So Im new....
whats everyones toughts on Sudan/Darfur. While i have to applaud the rebels for standing up and fighting a fascist government, using the refugges as leverage is pure bullshit.
Also while the US pushes for Oil sanctions, it completly ignores an arms embargo.
Another example of the UN being a puppet for the powerful at he expense of the people?

You have to understand that the UN cannot afford to strictly discipline the US. Why? Because of all the nations in the world, the US gives the UN the most financial support.
And, if the UN really wants to stay relevant it will do as it is told by its main supporter. It's really bad though, its like the UN has lost a social conscience and is only money-driven.
About Darfur, I'm not too knowledgeable about the situation, but I know Canada's PM Paul Martin addressed the issue yesterday in his speech to the UN General Assembly. Rebels using innocent lives to prove a point is inexcusable. They aren't rebels...they're terrorists.

There is mounting evidence that much of the destrucion of property and loss of life in the Dharfur region has been done by groups supported by Sudan's army. While the gov't has been cleared of backing these groups that does not clear the army of possible involvement. Kofi Called yesterday for I think it was $350 million to stem the hummanitarian crises spiralling out of control. Martin offered $20 million, (I was hoping he'd say $50 million, but it's a start). The Security council is waiting for a team of experts to report back with recomendations on how best to act. The Group is in Dharfur right now. I would imagine that there will be 8-10 thousand U.N. peacekeepers ( from Nieghboring African countries) sent in to protect the regions citizens, and most of the refuggees will go back home in about a year, however most of their livestock was stolen and there crops burned so there will still be need for aid.
Most of the rebels will leave before the peacekeepers get there and blend back into there communities. As soon as the peacekeepers go home they'll start again.
If the rebels were upset about the government then they wouldn't be massacreing a religious minority, they would be attacking something related to the gov't or at least the religious majority that supports the gov't.
