The movie was really good.
But maybe you guys could look for some of the other Motorcycle Diaries threads in this very same forum. There are at least five other ones. No need to begin a new thread about the same movie every week, now is there?

I'm excited to be going to see it tonight. It is in a very limited number of theatres in my area. I actually have to go into Cambridge, (affectionately refferred to as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Cambridge by right and left wingers alike :) ) to see it. Cambridge being a large liberal city next to Boston, (home of Harvard, MIT, and other campuses for those of you not familiar) it came as no surprise that this is where the movie would be playing.

That last scene where tehy show the real Alberto Granado made me cry too. Oh, and also when he swam across the river. That was fucking incredible. I wrote a review for on it for my film class. I posted it here (http://www.che-lives.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28249).

The last scene with Alberto I didn't find too moving. Mainly the river scene... cause you just start thinking about how willing he was to die for the people he caed about, even if it wasn't from a bullet.

Going to see it tonight, it's playing in my city. Will give a review, although heard it is excellent. Having a tough time with the lack of resemblance of the star, he also doesn't seem to have a revolutionary zeal about him. But the truth will be in the viewing.

<sarcasm>Yeah, they look nothing like one another</sarcasm>
This argument seems to come up a lot, and all i can say is that if you don't think Gael looks like Che when he was younger you got some issues. About the only major difference is their. Gael's are seemingly a lot wider, and when he smiles he gets less of a cheek overlap than Che. Aside from that I'd say it's good. But then again, what do I know? I think George Clooney looks like Che!
As far as revolutionary zeal, that's why they call it acting. Furthermore, Che didn't really have a revolutionary "zeal" about him before he left for the trip. To keep it short, this movie has little to do with revolution at all, and if you think it does, you're gonna be sadly disappointed. Although it does hint at such things a bit here or there, I would hardly consider Che to have revolutionary "zeal" at this point in his life, even if I only had the book to judge on.

I think he should've cast Diego Luna as Che. He looks a lot like Che.

What exactly are you talking about here? =D

I saw it. I loved it.
I thought the film had some great moments. For instance the scene that they met the husband and wife kicked off their land for being communists, and then going to try to get work at the Anaconda Mine. I also liked the scene where Alberto is desperate for the $15 dollars that Che had, and he told him that he gave it to the communist mining husband and wife.
I also loved the line from the little kid acting as tour guide telling them as they looked at a large church that "this is Jesus Christ Incorporated", to which Che or Alberto asks, " Are they still in business?" :)
Visually the movie was gorgeous. The view of Machu Pichu was fantastic, as was Che's comment about it and it's civilization in comparison to the civilization in Lima.
I've read a lot of reviews where they say there was nothing political about the film and that it was a movie about a trip etc, etc. I disagree. There is plenty of political statement in this film. Some subtle, some not so subtle.
NovelGent: I saw it at Kendall Square. Where did you see it?

I went to Cooleridge Corner. BTW, to that line that made no sense I was saying "lips" I thought I had typed it, apparently I didn't. I've not slept in awhile, give me a break. But yes, Gael appears to have a lot wider lips. They seem to span the entire width of his face almost when he grins just right... Che on the other hand I think had a bit more cheekage to keep his lips receeded (even if just in appearance)

Come on now Novel Gentry, I hadn't even seen the movie yet, and you're critizing what i saw from the previews, where is the love :P
He doesn't always look that much like him, but the eyes are similar. Still none of the passion, if you look at Guevara he always had a haunted driven look about his eyes even as a child, possibly dark circles from difficulty breathing paritcularly at night causing lack of sleep, hard to say.
Honestly people do need to stop being hostile to one another here.
Did see the movie it was great recognize they are trying to paraphrase Guevara's afterthoughts at the end of the diaries with the "crossing the Amazon" segment, as to my studies, never happened, the patients came out on a raft to wish them goodbye, but it symbolized the transformation well.
One criticism was that they underestimated Guevara before the trip, he was already completing his medical work in 3 years what was completed normally in 6, and had explored the North of Argentina.
Also Chincina was really underestimated, she was a brillant young lady, which was not portrayed, and a bit moody and dark herself.
But what was brillant was Alberto's assistance with the production in getting the story of their interaction more true to life. Beautiful to see him at the end.
Incidently it was Che who kissed the riverboat prostitute not Alberto.

I'm not criticizing what you saw, I'm criticizing what you said. Cause I think this argument is insane, and it's not the first place I've heard it. Plain and simple he resembles hima heck of a lot more than marginally.
As far as "being hostile," you're the one taking it as hostile, not me. It's not like when I read your post I started screaming at the computer and throwing things around my room. The only hostility here is the hostility you perceive.

WEll, let's face it, Pandora -- There's only one person who looks like Che and there's only one person who acts like Che, having those rare, elusive magnanimous qualities,---Che himself, with Marcos coming in a close second,--the rest all bad imitators. heheh! True!
Haven't seen the movie yet, may plan to go this weekend --- a real stretch for me, as I can't think of any worse hell than those tiny little torture seats and the asshole behind you kicking them every few minutes. I'm surprised people aren't getting murdered in those places daily. But, I was wondering, if anyone can tell me, --- is the movie in subtitles? I don't want to go completely shit-faced if it is.
Anyway, I was reading that the guy who plays Alberto, --Rodrigo de la Serna (che's mother's name) is che's second cousin --- obviously, on his mother's side.
Sabocat

Yes, it is in subtitles.

