Well now it seems like the interim Iraqi government is permanantly banning al-Jazeera from having any kind of news coverage in Iraq.

Liberated Iraq sends in security to silence al-Jazeera

Iraqi security officers stormed al-Jazeera's Baghdad offices and sealed the newsroom with red wax on the weekend after the interim government banned the Arabic television station from broadcasting in the country.

The raid followed a decision by Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi to close the station temporarily last month because of its apparent failure to support the US occupation. Officials said al-Jazeera had now been shut indefinitely because it had ignored the original ban.

Several armed police officers were posted outside and in the lobby of Baghdad's Swan Lake Hotel, where al-Jazeera has its offices.

"We have been told not to let anyone in; we are just following orders," Captain Abu Jibal told journalists. "If you take any photos, we'll arrest you," he said.

Robert Menard of Reporters Without Borders said the ban contradicted "Iraqi officials' statements on democracy."

Other media groups, including the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, criticized the earlier ban.

Al-Jazeera said the decision was "reminiscent of the way certain other regimes have behaved."

Last month Iraqi police seized around 60 journalists from a hotel in Najaf at gunpoint. Asked later whether he condemned the incident, Allawi refused to answer.

An al-Jazeera spokesman, Jihad Ballout, said his station had abided by the temporary ban and had used agency footage from Iraq, like other media groups.

The future of al-Jazeera's 100 reporters and other workers in Iraq was unclear, he said.

"We have never compromised our editorial values. We believe that what happens in Iraq is very important for the whole Arab world and needs to be covered comprehensively, objectively and in a balanced way," he said.

shows hor 'free' the 'new' iraq is. first thing the new leaders do is try shut down un-biased media. shutting down al sadr's paper was what sparked his resistance to the occupation - it'll be intresting to see what effect this has.

How long do you rekon it will be before Iraq turns into an authoritarion dictatorship again? My bet is 5 years.
This move is absolutly disgusting. I'm not sure of the exact official reasons why al-Jazeera was banned in the first place, but it was something to do with biased reporting, was it not? So what the Iraqi regime has done is to ban opposition propaganda, yet they still carry on churning out their own. One party state, here we come!

Is anyone honestly surprised by this? After conquering Afghanistan, several newspapers were shut down after promises of free speech. And do I need to remind anyone of Sherman Austin. The thing that we have to realize is that what the U.S. calls democracy is what the rest of the world calls facism.

One more thing, the war was never about democracy, it is about money. This has been the case for every war ever waged by the united states government. Lets start from the beginning.
Revolutionary War: Fought so America would not have to give away resources to Great Britain, they could sell if free.
War of 1812: Fought to maintain financial independence from Great Britain
Mexo-American War: Texas had land for livestock, California had gold. Need I say more?
Civil War: The north would have to import ( and therefore pay for) products produced in the South.
Spanish-American War: American Imperialist holding were threatened in the Carribean.
WWI: Threatened American trade in Europe
WWII: Threatened American trade in Europe, also mobilized the economy, bringing U.S. out of depression.
Korean War: Threatened U.S. Imperialist holdings in Asia.
Viet Nam: Threatened U.S. aliies (the French) imperialist holdings in Asia.
Gulf War: Iraq threatened U.S. contolled oil fields in Kuwait.
"War on Terror" Afghanistan: Threatened U.S. imperialist holdings in Middle East, and also major American oil suppliers.
Operation Iraqi Freedom: The U.S. oil reserves running low due to tensions caused by War on Terror, if you take over Iraq, get oil for free.

Interesting note: Before U.S. went into Iraq, Bush sign $3 billion worth in private contract using taxpayer money to rebuild and/or take over Iraqi oil fields.
