From time to time, people on this board will talk about "joining the army" as a "revolutionary tactic" -- a way of "winning over" professional mercenaries "to the revolution". When I saw this post, I thought it was a very accurate "self-portrait" of what you turn into if you follow that road.

First of all, note that inspite of a claimed degree from SUNY (State University of New York), this post is barely literate. This "person" has lost, if he ever had, almost all contact with the English language.

Second, note that the tone of his post approaches incoherent rage...you can almost visualize him typing it as fast as his clumsy fingers could manage, striking the keys so hard that some of them could have broken in the process.

Third, it seems to me that a good deal of his rage is directed against the young as such...to be young is, all by itself, a kind of "crime". The young are "living on Mommy's money", are "drug addicts", are "teen-gang members", are "eco-terrorist trash", are "hippie wackos" for whom "activism is a hobby", and so on.

Fourthly, note that all he has to identify with is America's "imperial grandeur" -- he says bluntly, "...America does what it wants, when it wants, and there is not a fucking thing that any other nation can do about it, get it?" As a mercenary, his real life is totally one of following orders...but "in his head" he is "The All-Powerful Empire".

It is a sad document, no question about it. Humans debased into mindless "killing machines" do not a pretty picture make.

Yet this is what you become when you choose to be a mercenary in service to the empire...as a rational human, you've committed a kind of suicide long before the bullet from a resistance fighter shatters your skull.

It's up to you if you wish to pity them...but if you do, remember that as civilized humans they died long before the roadside bomb exploded.

Don't ever let their fate be yours.

I didn't re-post the mercenary's rants because I thought they were a legitimate reflection of your views or the views of other intelligent pro-capitalists.

I wanted you guys to see what your ideas turn people into in the real world.

I'm sure the mercenary has never heard of neo-classical economics and probably thinks Ayn Rand was a map-maker and Milton Friedman was a 1950s comedian.

But consider what he has learned "from" the neo-conservatives: a fascist-like emotional identification with the military and the country; a raging and utterly irrational hatred of the young; a positive lust for torture and murder.

You know it's a common charge that we communists "preach class hatred"...and it's true. We do.

Well, yes, it works in the short-term. But sooner or later, it comes time to 'test' whose stronger again, which means war, which, as you probably know, is not peace. So, essentially, it means a policy of, if not continual war, then at least cyclical war.

I mean, if that is true, why has America been at war for most of its history? They always did have firepower superior to that of anyone around them.

Soldiers are discouraged from discussing anything relative to the real world while on duty, or from speaking at all. So if you want to influence professional soldiers it has to be done while they are off duty. You don't need to join the army to hang out with soldiers. I have a few friends in the Can. army they invite me to their regular keg parties, and Canadian bases all have a Jr. Ranks Club (bar), at which civilians are welcome, all you need is a drivers license to show ID.

I've had many enlightening conversations with soldiers most needed a reminder that they are a large well armed union, and if they came from money they would probably be officers. British and Canadian soldiers hate fighting with the Americans not only do they generally disagree with the US foriegn policy, but the US is well armed and poorly trained which results in them frequently killing their allies by mistake.

Ummm. For anyone who calls themselves a Marxist "peace through superior firepower" is not necessarily that contradictory. If violence is a product of certain social structures then violence can be stopped by destroying these social structures. Since that will inevitably involve revolutionary violence it would appear that, from a purely Marxist standpoint, we can gain peace through "superior firepower".

Also most soldiers aren't anywhere near as that, at least not here in the UK.
