Bad Girls Spank the Bank
(Sparks Street & Metcalfe - Ottawa Canada). As its first public action, Sluts Against Butts is offering to reward the Big Banks for their friendship and collaboration with Big Tobacco.
"We?re a brand spanking new organization," explained Roxy Sabre, "and what better way to kick things off than to spank our way to social justice."
Sluts Against Butts is a group of women bent on making the tobacco industry responsible for the death, disease, and addiction it causes - especially that which it causes by cashing in on girls? rebellion. Established in 2002, the group stirs up trouble for big tobacco by staging anti-corporate actions and providing others with the tools they need to stage their own.
"We not only out to embarrass the banks with a public spanking," said Lala Lola. "We want them to change their ways."
The group cites many ways that Big Tobacco and Big Banks work together to keep the money flowing from the pockets of smokers to the coffers of investors, and notes that:
* Not one of Canada?s big banks has taken a stand against corporate tobacco, or expressed public concern about tobacco companies.
* Not one of them has a policy against investing in big tobacco.
* Not one of them has returned the money they made from tobacco investments to the victims of big tobacco.
* Not one of the mutual funds directly managed by the banks has an investment policy of rejecting tobacco (although two of them - Scotia Bank and the National Bank - give their clients option of buying ethical funds managed by others).
Are spankings an effective way to deal with the banks? Tigra Rumba thinks so: "The big banks know they have it coming. And we?re just the women to give it to them."
Each of Canada's six chartered banks was given a certificate redeemable for an official SlutsAgainstButts Spanking. Redemption of the banks themselves, noted the sluts, would take more than a few spankings.