Wow! Alberto's awesome in the film.
They also missed out the peaches incident, and them stowing away on the boat, complete with the best line of the whole book, but I can't remember what it is exactly.
So what if Gael and Che don't look identical? It's not about that anyway. And although che was pretty educated politically (I think his rents had marx in their library and he'd read it) it took this trip to open his eyes to reality, and I don't believe at this point in his life he would have had the revolutionary feeling that made him what he's remembered to be.
It'll be interesting to see the biopic coming out next year. It's american, so I wonder what slant they'll put on it.
I loved this film, it's beautiful and really helps understand what drove che, which is was so many people miss out on in western cultures, since we've got so much just handed to us on a plate. My mum really liked the "old soul".
Spoiler ahead!
The communist couple really moved me. It was when they revealed why they'd been kicked off their land that I got goose bumps, feeling che-s reaction to that persecution because of their political beliefs, beliefs which believed in taking power from the exploiters to the exploited. it felt like that was the moment when things really started to click. The end made me sad, I wanted to watch his whole life, with Alberto who was a really amazing character. Also I liked the bit at the end with Alberto now, linking it to today. I wonder what Alberto thinks of Castro.

Hey! Thanks Disgustipated! By the way - Happy Birthday! I was just checking out that thread. :) What a cool age and what a cool boat!
Yeah, Mental Bunny! I always thought it interesting that two people experienced the same events, saw the same things, but only One was affected so much to commit his life in trying to change the things he saw. I remember that one of the last things he said before he was murdered, when he was asked why he started the insurrection in Bolivia --- I don't remember the exact words or quote -- but he basically said that the school he was being held in was not even fit for an animal and that he came to help these people. It's amazing the sequence of his life, it came full circle-- synthezing the beginning and the end. Really, one could not have wrote a better tragedy if it was fictional. His life was very noble, but very sad. And he is very special. I hope the movie can convey that.
Anyway, I'm yet to see the movie, still.

Woops, hi, long time no see.
I think the movie is amazing. If any of you remember I have been waiting for this movie for two years (since the pre-production, obviously). Gael is amazing as Che. I do believe they look alike, there's one picture where they look alike so much it could be either of them! I'll look it up and post it later.
Besides, Gael is the one person I know that knows more about Che than anyone else (like I said, that I know. I'm sure there's obviously people who knows more but you know what I mean. :P ) I think he did a great job and so as Rodrigo.
I think Gael's accent is pretty good (as far as I can tell. I'm mexican, not argentinian, so I could be wrong).

I wonder what Alberto thinks of Castro.
Well, Alberto went to Cuba on Che's invitation and has remained there to this day, so I would guess that at the very least, Alberto is a believer in the Revolution and it's ideals.
I also doubt that he would have stayed if he felt that Castro was completely subverting the Revolution.

I can't tell you how great this movie is. I saw it last night downtown in Philly at The Ritz. DAMN! It really left me like DAMN!!!!
Just to see his mental growth like that was great. There were so many scenes that I liked, but the whole Tango Mambo thing was hilarious.
Also, the way he treated the patients on the Amazon just showed how he really was. Both he and Alberto.
The scenery in the movie is INCREDIBLE and makes me want to take a tour of South America. And not just the tourists spots. The REAL South America.

I thought it was an excellent movie and I will go and see it again:) It was really beautiful movie and my wife and I recognized lots of the places where we have been as well in Perú:) Such a nice movie!! A must go see! Im going to get that one on dvd when I find it, but you guys should check out Paloma de Papel as well or Paperdove as its in english. Its a great peruvian movie and an excellent drama that tells a little bit about the situation in the 80´s and the 90´s in Perú with the senderistas fighting against the government, but with the peasants paying the price as always. check out palomadepapel.com for some trailers, music and everything. And yeah, the director is a really nice guy, met him yesterday;)

I'm still unsure if I want to see this film or not, but then I really should give it a chance. Problem is, the closest cinema to me that's running it is over 100 miles away.... That means it'll cost me £ticket +£40 of fuel to get there/back
I'm told there was a bus company in the UK that runs between the major cities for £1 each way; I can't seem to find it though <_< Oh well :(
We've got two mainstream and one alternative cinema in the city near my home, but none of them are running it. How shitty is that?

I saw the movie Tuesday at coolidge corner and spent the last several days reading and searching for everything about Che .... The movie is very good, but the life of Che is amazing .... Havent seen a film touches me like this for sooo long. The movie is very well made, acted, you dont even feel they are acting there .... but the message carrys the movie to a different level. There are scenes in the movie are almost exactly the same as what I have seen in my real life on the other side of the earth: the boat with poor people dragged by the ship, how workers are picked up .... I wish one day I can travel the same route ....

I agree. The movie was so well acted, you totally forgot it was a movie at all. Bernal does such a great job. I saw an interview with him on the Bravo channel last night, and he was saying how much of an honor it was to play Che in the movie. He said he looked at Che like most latin americans did, as a father figure. A true leader.
I really can't say enough about the movie. It's easily the most inspirational movie I've ever seen.
