt fun is their music because they suck, really bad. Oldschool isnt their bag, they need to give up. Spit My Rage would be their best. 2 Stars.
The Black Dahlia Murder - these guys are total Death Metalcore, dark and necro and heavy and fast and everything that comes with the package. Closed Casket Requiem is their best song. 8 Stars.
The Bled - ok no band and no one could ever produce better breakdowns than The Bled does, and their breakdowns are heavy and violent. One of my favorite bands. Red Wedding is their best song. GET ON YOUR KNEES AND BEG FOR LIFE!! 10 Stars.
THE CONCUBINE - local Long Island band that is very grind oriented, they can be called rythym grind metal if that makes sense to you, VERY HEAVY and stinging guitars dominate their songs. The Human Highlight Reel is their best song. 7 Stars.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - my favorite band hands down. Math metal and grindcore played with an extreme hardcore attitude. Their album Calculating Infinity will and already has gone down as a MASTERPIECE, in every sense of the word. 43% Burnt and Panasonic Youth are tied for their best songs. Their songs are extremely complicated, they take alot of thinking to listen to, and their music is pure mathematical gold. A MUST! 10 Stars.
The Judas Cradle - their one word description would have to be desolate. The Judas Cradle's songs make you feel as though your life is about to end at any second, and there is nothing you can do about it but take others with you. Metalcore that will make you wish you were a mass murderer. Their best song is The Convenience Of A Disposable Hero. 10 Stars.
The Locust - blast grindcore with a hardcore attitude. They ever throw in a little cyber techno mix into their songs for a jolly good time  Theyre a good entertaining listen. Their best song is Twenty-three Full Time Cowboys. 7 Stars.
The Red Chord - more hardcore covered grindcore. As Dillinger, The Red Chord is very complicated and mathematical, but ridiculously heavy at the same time, give them a listen theyre amazing. Their best is Dreaming In Dog Years. 10 Stars.
THE RESCUE - a melodic hardcore band from the Long Island scene. They were just signed to United Edge Records in Canada. Their songs are emotional and heavy and melodic, and always have to do with lost love and broken hearts, but they make it attractive. Their best song is Jackie O. Destroyed The Modern Day Romance. 8 Stars.
This Escape - clean, emo esque, rather pretty metalcore, and I know its a weird mix but its worth a try, so give it a try. Their best song is Satisfaction Arson. 7 Stars.
THIS YEAR'S ADDICTION - a local Long Island band, with a girl lead singer who has the most range of scream I have ever heard in my life, and every bit of it sounds amazing. Melodic hardcore. The bass in this band stands out alot and their songs remind me of Hopesfall, in their epic approach. Their best song is One Day Older, One Day Closer. 8 Stars.
Through The Eyes Of The Dead - heavy, stop and go metalcore, that will leave you wanting more. Its like an ascent into hell, and Eddie Van Halen is at your side the entire time  Their best is To Take Comfort. 9 Stars.
Throwdown - Positive hardcore, aka Posicore or Tough Guy Hardcore. Throwdown is also a big straightedge band, but not as much so as Casey Jones. This is fighting music right here. Forever is their best song, and the will definetly make you wanna fuck someone up. 8 Stars.
Uncle Bob Drives A Combine - Cybergrind, utilizing a drum machine with BPM you couldnt even image. I love this stuff, and this grind is brutal and nasty, keep those blast beats coming! Their best song is Scene 2 - Kim Discovers His Spirit Guide. 9 Stars.
Unearth - The be all, end all of metalcore bands, with dynamic breakdowns and almost seizuring guitars. Endless is their best song and has one of the best breakdowns around, the first breakdown in the song. Dont miss these guys they are amazing. 9 Stars.
Until The End - Tough, tough, tough, and metalcore. Until The End music that you headhunt to at shows, and no one leaves unscathed. Let The World Burn is their best song. 7 Stars.
Where Fear And Weapons Meet - these guys are tough oldschool, REALLY tough. Thug squad loves WFAWM shows, and you better watch your head at one of their shows, because if you dont, youre bound to lose it, and fast. Other Face is their best song. WHATS YOUR FUCKING WORTH!? 8 Stars.

