I need to read a book with historical connotation, in the time period from post cival war reconstruction till the present of American history. I am open to any time period and since I am asking here, Che-lives, I am looking for something a bit more radical.

My one choice I thought about was Zinn’s, You can't be Neutral on a Moving Train

Zinn's "Peoples History of the United States" covers a lot of the time frame your looking for. It also goes into a fair bit of detail on the Socialist movement in the 20's and 30's, as well as good insight into the post Civil War labor struggles.

The Drifters by James Michener is a wonderful read, my favourite book actually. Takes place during the vietnam war when kids would flee to Europe to escape the draft.

Read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. It's easy to read, one of the best books ever written, and then you can write subversive Socialist propaganda in your report by just talking about the book.

its about the meat packing industry of new york, it takes place during the turn of the century, give or take acouple years. it was published in 1905 i think. it describes in horrific detail the conditions workers had, sanitation, and other aspects.

Nanni Balestrini - We want everything! (that should be the english title if iam correct)

I really, really advice that you order this, to your home or to your library.
I guess it could be hard to find, but really...its great in every sense.
Every leftist should really read this one.

Soccer in Sun and Shadow by Eduardo Galeano is pretty cool. It is about soccer but has a not so subtle marxist messege.

I take it you need a novel, then I would highly recommenend Gore Vidal's novels such as 1876, Hollywood : A Novel of America in the 1920s, The Golden Age, Empire. They, I think, would be perfect. Gore Vidal is a radical as well.

A great WWII novelist is Alan Furst. He quite accurately recreates the time between 1930 something and 1945. His books that I've read so far focus on NKVD agents, and really let you know how terrifying Stalin was, and what a joke (a rather bad one) he made socialism.
