GREEN DAY LYRICS
American Idiot
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Oh man you gotta be kidding me.
Picture the scene: Billy Joe wakes up one day and turns on the telly to see that fat fuck Michael Moore on telly talking about how awesome he is. He flicks over and he sees Fat Mike talking about how awesome John Kerry is. He goes to his local arena and Anti-Flag and Against Me are playing and telling everyone to vote Kerry.
BJA: Hang on a sec...we need a gimmick to sell our new record. I know!!! Let's go political!! The kids will love it!!! As will TV cos we can share chat show slots with Al Franklin (or whatever the ****'s name is).
Oh man I hate major label faux-punk. I hate Hatebreed, but if Jamey Jasta et al kicked those moron's asses, I'd shake their hands. Little poseur twats. They don't care about politics, THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY.
I mean, yeah, politically hardcore isn't great, but at least it's sincere. I'd take some tough guy band singing about how much they hate activists over Green Day's new fucking share price anyday cos they mean it. And, believe me, Billy Joe Arm$trong does not.
Rant over. Go back to watching Kerrang TV.

Yeah, I totally hated this song when it came out but I've gotten to liking it. Even if they don't know what they're talking about it's just a fun, catchy, pop song, that's kind of political.

hey fuck you guys....it doesnt matter what the band to sell records, a band the size of green day DO NOT need gimmicks to sell records. Is it not the case, that since they released their newest album, that the governing office in the white house has changed, and along with it someones plitical ideas?!?!
its insane to say someone fabricates political views just to sell records....its these fucking pussy bands like the Foo Fighters, Slipknot and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers who should be condemned for trudging out the same crap album after album with no message behind it whatsoever.
Why do people feel the need to criticise Green Day?!?! dare i say it Incubus?!?!

No. It means that you're rebelling against the status quo and/or mainstream culture, but you don't have an alternative. You just like being different. That what rebelling without a cause is. You have no cause.

Heh heh heh....Each of the last 5 Chilis albumks have varied dramatically.
By The Way was a light, slower rock albhum with much less of the funk of previous albums
Californication was a bit like By The Way but a lot harder, more serious and faster, quite some more funk too
One Hot Minute was kinda dull but still much different to the others, suitably melodic like Californication yet very funky like Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a serious extremely funky album to the level of rapping, it was extremely fast and VERY different to their lighter By The Way.
Mother's Milk was a real mess around album with lots of slightly cheesy songs and cliched rhythms while still feeling very fresh.
Admittedly I do agree with you on the Green Day thing.

I bought Warning a few years ago, big mistake. I never liked Green day much and this just has to top it off. Call me cynical but I agree with GR, although no doubt the Green Day boys would say they genuinely believe what they're saying and what to get their message out there, etc ,etc blah blah blah.

Green Day have always had a mild left leaning tilt. I don't know about their lyrics other than the song posted above, but in their actions they have supported organizations like Food Not Bombs. Which may not be much but it is far better than lending support to far right (nazi) parties because you think too many brown skinned people are invading your country.
Obviously they won't be giving Crass a run for their money but you have to figure for the average Green Day fan this song is political. There have been other bands that started off apolitcal and then became political (the Neurotics) the same way it happens with people. People aren't born political some just learn faster than others and some are smarter than others.
And no, no Green Day in my music collection.

WHY THE FUCK DOES PUNK NEED TO HAVE AGGRESSION
Shut the fuck up, asshole. I really can't be bothered getting into an argument again on music tastes - I'm rather partisan as far as that's concerned. I don't especially like anything I've heard that could be classified as 'punk' anyway, and certainly I've never had anyone try to show me a piece of 'punk' that wasn't both loud and angry.
I'll stick in general into that post if you like, but it doesn't change a fucking thing.
Who cares what they 'think' they are
Some people, apparently. They don't want to be associated with specific bands/groups, and ergo 'pigeonhole' themselves. Take guerillaradio's post:
Green Day are such poseurs. i bet they think they're "punk". Pricks.
Does that not intimate to you that he/she considers themselves punk?
its us a society who label these bands.
Society; Social; Interpersonal; People. QED.
people dont put themselves into pigeonholes, society does that for them
So this site isn't full of people declaring "I'm a communist" and the like? Wow, I reckon I'd better put the bong down...

Ok, You make a good pointa nd some bad ones.
A) Punk doesn't need aggression, its about doing playing and being what you like, NOT what others want you to be like. This just happens to tend to be associated with guys saying "fuck you" to the world which does tend to be pretty agressive. In so far as being and doing what you want is concerned Green Day are kinda punk....They've been through plenty of criticisms and never cared.
B)The Red Hot Chili Peppers ARE huge but they also RULE. Give 'em a chance dude. Let the lurve in.
C) The Sex Pistols are NOT the god fathers of old school punk. The Damned are. The Damned were playing way before the Sex Pistols and released the first brit punk album. Do your research or don't comment. I learnt that the hard way.
D) Some big bands are good. Just because they're big doesn't make them good or bad. For example the Beatles and Kinks are two of the biggest bands on the face of the planet, but everyone likes them.
E)I think arguing about opinions is stupid. If you think one way think it, don't let someone change your opinion and don't force yoru opinion on someone. if someone forces their opinion on them ignore them.