4 Stars.
The only reason why people started making assumptions that Hatebreed is a racist band was because some nazi stabbed and killed a guy at one of their shows back in the day, so this eventually led people to start thinking they're nazis. Also the fact that someone changed the name of one of their songs to "Kill The N******" on Kazaa sure didn't help much at all either.
Hatebreed is not racist. Never has been and never will be. I mean c'mon, how the hell can they be nazis if they used to open up for bands like Earth Crisis and Agnostic Front, who are SHARPs (AF). Also, they have been known to work with ARA (Anti-Racist Action).
But seriously, do more research on something instead of going on second hand information and making assumptions. <_<

I think he's on a break from che-lives, there were issues with many members holding patricentric views, I suppose it was a case of a straw that broke the camels back. He'd be back in a second if he knew there was a hardcore thread.

He'd approve of Dillinger Escape Plan, I know that much, but I don't think he likes Norma Jean. Oh and he loves Comback Kid (well mostly, apparently the last show of theirs he went to was pretty disappointing). And if I've got any of that wrong he'll get pissed at me, oh well.
What about Converge? No-one's mentioned them.
And if you're in the UK check out November Coming Fire (the band, not the Samhain album) cos they're pretty cool. Their MCD's called Black Ballads and they've got a full length coming out some time I think.
I'm not very good on hardcore I'm afraid, but that's my two pennyworth.

That dosen't really mean anything. In the 80's bands like Agnostic Front, Reagan Youth and Gorilla Biscuits had no problem playing with bands like Youth Defense League and No Alibi. Still Ive never actually seen proof that Hatebreed were nazis and I know Jamey Jasta was good friends with Boston Mike (the big black dude from Skarhead) and made a dedication to him when he died. The band does suck balls but Jamey's an allright guy.

Sorry, did Reagan Youth actually play with Youth Defense League? That would seems maaaaad out of character.

On a slightly off-topic note, Dillinger Four are fucking amazing, though decidedly not hardcore. "Mixing pop and politics, he asks me what the use is, I'm not into making excuses, and I'll die the day I find I'm fucking useless . . ."

RAMBO may be the best (At least funniest) political hardcore band ever. Songs like "Rock Out With Your Black Bloc Out" and "Rockin' With Kropotkin" are fucking crucial.

Virgin Moltov Cocktail knows his shit. Though I think the Messiah needs to be crucified again. You've got to be confusing the fuck out of this guy. Reccomending 100 fairly obscure bands in every genre from Emo to Indie to Metal to Punk does not help him. No offense JC, I still wub you  But C'mon, the Locusts ? Are you fucking joking ?
Judging by Ctenthar's musical tastes, the bands he mentioned and the way he phrased it, it looks like he's talking about "Metalcore", which is pretty far removed from classic hardcore (like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Adolescents). Like VMC by the way, I think it sucks to have to pigeonhole artforms like this, but it's relevant to the discussion. Anyway. If I'm feeling him right, Ctenthar is looking for bands that are more on the metal side.
I can pretty much guarantee that you'll like Avenged Sevenfold. Go download some of their stuff right now, you seem to like that gnarly screaming metal shit. I liked them when I first heard them, and I like alot of their music still, but I hate the cheesy fucking gimmicks these bands use. You shouldn't need eye shadow to sell records. But yeah, check them out.
If you like Refused try Rise Against, they're a little more on the punk side. But I think they're a perfect example of genuine, straight up hardcore. Not metalcore, emocore, grindcore or any other odd distortion of hardcore. Just regular harcore (sometimes referred to as punk rock).
Edit: And yes mentalbunny, Converge is sweet.
Also, Jamie Jasta is an MTV2 VJ douche bag.

