I will share my knowledge on the branches in britain and other places.

The huge majority of marxists regard themselves as Marxist Leninists. Form this stand point the major split was traditionally the communists and the trostskyists. The communists traditionally aligned with the soviet union, whiile the trotskyists believed that there was no real workers state that existed anywhere. Furthermore,, trotskyists argued, that contrary to what stalin said, socialism was nt possible in one country.

However in both these camps there were a number of different factions. In the communist camp people split into the "tankies' (a derogatory phrase) meaning the hardliners who supported sending the tanks into Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The euro-communists were less hardline but at the same time switched to promoting socialism through the ballot box and becoming more reformist.

In Latin America, from what I know, (correct me If i am wrong), the split was traditionally between those marxists who believed in a mass urban auprising, and those who i think were more inclined towards, who believed in rural insurrection

There have also been a number of non-leninist marxist groups. I personally align myself to an extent with the Bund who saw Lenin as slightly elitist and undemocratic and disagreed with his very terrritorial solutions for ethnic minorities. Although that is not to say I do not admire lenin for some of his actions

Hope this was informative,

Reuben

all of these types of socialism and only a few (if that) capitalist and facist types. How are we ever going to create a socialist world if we can't get agree on a type of socialism?

leninists also differ from maoists in that they think that they should teach the peasants, while maoists belive that they already have the revolutionary instincts and they (the peasants) should teach others.

you should get a political dictionary which explains about every kind in short, and also tells you all the branches in a single place, so you won't have to look around too much.

No, that's not true. Here are the most important differences:
1. Marxism is on the left side of the political spectrum, fascism is on the ultra-right;
2. Marxism supports internationalism among working class, fascism supports nationalistic feeling of the definite nation or race;
3. Marxism is based on peace :when the socialism is established in the concrete state, this state leans toward peaceful international politic. In contrary, fascism always chooses violent ways and is characterized by the aggresive , war like behaviour.
4. Marxism aims to destroy the exploitig classes of the society, fascism supports capitalist monopoly.

Many fascists of the beginning of the 20th century were hiding under the name "socialist" - Hitler's example. So, they would be able to enter the office with the help of the workers and then to implement the nationalistic fascism politics.

Sypher you said that" We have to agree on a type of socialism".
I think it is not right... Socialist idea is very fluid and it can be interpreted in many ways. And in it is interperted as present circumstances in diferent states are.
It would be stupid from Mao if he excepted revolutionary movement to be formed in urban areas when mostly workers live.
Very small percent of 1930 China lived in cities, so he turned to peasants. And revolution succeded..

We have to agree on the fundamental theory. It's about ruling the state, not how to come to the power.
