I'm a high schooler,...in high school in San Diego, California. I'm one of the two hardcore Marxists in my whole school. There are a few Socialists, but the leftist group at the school is very small probably since the school is in a very rich neighborhood. I'm planning to start a sort of "Red Club" at school in response to two new "Democratic Club" and "Republican Club". Not expecting to make alot of members, but we have to make our voice heard, hopeing to get advice on this action from this forum later.

San Diego? I live near there. I go to a rich school too, everyone's Republican and we even have one novel resident Nazi. Aparently it's less acceptable to be communist than fascist...
Anyways, Good luck with your efforts.

Talk about Republicans, in La Jolla, its unbearable, they are everywhere, the liberals are little better, but lately I've fended off the barrage of the usaul stupid questions (human nature ect. blah blah), now they are wearing "Republican Party" t-shirts, so my little group my respond by wearing CPUSA t-shirts......we're outnumbered 20 to 1. I find most people just have that myth of what Communism and Socialism stuck in their heads, I'm planning to write for the school newspaper to argue that out.

Well, the Russians were used for years by the politicians to get what they wanted, much in the same way terrorism is being used today. So it's easy to understand why the majority of people would have such ideas.
By the way, as I am new and seeking knowledge about communism, what would be the best book to start off with?

hi man - welcome aboard
if ure in san diego u so have to go to the che cafe if u havent already http://checafe.ucsd.edu/
dont get too worried that you are surrounded by demitrons and republicrats - while it is so fuckin annoying they think war on poor nations is something that makes the world better and all the rest of it - the anti capitalist movement is growing and gaining momentum.
it was great to see the footage of the RNC protests. dont just limit things to socialist/communist vs capitalist arguements - ppl r very stubborn, use examples of capitalist failures and atrocities and changes people have made from movements eg ending apatheid, ending slavery (well lots of it), womans rights... we have come a long way and still have much to go.
good luck battling the babylon at school

I would start with Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto, Lenin's State and Revolution and Imperialism, the highest stage of Capitalism is also good., if they are a little hard to understand try to get some book that simplifies the writing and explains it. Its best to understand the political and economic system of Communism/Socialism verse Capitalism before you dive into the deep things like Historical Materialism, class conscience.

i found "The Communest Manifesto and other Revolutionary Writings" at B&N for $3.50, try that out.
i used to live in huntington beach, orange county, so i know what its like to be going to school with a bunch of rich elitest idiots!
at my highschool here in florida, most people dont have a clue what communism or capitolism is! ...i'd choose the poor idiots over the rich idiots ANY DAY!

Awesome, thanks. I've ordered the Communist manifesto(full version), The Communist Manifesto and Other Revolutionary Writings: Marx, Marat, Paine, Mao Tse-Tung, Gandhi and Others, the Autobiography of Malcolm X, Guerilla warfare by Che Guevara, and A biography of Che Guevara.
Ordered them on amazon, because if I went to the library I just know that my name would be popping up in a FBI watchlist pretty soon. Got to love the Patriot Act.

Librarians have started takings pecial measures recently, shredding paper records of book orders on a daily basis.
The moment you return your book, no one knows you ever even borrowed it.
At least that's what most libraries are doing.

I still agree with Dreaming, though. Public libraries are not exactly as private as they once were. Plus, I seem to have a tendency to lose books(only books which I check out from the library, if I buy it, I could drop it into the ocean and it'd come floating back to me).

It's true, they have a watch list of books that cause little sirens to go off if you check them out. Plus, thanks to the gloriously misnamed "Patriot Act", they can now pull your library records, student records, and medical records without a warrant.

I think that Dreamer is starting with the right stuff to get into Communism. I just got into it in the begining of this year so we can relate a little bit. I started reading a lot about Che Guevara and his complex Marxist character and he has been my hero ever since. My mother is Marxist and she inspired me to do the same. Nice going Dreamer! :che:

yea at my school its considered normal to see an iron cross or swastica, but anti-american to see a hammer and a sickle, i have this shirt that i got from a skate shop, that has a hammer and a sickle, and says progress under it in russian, and people freak.
I would consider libertarians worse than democrats or republicans, they are like jehovas witnesses, they know their shit by heart and its all in there hard, hard to argue with them. I live about an hour and half from san diego, and at my school i am the only communist, but you have the occasional "i went to the mall and saw a che shirt and bought it cuz it was cool person" but i dont give them shit, i just walk by with my che book looking in there direction.