Since when are punk and hardcore the same thing?

You're on point UR. I'm more of a metal person, but I wanna check out some punk-type stuff, but obviously metal-ish punk is my best bet.
Since you recommned to ignore Jesus (as I always do), I will check out some of the stuff you said now.
Thanks man. :)

To be fair, UR did say sometimes, and hence it doesn't necessitate that he believes they are the same.

They're both closely related. Hardcore punk music has been around longer than hardcore itself. Most hardcore music tends to be heavily influenced by old school hardcore punk and some have a lot of metal influences. Now days hardcore music tends to be very diverse. People experiment with different sounds and what not. I dunno. It seems like everyone has their own definition of what it is.
I first got into hardcore about 8 years ago or so. Earth Crisis as well as many of the other bands I mentioned were the bands who got me turned on to the genre.
Earth Crisis has some really good stuff out. I would highly recommend them to anyone that's into hardcore. Petey mentioned some of there stuff.
thanx R_R, see hatebreed aint at all rascist
Yeah man, no problem. What I thought was funny is how he said that about them and yet a lot of those bands he mentioned were influenced by them or had some kind of help getting exposure thanks to them.
Other than the fact Jamey Jasta is hosting that show on MTV2, Hatebreed is a great band. I've seen them live 5 times. I still think "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire" is the best album. "Under the Knife" was great, but the sound quality could have been better.
agnostic front-get their album "something's gotta give"
Hatebreed- check out their album under the knife
New Society Of Anarchists- go to the N.S.O.A. website and get all three of the albums still in print because brew city hardcore ROCKS! BxCxHxCx
Earth Crisis- "firestorm" is totaly FUCKING awsome shit
strife-There album "one truth" is insane and those fuckers rock
For Agnostic Front, some other good albums are "United Blood", "Victim in Pain", "Cause For Alarm", "Liberty and Justice", "One Voice", "Riot, Riot Upstart", "Dead Yuppies", etc. Classic New York City Hardcore. :D
"One Truth" by Strife is great. "In This Defiance" is also awesome.
"Firestorm" has to be Earth Crisis's best album. Along with that one I would have to say "Last of the Sane", "Breed the Killers" and "Gemorahs Seasons End" are good.
Sick of it All is another good hardcore band. They're albums "Blood, Sweat and No Tears" is a classic. "Just Look Around" is another really good one"

Ian Appreciation Post!!!!!!:
I saw Most Precious Blood (metalcore without bullshit gimmicks a la Avenged Sevenfold), Taking Sides (Local is where it's at), Shotpointblank (a top band from South Australia. What is it about A-town?), and Degeneracy (a hills grindcore band from my hood with delightful songs such as **** Maggot, Cum Bucket, Right Hand=Abortion Machine, as well as the ever so hard hitting, David Jone's Changeroom Defacation).
My actions rated a mention in the MPB journal "anyway, sydney was a lot of fun. the all ages show at the back door i think was the best of the 2 shows though. kids were pulling down the barrier at the end going nuts." I did the barrier job. Plus a mic-grab which I later worked out to be 29 seconds during The Great Red Shift.

Okay... I know what hard core is and what punk is.
I'm just saying that you cannot say "punk" when you're specifically talking about hardcore. Even though hardcore is a type of punk, it just doesn't make sense. It's like saying that bop is sometimes referred to as jazz. Of course it's jazz. But it's not the same thing.

Victor. What I'm saying is, all of these "screamo" and "metalcore" bands that basically play speed up metal with a guy alternating between growling and soft singing have no relation to hardcore in the classic sense.
The original hardcore bands like Minor Thread, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Adolescents, Youth Brigade, and countless had alot more in common with straight up punk rock. Hardcore was basically just the punk movement that was getting started in America as the English thing was kind of slowing down. It's just American punk really.
What I'm trying to say is: Metal isn't hardcore. Guys growling to drop D guitars with wailing solos in every song while wearing makeup and nylons has nothing to do with punk or hardcore.

