I saw the newsnight documentry which I must admit leaves you feeling somewhat attached to Jack Straw. He appears to be a rather nice chap.

I don't know if anyone else watched it, but I think you'd agree that the room with all those heads of states and Foreign ministers sat in was almost comical. It was like a school common room with all the big boys standing in one corner and the mean old bully [Mugabe] that no one likes sitting in another corner looking all surly and contemptouas.

The whole hand shake thing was one of those embarresing social situations which we have all experienced. Mugabe put up his hand to get a drink from a tray and Straw was ushered across the room, he obviously thought it was an indication to shake his hand, which he then obliged, to the absolute shock of Robert Mugabe who then kept trying to pull his hand away, which made the whole scene even more embarresing.

It was one of those awkward situations where you misread everything, like when you go to hug someone but they weren't sure whether to hug you so they put out their hand to shake or when you hug someone and your not really sure how long the hug is supposed to last and pull away to soon.

But I thought what capped it all off was when Straw walks away and Robert Mugabe turns to his aide and says "who was that?"

For anyone who did see it, I thought that the conversation between Jack Straw and Colin Powell on their way down the street was incredible. Jack Straw seemed to almost bound admiringly at the side of Powell like some hypoactive school boy, glancing at the camera every now and then to make sure they were looking at him. Powell walked with all the arrogance of an american politician, with Straw chirping out information in what seemed to be some attempt to either make it look as if he and Powell were best of buds or to impress him with all the work he was doing. Powell just looked bored and not really very interested in the small little poodle like man who was finding it difficult to keep up with him.

You always think that these politicians are some kind of superpower monsters, but really, their just humans.

He has apparently had surgery on his eyes to correct his vision.

Either that didn't work, or he lost his glasses and just lied about the surgery.

what capped it all off was when Straw walks away and Robert Mugabe turns to his aide and says "who was that?"

I was near pissing myself when I saw that - he kind of bumbled over towards him, and you saw Mugabe looking utterly perplexed.

Priceless :D

He appears to be a rather nice chap.

Yes, but given this scenario I would say it's evident that he certainly isn't leadership material - let alone decision-making material

Shame - I'm quite sure he'd be a nice guy to sit and have 'brandy and cigars' with <_<
