View Full Version : My Campaign On The Campus

Yes, if you read my introduction post, you probably know I'm a leftist activist currently enrolled in high school in the richest neighborhood of San Diego county. But, I need help, for an update, I would like to keep you guys informed on my (our) neverending on the campus.
First few weeks-
Major setback, our plan for a "Red Club" is put on hold, we did not meet the quota for minium members (you need at least 8, we have 5). So we decided, after much debate in our little circle of Socialists and Marxists, to endorse the Democratic club, for one main reason, to help boot Bush. So we joined up, our objective is to particpate in the activism for the elections, heckm maybe some of our "redness" will rub off on some students that way.
Currently, our plan is to voice ourselves through the school newspaper, I myself am a talented writer, with help from the rest of my comrades, will write radically different political articles in the columns that will be much refreshing from the usaul liberal and conservative drabble of "abortion" and "war in Iraq" so we are bound to catch some eyes. We'll be focusing on topics like the Socialist movement in South America, American Imperialism, anti-religous editorials, destroying the myth of Socialism and Communism, also writing alternate articles about Iraq, like what the Iraqi left wing has done in Iraq so far, and exposing American Imperialism in Iraq, which the liberal and conservative writers have left untouched. Our main stratgery is that our views take the political discussions at school by storm, revealing a new political outlook at school, make people get out of the petty mode of thinking like a liberal or conservative.
We also will spread the word through simple word, speaking to people, one of our plans is to organize a debate between the Republican and Democractic club and manuver in there to show our alternate standpoint, presenting a third choice.
Also, we are seeking for a local leftist group, I looked up the site that was referred to me before on this site, a student group at a local university, we'll be looking into that, but if there are anymore people know about, I would be more than glad to know about them.
Next years goal is to have enough people interested in the subject to join the 'Red Club' theres a dissapointing amount of liberal and conservative domination, or even more common, plain ignorance, which we must clear away.
So far, we have one more recuirt, he knows nothing of Socialism, but he is interested, so we'll have to teach him throughout the year. We're opitmists! The struggle continues, wish me luck, give me suggestions, comments, anything will help!
EDIT: Forgot to add, in future prospects, I do have a older freind who organized some type of Socialist Youth Leauges at some high schools not very far away, I'm thinking of getting in contact with him and seeing if we could get more politcally active.

Can I call you a sell out? Ok, you're a sellout.
Why spread your ideas through the system, why not subvert the system and spread them that way?
We also will spread the word through simple word, speaking to people, one of our plans is to organize a debate between the Republican and Democractic club and manuver in there to show our alternate standpoint, presenting a third choice.
This would be good if debates weren't moderated. Debates aren't for presenting points, they're for explaining your position on the ones already selected. Formal debates anyway.
Make your own "Red Club" -- I don't see why it has to be school sanctioned, meet at your local library, become more active than the other two clubs combined and take your student body by storm. When they have elections or whatever, if they do and that is the goal, have a Majority write in. Then see what happens when the administration announces the winner of the only official candidates when 70% of the student body knows 70% of the student body wrote in someone else.

We already have that in sense, as a group, its just that we aren't offical so its a big blow to recuirting efforts, right now we've been doing a simple tactic of debating teachers in class, getting in yelling matches in the classroom before class starts with other students about Socialism to draw attention. Gaining the reputation of being a radical group of Communists. We haven't really formalized yet, no actual club manifesto or guidelines, just a loose democractic group of students (five of us). Once the newspaper is underway, we plan to further that outlook of presenting our views to the student population. We're really trying to get people interested, but its very, very difficult currently, until we work up our reputation, its going to be that way, we're overrun by the two other clubs, (they have something of 50-150 members). Next year, we hope we'll have a base of support big enough to become a major power in the student body. We're starting at barebones right now.
Can I call you a sell out? Ok, you're a sellout.
It wasen't my idea, we had a vote on it, my view lost, even though I'm the ringleader, I don't want to be a dictator, I'm still going to try to persuade us to quit. Or we can cause such a ruckus and firestorm in the Democractic club that we get kicked out, again, that'll help us get noticed.
Why spread your ideas through the system, why not subvert the system and spread them that way?
Sort of what I was trying to get at, sort of "guerilla" politics, classroom soap box speeches, articles in the newspapers, lunch break yelling matches, to build publicity for being some bold small group.
I like your idea of more formalized meetings, I'll take that up.

I wonder how you went about finding other "reds" at your school. I too, attend a very rich school in so cal, but almost everyone is republican. There are a few hippies, 1 or 2, but I wouldn't know how to find other of the "red" persuasion.

Well now can you all stop stomping on the poor person long enough to congragulate him!
By introducing the aspect of collaboration with other less extreme groups opening to dialogue and exchange of ideas, with the strong
BACKBONE of PUBLICATION of a left wing forum, he will attract many more people to the group.
Why are people insulting this person for his clear attempt, at not finding enough other leftists, a. it's september b. Once that newsletter starts going out they will find him, and he'll bring on a storm of right wing controversy. San Diego school district for those that don't know is a right wing think tank, one of the test babies of no child left behind and the site of the previous Republican Convention, he's going to make the papers and get threatened regardless.
The least y'all could do is support his behind before the dogs go after him!
Ah I actually like San Diego for surfing, if this goes well I could set my sights south for the good fight, right on the border of Mexico no!