Just thought I'd list a couple good metal songs with Anti-American/Capitalist lyrics.
- Stuck Mojo - Uncle Sam Sham (Kind of a Metal-Rap)
- Exodus --> Scar Spangled Banner
- Hades --> The Decline and Fall of the American Empire
- KMFDM --> WWIII
My favourite metal band is System of a Down. All their songs are somewhat political. However, I don't know if I'd call them metal, there's something of a mix  .

KMFDM are industrial, maybe touching on industrial metal.
System of a Down are alternative metal. I have heard some where that they consider themselves as hardcore?

I've never really been much of a punk person (more of a metal and industrial person), but the genre hardcore really takes my fancy (imagine if it was a woman? ;) )
I've listened to a bit of Refused and Dillinger Escape Plan (who I am told are hardcore).
Anyone got some reccommendations for this genre? Even with the two bands mentioned. Albums and specific songs would be greatly appreciated. :)
God please people, the classics:
Hardcore came of age in NYC in the 80's DC and Philly had a say as did California, but it remained more punk.
NYC really started it with people like Vinnie Stigma, of Agnostic Front, later Rodger too mentioned below, JOhn and Harley Flanegan of the Cromags, Raybies of Warzone, Rat Charlie of Ultraviolence, Davie of Mental Abuse, HR of Badbrains (and John Joseph)
and Billy Psycho of the Psychos, Reagan's Youth (fuck a must see and hear very pro-Marxist lyrics),
Then the out of towners:
Government Issue(DC), the Plazmatics (shout out for Wendy O Rest in Peace, Richie Stotts the bassist was incredible coming from a Jazz background
check "across the valley of '84) Minor Threat DC too.
FEAR (Texas),
THen the Cali bands:
DI (Drunken Imbeciles),
DRI,
Circle Jerks
the MEat MEn, and even FLipper, THrowing Muses, Laughing Hyenas, and DK took Punk rock to a new age a created HARDCORE.
Later groups like Sick of it All, Crippled Youth (which became BOLD-- little guy singing was freaking amazing) Trip 6, Youth of Today, JFA (Jodi Foster's Army), and Gorilla Bisquits. Canada got into the action with the Day Glo Abortions
Some English Bands of note which influenced this sound from the 70's were: The Exploited, GBH, The English Dogs, the always underestimated due to a female singer but they kicked ass: X-Ray Specs, CRASS, the Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols always an influence.
Originally much of the music was controlled by Chris Williamson, but eventually through the success of the Beasties, Murphy's Law, Bad Religion, and Bad Brains, dropping shows and cash, and the Straight Edge bands like Fugazi (guys from Minor Threat)
coming out of DC opened it up for new bands in NYC.
Anyhoo that's the begining of what became NYHC please check the classics before the new crap that's coming out today.
Roger Miret of Agnostic Front tried to put out a new album called Kill the Yuppies, and the supposedly "punk rock" label putting out the crap you guys mentioned earlier wouldn't carry it, so that should tell ya a lot![article in Su Girls]

Pandora you are mixing a lot of punk in with your hardcore suggestions but overall your suggestions are very good. I don't know what passes for hardcore these days but is still think of many of the old NY, DC bands when I think of hardcore. I used to actually like it then.

I hate labels. People consider themselves something, then other people place them somewhere else. As I said in another thread, I honestly haven't heard enough KMFDM to really know their style. Only a 4-5 songs.
I consider them crap.
Ouch. That hurts. You're entitled to your dislikes however. I try to like all music except pop. Can't stand the reasoning behind that. Basically just good-looking people trying to make quick sales, make their money, then fade out with their fortunes. Sometimes the try to make a comeback (Justin Timberlake is still trying; I don't know how successfully). It's all capitalism at it's worst.
