PM: Were monitoring Myanmar situation
JAKARTA: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he has no idea if the detention of Myanmar Prime Minister Gen Khin Nyunt will affect the democratic process in the country.
It would be a cause of concern if it did, he said when asked about the sacking and arrest of Khin Nyunt, who was replaced by a top member of the country's ruling junta, Lt-Gen Soe Win.
All that we hope is to see that the scheduled development of the roadmap to democracy, which Myanmar had explained to us and other Asean partners, will be carried out and not adversely affected, Abdullah said.
The Prime Minister added that Malaysia had yet to get the real picture of the arrest, as the information coming out from Myanmar could not be regarded as accurate.
We are monitoring (the situation) very closely and I don't want to add to the speculation, he said, adding that the nearest opportunity to get a direct explanation from Myanmar on the issue would be at the Asean summit in Laos in November.
In Kuala Lumpur, United Nations envoy to Myanmar Tan Sri Razali Ismail said Khin Nyunt's exit was a big surprise for everybody.
I am sorry he is no longer there, Razali said, adding that he was rowing in a perahu through a forest in Perak when Khin Nyunt was ousted and put under house arrest.
I came out only this afternoon and found my handphone jammed with SMS messages about the exit of Khin Nyunt, he told Bernama an hour after he emerged from the forest.
However, he added that the UN could move forward despite this.
Asked about the future of the seven-stage roadmap which Khin Nyunt had announced in August last year after his appointment as prime minister, Razali said: I do not want to speculate. I must have more details about the developments.
Razali had successfully brokered national reconciliation talks between National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the junta in October 2000, but the talks collapsed last year.
Suu Kyi, who led her party to a general election win in 1990 that was not recognised by the ruling military, was placed under house arrest in September last year. Bernama
