AFL-CIO=American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations

Last time I checked, the AFL-CIO leadership were reactionaries who helped the U.S government/CIA overthrow the Allende government in Chile in 1973 and are currently working with them to undermine the government of Chavez in Venezuela.

As Daniel De Leon called them, they are "the labor lieutenants of the Capitalist Class." While they offer better protection to workers than no union at all, they are also very beaurocratic. The union leaders have much higher wages than the workers they are supposed to represent so, instead of really fighting for the workers, they often do what is in their own best interest (i.e. making a quick deal with the bosses).
