What is the Anarchy symbol called? The socialists have a rose, communist a sickle and hammer so on and so on. I know the symbol is an "A" with a circle around it but what is that symbol called. Thanks

It doesn't have a specific name, but Neonate is right in pointing out what it stands for.

Proudhan, a 19th century Anarchist created a Maxim "Anarchy is Order" so followers of anarchism encircled an A to represent that maxism. The circle is an O, in which there is an A.

So quite rightly, anarchy is order!

Where does the circled A come from? (http://www.diy-punk.org/anarchy/append2.html#circledA)

The black cat is the unofficial symbol of the IWW, if that's what you mean.

It is when taken in laymans terms. Like TAT said that Proudhon first said "anarchy is order". Proudhin being a Anarchist (although i belive his followers chose to be called syndicalist) had studied and pionered anarchism. He and all anarchist argued that the working class do not need a state to be productive.

So anarchy, which means the following.

Absence of any form of political authority.
Political disorder and confusion.
Absence of any cohesive principle, such as a common standard or purpose.

Arguing and coming to the conclusion that a society of the progressive class in control through commuanal onwership is anarchy, but having the sam interest and goals they work together.

So therefore if you were anarchist "anarchy = order" is true and not a oxymoron because in a socio-political sense anarchy leads to order of a society.

It's sometimes hard to tell whether or not you go out of your way to sound ignorant.

I'm confused, are you saying that anarchism is this, or that people see anarchism as this?

Thats from the dictionary. I took the common known meaning to make my point.

No, it's a cat. It comes from the phrase "Wildcat strike", when workers strike out without any notice. I think so anyway.

Anarchy is Order Is an Oxy-Moron.

If you want to act the ass with this, then Anarchism Is Order. :)

Yes. It was designed by the IWW, more specifically by Ralph Chaplin.

There's a good resource I've contributed to for important Anarchist Symbolism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchist_symbolism) over at wikipedia.

I'm not sure the anarchist "A" has any name other than the "Anarchist symbol" or "circled-A". As for the cat, it is more associated with anarcho-syndicalism, if I'm correct.

Then of course there are the black (and red & black) flags.

Sabcat or Wildcat or what ever people like to call it. It's often affiliated with the Anarcho-Syndaclist movement. I have a Wildcat patch on one of my jumpers, I wear it to show class unity and class Sabotage etc.

There are many symbols used in the Anarchist movement like the Clogg the monkey wrench and hammer etc.