Anyone one who thinks punk is more about attitude than sound is an idiot and doesnt know what they are talking about. Punk is a sound, lyrics and attitude are all just an extension of that.
The exact same goes for rock music, Metallica is no more or less a rock band than say HIM, even though they sing about totally different things.
The Punk scene is so elitist as well, everything is so abrasive that way, even a slightly different apporach to the sound or lyrics is attacked as fake, or not punk enough. The kids who listen to it are called fakes, etc.
Its bullshit, and the real punks know it.
The Forum Idiot
15th October 2004, 16:29
You just contradicted yourself. If punk's a sound then the Slits, Green Day, Offspring or even in some ways the Buzzcocks aren't punk. Even though they are. Punk IS an attitude. It means freedom and the ability to do what you want with music. By attitude I don't mean agressive at all, I mean it is a way of looking at things. Being a punk means playing music how you want, with or without technical ability, saying, doing and thinking what you think. Its pretty simple really. Being a punk is more complex, just because you sound like someone doe sthat mean you aren't doing what you want but what sells well? That's the question. To answer it you must look at the PEOPLE who are calling themselves punks.
Invader Zim

You just contradicted yourself.
How so?
If punk's a sound then the Slits, Green Day, Offspring or even in some ways the Buzzcocks aren't punk.
but they are, you can here the difference between them and any other genre you could care to name.
Punk IS an attitude.
How so, you just mentioned the Offspring, yet they are hardly radical, like say the sex pistols, yet they are still punk, its because of the sound they produce. You could have never seen an image of them , and not taken any notice of the lyrics, yet still know they are a punk band, because of the sound.
It means freedom and the ability to do what you want with music.
Then tell me why numerous bands, as soon as they reach some kind of success are branded as fakes, even though they are saying and doing what they like with the punk sound?
To answer it you must look at the PEOPLE who are calling themselves punks.
Visually?

Punk is so diverse, the only thing they all have in common is in general the sound, you can tell when you hear a punk track, whether it be a band like "The exploited" or "Green day". You can hear it.
You also say: -
"just because you sound like someone doe sthat mean you aren't doing what you want but what sells well?"
Well the supposed fakes, such as Greenday, started with the same sort of sound as they have now, yet they didn't sell when they started. So what does that say? Your theory about what is punk has holes, if you ask me.

You took everything the wrong way. I meant look at the people as PEOPLE. Looka t their beliefs, etc. The question was taken the wrong way COMPLETELY. As wrong way as you possibly ever could. I meant that if you want your sound to be mainstream that doesn't mean its bad as long as you aren't doing it for the money, I love green day and I reckon they're punk. On the sound thing....The sex pistols, clash, slits and green day all sound totally different. And The Offspring do have very punk ideas...
Here's teh thing, Billy Bragg is punk but he sounds NOTHING like ANY "typical" punk band. Answer that? He is very much a punk but sounds nothing like the common stereotype.

Of course the sex pistols aren't punk, but they paved the way for the punk stereotype...
punk has...(or should have) nothing to do with money. Its an expression from freedom of the materialistic possessions within your life...punk sings ..(once again typically) about oppression and fighting against your would-be oppressors.
may i ask what some of these punk ideas you refer to are?

Green Day is the most idiotic band ever. They cannot decide on even a loose style, and will inevitably slide from pop to political pop rock to whatever. Good bands know their own style and stick to it ( so they at least have a chance to get fans ). All types of music are good for me. Excluding country and gospel.
Now somebody must know who sings this...
"We sold some mushroom tea, we sold some extasy, we sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin, and pcp. And now I hear the police coming after me."
"Life's too short so love the one you got, cause you might get runover or you might get shot."
"Some folks say that smoking herb is a crime, if they catch you smoking there bound to drop the dime."
I kill you if you no know what this are!
the band is sublime
dont know what the first song is 2nd is what i got from their self titled album, and the 3rd is Get ready from also their self titled album
(im a sublime nut)

... Good bands know their own style and stick to it ( so they at least have a chance to get fans ). ...
Yes good bands know their place and won't try to improve or challenge themselves or their fans. [/b]
What is the difference between Jet and the Beatles? Well, they both play classic rock.... if Jet became as good as the Beatles one day, well they won't have changed their style have they? But they have improved
Challenge their fans
If I lose interest in a band I won't cling to them like a mangy dog, buying all of their subsequent albums and trying to like them again - I will just listen to a new artist / band. I don't actually mind bands 'evolving' but I do mind when a publicity agent forces the evolution.

