as a little boy i was interested in socialism and communism, but growing up in a middle-class family, rightwing leaning family with a capitalist mother, a capitalist brother and a socialist father. We all had different views on politics and belief, my mom a christian, my brother a catholic, my dad a buhdist. When i was 8, i would talk to my mother (suprisingly she accepted my leftist thoughts and my father was the strict one about my beliefs) about communism. I told her of my beliefs on communism and capitalism, then she compared it to Cuba. She told me if i was a true communist, i would give up my TV, bed, luxuries, and eat bread and milk once a day. What do you think would've been a good response?

I would tell my capitalist mother:
"If you were a true capitalist you would have sold me."

No, this is what is called middle class sacrifice. It is pointless it doesnt help anyone. In today's socialist countries that are more advandced like North korea and Cuba they have access to TV, bed's, luxuries. It is obvious that they are not big consumerist soceities so they have less of the Luxuries.
In a communist society the goal is not to destroy all luxuries and be forced to eat milk and bread once a day. I dont know where your mother is coming from in saying you should change your lifestyle as if it would make it you more communist.
It's funny becuase your mum should be saying this to your Dad since he is a buddhist and these things are some of the goals of buddhism.

A good response might have been said as..,
"Well, these are created mentalities and non-felt-needs by consumerism. Cubans have their Tvs and they don't only have bread and milk once a day, and comparatively, they use their natural talents (dance, music, sports, etc) to much better extents than say an average person in any capitalist countries (Imagining a boy sitting all day playing PS2 and do no sports.)"
p.s. btw, my mom is a selfish capitalist sheep in the herd, who is desperately entrenched in the "system", and I feel bad about it. We can't talk properly.

"Poverty is not communism!"
However, Communists should be spartan in spirit.

Check out "The Greening of Cuba". I think that will change people's minds on whether or not communism is so bad.
