Have you not seen his hair?

Seriously, he was captured in a picture that kind of embodies the revolutionary visionary kind of thing, looked good on t-shirts and the rest as they say is history.

He has always been popular among lefties but by last 2 years I assume you mean his new found mass appeal.

I believe he's always been popular with leftists and revolutionaries and not just from his picture. During the early 60's he was very popular with the American and European Left. His believes, actions, and life really hit home with alot of people who share similar philosophies. That makes him a role model of some sorts.

But in the past 2 years he has experienced almost a second comming in popularity due to the blatent commercialism of that famous picture taken. Consumers see that image and think it looks cool so they buy it. This is completely different than the actual revolutionaries who look at him in a different light. They share the beliefs that Che was famous for, not the look he is famous for.

partly to do with his adventurous spirit and willingness to fight - indeed lose his life for a cause he was totally dedicated to, he was the underdog and that didnt stop him for a moment. also that he died in the thick of it in his prime - others could go on and retire and live off their legend and status - he wouldn't rest.

prehaps because of his youth as well - mao, len, engels, stalin (bastard), fidel, marx - they are all thought of in their later years - che died before he got to them. he appealed/appeals to the youth because he is not white and fights for justice.

there are many reasons - maybe also because there dont seem to be a lot of heroes around today.

Premature death... for the "average citizen".

Although he lived longer then most revolutionaries would of, I'd imagine, whom had participated in one successful revolution and one (two) unsuccessful one.

Death was on Che's cards... sooner or later.

For a long time, Che has been popular but I think only to lefties. He has proven to us that it is not enough for a revolutionary to be young, but to be a revolutionary, one has to die young. And I guess that is why he is so popular. He is the epitome of a true revolutionary. Too bad all those T-shirts made him seem overrated.