A little late don't you think?
Anyway, this Jet band who I am not familiar with are not classic rock. They can't be because they seem to be a very late 20th or 21st century creation.
What is the difference between them and the Beatles? Well for one all the good Beatles are dead. John Lennon is another difference. Now if this band wants to pretend to be the gnu Beatles the way Oasis once did/does(I don't really care which) then that's their problem.
Then you go on to speculate that they might become as good as the Beatles without changing their style. Don't you think you are assuming a lot? How can you know if they will change their style or not?
As for you losing interest in a band or artist, that happens every day and you can be pretty sure that the thing that makes them unappealing to you will likely make them appealing to someone else.
On to the part about a publicity agent. I agree with you but I didn't think that was part of your original statement.

It's pretty absurd to say that Jet will ever become as famous as the Beatles by playing "classic rock" style music. The Beatles rocked because they were something new. Jet's music is nothing new. The track that gets airplay all the time, whatever it's called, sounds just like Lust for Life by Iggy Pop. All their music is a completely uncreative blend of The Stones, AC/DC, and the Beatles. Nothing new here. Never gonna make it huge.

The average Black male
Live a third of his life in a jail cell
Cause the world is controlled by the white male
And the people don' never get justice
And the womben don' never get respected
And the problems don' never get solved
And the jobs don' never pay enough
So the rent always be late.
Can you relate?
We living in a police state
No more bondage, no more political monsters
No more secret space launchers
Government departments started it in the projects
Material objects, thousands up in the closets
Could've been invested in a future for my comrades
Battle contacts, primitive weapons out in combat
Many never come back
Pretty niggas be running with gats
Rather get shot in they back than fire back
We tired of that
Corporations hiring Blacks, denying the facts
Exploiting us all over the map
That's why I write the shit I write in my raps
It's documented, I'm in it
Every day of the week I live in it, breathing it
It's more than just fucking believing it
I'm holding in ones, rolling up my sleeves an' shit
It's (Cee-lo?) for push-ups now
Many headed for one conclusion
Niggas ain't ready for revolution

So most of you guys are saying that as a band you can't make a song about how you're not happy with the society as it is??? Come on, let music be music, if they are serious then they'll let you now and if not, so what??? If you like the song, listen to it, if not, don't ...
What's the problem?
Yea, what's ur problem? No one is forcing you to listen to them. So keep your F***** mouth shut, will ya?
For one thing they are cool, and They are doing their best.

For that's enough to argue.

you know what, no matter what you are conforming to something. by going along with "green day rocks, and wow, american idiot is such a masterpiece billie joe is really political" you're pretty close minded, the problem with music today isn't the music, it's that it has become so commercialized that it isn't even music anymore. i blame a lot of this on MTV. kids don't even need to listen to what they like anymore cause MTV tells them what they WANT. people now adays don't even buy cds, they hear a song on the radio-download it-listen while it's popular and then "drop it like it's hot." search a little deeper, don't like something because other people like it.
and for the
FUCK ANTIFLAG FUCK GREENDAY FUCK NOFX assholes
well.. your just as big a poser as anyone else. i hate people who just cause they listen to lesser known bands they think they are better than everyone else.
"rebels without a cause..." they are a fucking pop band. POP BAND. they arent intented to have a huge political message that will change the views of america today. i liked Green Days earlier stuff because it didn't have a message. it was just fun, like my life-im in highschool and im not gonna get up everyday be serious and go try to pick fights with people about politics and their views on life. not everything has to be perfect.
and for all you
Green Day is sincere and they didn't come out with their new CD cause that's what everyone was doing but because they were changing themselves and their style.
That's just stupid. First off, Green Day was partly political, no more than they are now. If you actually listened to some of their CDs and not just American Idiot you'd see that he has put his view on life in a lot of his songs. No way am I saying this makes them political, just pointing out the fact, cause i mean, boulivard of broken dreams isn't even political at all. And in their style of music, I say they changed twice during their whole carrier. From their first couple of CDs, through insomniac and dookie they where more punk i guess. real basic. Mike actually played the bass. then from nimrod up they become dangerously poppy. they took almost took the distortion completly off. So don't tell me that they changed their music cause i can name at least three songs with the exact same rhythme as Sassafrass Root of theirs. What really pisses me off are the people who are "such hardcore Green Day fans and love Billie Joe" and when I ask them how many Cds of they band they have it's always... uh... American Idiot. come on..

There are some Green Day songs that I like, and Dookie was a great album, and I couldnt give less of a shit about the "are they or arent they still punk " question, who gives a shit. Having said that I heard the new album once and hated it, honestly. It has nothing to do with anything outside the fact I didnt like the album. Others can like it..thats fine. To me it was one of the worst albums ive taken the time to listen to in awhile.