I am to congratulate him based on what he said? He conformed to a system he was presented as being unable to work outside of -- that's what I call giving up. The school is making it a two party issue, and it's not, and he should be fighting every minute he can to make it not.
By introducing the aspect of collaboration with other less extreme groups opening to dialogue and exchange of ideas, with the strong

Yes, many more people who are more left than the democrats but more right than their communist party.
Why are people insulting this person for his clear attempt, at not finding enough other leftists, a. it's september b. Once that newsletter starts going out they will find him, and he'll bring on a storm of right wing controversy.
He, however, is not a represented party, but a mere portion now of a represented party which is far more republican than he could ever conceive to be. Through this he has two options -- he can work to be expelled from the party and start his own faction (in which case he has done exactly what I suggested he do from the start rather than join the Dems to begin with) -- or he can live within side the party rules, in which case he will get NOWHERE. He's just wasting time -- in the time it takes for the Dems to organize and start printing he could have already printed and freely distributed 200 copies. With his 4 or 5 people that's only 50 or 40 a piece. What makes what he's saying any different in a party sponsored paper? Other than the fact that it might have far less reach than his independent campaign could.
San Diego school district for those that don't know is a right wing think tank, one of the test babies of no child left behind and the site of the previous Republican Convention, he's going to make the papers and get threatened regardless.
Then what is the point of joining a party? It offers him no protection and in the end he's going to accomplish the same thing by methods outside the system that he could have accomplished possibly months earlier if he hadn't had to waste time working within the Democrats campaign.
The least y'all could do is support his behind before the dogs go after him!
What am I doing by suggesting these things? telling him he's not worth my time? If anything I've done a whole lot more in terms of giving him ideas thus far than blind compliments ever could.
Lastly... calling the democrats "left wing" is like calling hambuger steak. Some of it may be composed of the same material, but no matter how hard you try it will never look the same, taste the same, or be the same.

Well, whatever path we take, we're determined to keep ourselves from being assimilated into the democrats. I held a meeting last Friday, again, our reputation is already making some progress, I was seeked out by a junior, a die-hard Socialist, who will be a helpful contribution to the group.
As for articles, we're compiling possible subjects and information on some scathing issues that seem quite untouched by the mainstream media, it could be a help if yoy knew of any, I would be happy to include them into our list.
I have been verbally attacked by alot of the right wingers, some threatening to get us "shut down", empty threats so far, but again, reputation is growing the more disorder we cause!
I'm planning for a meeting on Wensday about a second discussion of breaking away and forming our own faction and even the possibility of our own faction newspaper, which might be hard sicne we aren't an offical club, but I bet we will think of something, any good names anyone?
Clubs have only offically started last week, so there hasen't been any "wasted" time. The main reason for co-operating jointly with the democrats was for the anti-Bush activism, or we expected, so far there has been no talk of activism, so we probably drop out if nothing happens.
Tommorow, I'm going to see the freind of mine who organized Socialist Youth Leagues at some schools, I'll talk to him for some help.
I wonder how you went about finding other "reds" at your school. I too, attend a very rich school in so cal, but almost everyone is republican. There are a few hippies, 1 or 2, but I wouldn't know how to find other of the "red" persuasion.
Ask about, talk to people about politics, sound out their ideology, if they sound leftist, ask them, also ask your freinds if they know of anyone leftist, get outspoken about your political beliefs despite the conquenses, it will raise eyebrows, but it will attract similarly minded people to you. Which part of Southeren California?

Ask about, talk to people about politics, sound out their ideology, if they sound leftist, ask them, also ask your freinds if they know of anyone leftist, get outspoken about your political beliefs despite the conquenses, it will raise eyebrows, but it will attract similarly minded people to you. Which part of Southeren California?

The main reason for co-operating jointly with the democrats was for the anti-Bush activism, or we expected, so far there has been no talk of activism, so we probably drop out if nothing happens.

near San Diego, I don't wish to get too specific... there are a couple of nazi/fascist types at my school.
But I went into a Borders book store today, and bought the Communist Manifesto. The clerk gave me a nice stare. Ah well. What I think I'll do is distribute, in an inconspicous fashion, flyers telling any leftists to email me at an email I'll set up, so i can organize it from there. Oh, and a good name for your newspaper would be The Red Star.

good luck in all your efforts.
keep dodging the bullet of reformism. Don't endorse kerry. In fact, go up to the dems and bust their chops. Like someone said on this very board:
Where was Kerry when the bill came before the Senate to extend unemployment benefits for the people who had exhausted them? The extension failed. By one vote. Kerry didn't think it was important enough to leave the campaign trail to vote on something as trivial as the welfare of unemployed workers.

Update on my struggle!
We dumped the Democrats! I finally used some manuvering to get my group to vote ourselves out thanks to some lesser known intentions and views of Kerry that helped them change their mind. We still do collaborate with the Democrats in some anti-Republican activities. Including today, we teamed up with a few liberal operatives, the republicans were holding a club meeting and promised free pizza and ice cream to those who attended. About half of the school went. Unluckly, what they found was melted ice cream and pizza missing from the pizza boxes thanks to some actions made by some anti-conservative operatives.
So far, since the school year is still setting up, we're going to organize a leaflet campaign for our 'newspaper' probably just weekly one or two more paged flyers since we don't have the funds for a fullscale newspaper campaign. An advantage about not being a offical club, we aren't sanctioned by the school! So we can probably wiggle by with this little action. We're still thinking of a name, it should be acceptable to moderates , so they won't be scared away from reading it, BUT, it needs to be radical never the less. Any suggestions?

Never try to "appeal" or "seem acceptable" to moderates. Be hardcore! Call yourselves "The raging alcoholic communists" or "The red crusaders" or something.

Maybe you should think about advertising and advertise your group alittle differently so that even courious democrats will feel welcomed to come to your " leftist" organisation.

Something like "Hey liberals; sick of waffling, compromising, and selling out the working class? Go Red!"
